UK: EUROPEAN SINGLE CURRENCY PREVIEW
English/Nat
Britain's prime minister John Major faces a showdown with rebel backbenchers this week when parliament debates the merits of a European single currency.
The debate, ahead of the European summit in Dublin at the end of the week, could help trigger the collapse of Major's ailing government.
At the heart of the issue is whether the people of Britain really want to be part of Europe.
APTV visited the medieval village of Chilham, near the port of Dover, to test local opinion:
Winter in Kent, the famed 'Garden of England'. This is the village of Chilham, its ancient square dominated by the local castle. Peeping out from behind the ramparts of the 15th century church, life goes on much as it did in Shakespeare's day.
But within these medieval lanes, a quiet revolution is brewing. The people of Chilham are up in arms at the notion that the pound sterling should be abolished - and replaced by a single European currency.
British prime minister John Major has refused to rule out such a prospect - a stance that could severely damage the local standing of his ruling Conservative party.
Residents of Chilham - a traditionally Conservative area - say the idea is an affront to their Englishness:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We're British, we want to stay British. We do not want to be Europeans or anything like that.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are an island race, let's stay an island race and keep our own identity.

Conservative support has fallen like leaves in autumn as a result of the party's continued civil war over Europe.
Robert Balicki is a local fruit farmer - and a Conservative member of Kent county council. He sums up what he sees as the difference between the British - and the rest of the Europe:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
When we pass laws, we tend to obey them. We perceive in Europe that many laws that are passed are put on the statute book and then promptly ignored if it doesn't suit people in Europe. So we don't have a European outlook really, in terms of legislation, and therefore we feel that we can run our own ship really.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Balicki, Conservative councillor
Just a few miles from Chilham are the white cliffs of Dover, an enduring symbol of Britain's resistance against Germany in the second world war. It's a popular view here that Europe begins at Calais across the English Channel.
It's a view that will be echoed in parliament this week when Major's 'wait and see' policy on the single currency comes under fire. Anti-Europe Conservative rebels will unite with the pro-Europe opposition to produce a critical test of the government's authority:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It is a very serious crisis within the Tory Party, but the Party has been divided on Europe for many years now. The danger for Mr. Major is that it has become an ideological Party obsessed with issues like sovereignty when the old traditional Tory Party used to be much more concerned simply with a pragmatic view of how to gain power and how to keep it.
SUPER CAPTION: Robin Oakley, BBC Political Editor
And so the scene is set for this week's debate, starting Wednesday. It promises to be a pivotal moment in British political history, perhaps the beginning of the end for John Major's government. The people of Chilham have spoken. This week may be Major's last chance to heed their words.

Chilham Mill Level Crossing
A pair of Class 395s in Southeastern livery pass before a pair of Class 375s in old Southeastern livery and two Class 73s in Great British Rail freight livery working a Snow & Ice Treatment train (not in snow or ice) cross on a second closure. One of the 73s has the nameplate 'O.V.S. Bulleid C.B.E.'. This is one of two crossings in the area of Chilham, this one being named Chilham Mill because of the history here. This, and the other crossing, have lights that flash oppositely to the one next to it. The lights are surprisingly still halogens and are extremely dirty. This road leads to the fisheries in Chilham and has had a housing estate built on one end of it, next to the A28 (The road that passes through my village). Chilham is a very old village and has very narrow streets. No wonder it had the A252 and A28 bypass it a long time ago. Bloody council.

Chilham Castle And Village
My Favorite Place
I’d been researching my family tree. The trail led to Chilham in Kent. UK. My Grandfather, his Wife and two children, moved from Brenchly to Chilham, where he opened a Bakery in the Village in the late 1920s. I was familiar with Chilham and knew it to be very picturesque. A nice place to visit.
The 25th September was a beautiful day so I took the opportunity to go down to Chilham to find the Bakery. I had the Camcorder set up in the windscreen and the Radio tuned to ‘Radio Kent.’ It was quite a coincidence that they were doing a thing about “Your Favorite Place.” Phone in. So the soundtrack to the Video was recorded from ‘Radio Kent’ as I was driving through Chilham.
