The Chiltern Brewery - Bodgers Barley Wine 8.5%
The Chiltern Brewery - Bodgers Barley Wine 8.5%
Brewed by Chiltern
Style: Barley Wine
Aylesbury, England
Serve in Snifter
COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Generally only available bottle conditioned. Has appeared occasionally on cask. Previously brewed at 8.0%.
Originally brewed to celebrate the brewery’s 10th anniversary in 1990. The strength at 1080 og or 8% abv records our foundation in 1980. The style of the beer is very unusual - perhaps unique in being like a very sturdy India Pale Ale , but with ‘hop wine’ overtones.
The polished chestnut colour is generated solely by the strength as the beer’s foundation is based on premium quality pale ale malt. This matched by a generous measure of choice, full leaf-hops to counterbalance in the copper.
The result has been most satisfactory. The beer has attracted a loyal following, and has been selected by the head office of CAMRA to be presented to MEP’s in Brussels.
Middleton Junction Station 1960s
2 clips highlighting the beauty of Middleton jct, Middleton station and Chadderton siding during the 1960s. All gone!!!
Bit of the info is incorrect. the station was first called Middleton, then Oldham jct and finally Middleton jct & it closed in 1966 not 1963.
Aylesbury News, Tring Brewery Picks Up Bronze Medal at the Great British Beer Festival.
A beer brewed in Tring is one of the top three in the UK today.
Death or Glory, which is made at Tring Brewery, won the Bronze Medal at the Great British Beer Festival.
It's run by the Campaign for Real Ale.
Bingham's Vanilla Stout, brewed in Berkshire, was named the best beer of 2016 at the Champion Beer of Britain Awards Dinner held on Tuesday evening (9 August) at the Hilton Hotel, Olympia, London.
The award comes after almost a year of local tasting panels and regional heats seeing the best beers across the UK invited to compete at the Great British Beer Festival.
Final judging for the competition was held at the huge beer festival which opened its doors to the public on August 9 and over the next week will see more than 50,000 people visiting Olympia in London to sample their choice of more than 900 beers, cider and perries – including the chance to try the nation's best beer.
Bingham's Vanilla Stout is a 5 per cent Dark Stout infused with vanilla and dark malts to create a smooth and dark beer.
The Kent based Old Dairy brewery's Snow Top claimed the silver award in the Champion Beer of Britain competition. The 6 per cent ABV Old Ale has already taken a gold award at CAMRA's National Winter Ale's Festival and is described by the brewery as the perfect winter warmer with fruitcake and marmalade flavours.
Placing third in the competition was Tring brewery's Death or Glory, a 7.2 per cent Barley Wine, brewed by appointment to the Queen's Royal Lancers. The beer is described by the Hertfordshire brewery as being a rich and sweet barley wine with a complex nature.
CAMRA national director responsible for the Champion Beer of Britain Competition Nik Antona said:
This year all the judges commented on how high quality all the beers were in the final stages of the competition and what a wide range of styles and beers they had to try and choose between.
Bingham's Vanilla Stout is packed full of comforting flavours and I'm sure it will be a popular Champion Beer Choice. It's great to see a speciality beer win the award for the first time in the history of the competition and our congratulations go to the brewery.
And there's been some love for the Tring brew on Twitter as well:
I swear @TringBrewery don't brew a bad beer. This strong Death or Glory really packs a punch at 7.2% #GBBF pic.twitter.com/gnbiSToWYC

Thame Food Festival 2014
The streets of Thame were teeming with visitors on Saturday 27th September when the town hosted its seventh annual food festival. More than 25,000 foodies traveled from far and wide to enjoy one of Oxfordshire’s finest food sensations, enjoying delicious local produce, inspiring cookery demos and a great day out.
More than 180 stalls lined the town centre from end to end serving up tasty local food and drink, bounty that included cured meats, cheeses, pies, preserves, ales and ciders. Visitors were able to try and buy, taking home fantastic, hand-made food and drink whilst supporting local producers into the bargain.
Celebrity chefs numbering Raymond Blanc OBE, Adam Simmonds, Sophie Grigson and winners of BBC Two’s the Great British Bake Off Edd Kimber and John Whaite thrilled visitors on the demo stage sponsored by AGA, whilst Tom Kerridge and many others made an appearance on the interview stage with festival patron, TV chef and writer Lotte Duncan and BBC Radio 2’s Ken Bruce putting them through their paces. Visitors got the latest cookery books signed by the authors at the pop-up book shop run by Thame’s independent book shop, The Book House.
Food fans tried their hands at sausage-making, bread shaping, wine tasting and fresh pasta making at exciting work shops and afterwards nursed a pint of local real ale at one of the friendly watering-holes in town including The James Figg pop-up pub. There was also a competition to win a day as a brewer with the Vale Brewery and the Aylesbury Brewhouse Co.
To make way for the festival the entire town centre was closed off for the day and visitors rode to and from Thame on one of four, traditional London Routemaster double decker buses, returning laden with purchases and smiles on their faces after a tasty and enjoyable day out.
“What an amazing day – Thame Food Festival just gets bigger and better every year!” says festival patron Lotte Duncan. “Record crowds, wonderful weather and staggering support from everyone who took part meant a fantastic day for Thame and for the fantastic local and artisan produce the event showcases.
“We have so many great producers on our doorstep, who are passionate about what they do, and we were thrilled to see so many of them out in force at the festival. We are also truly blessed with the support we have from celebrity chefs who give their time for free to bring a day celebrating local food into the market town of Thame.
“We couldn’t do it without them, nor without the support of our generous sponsors Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, AGA, Rectory Homes, Wellers, South Oxfordshire District Council, The Thatch and Belazu, and we’d like to say a big thank you to all of them,” she says.
As well as fantastic feedback from visitors from the day, stall holders reported brisk trading with many down to their last bottle, loaf or slice of cake by the end of the festival.
Finally, there was even more reason to celebrate on one stall, Long Crendon’s Bucksum, when proprietor David Newman proposed to his partner Tracy Russell and she said yes. Fittingly, the couple met at The Thame Food Festival four years ago, with David choosing this year’s festival as the perfect time to pop the question. David said, “It had to be today as it was a very special occasion, we’re food lovers and we love it here in Thame.”

Aylesbury News, Local Activities To Celebrate Older People in Aylesbury Vale.
Older people can learn new skills and get the most out of life, despite their age or mental health.
That's according to Aylesbury Vale District Council who have compiled a list of activities for older people ahead of International Older People's Day on Saturday.
Taking part is one Charity from Wendover, who are offering a chance for people to try out one of their Memory Pathway sessions, primarily aimed at people with Alzheimer's.
It's a type of horticulture therapy, described by Aylesbury Vale District Council as 'an increasingly popular way of using gardening to improve health and wellbeing, get more active and increase people's confidence whatever their age.'
The session is part of a wider range of activities compiled by AVDC, known as the 'Holiday at Home' programme.
From the council:
The Holiday at Home programme includes something for everyone, whatever their interests. Other activities include historic walks, gentle exercise, brewery and museum visits, computer skills training, crafts and volunteering opportunities. All the activities have been organised and provided by local people and organisations that offer year-round activities, so those who have enjoyed the taster sessions can continue with those activities.
Cllr Angela Macpherson, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Communities and Civic Amenities, added:
We applaud the contribution that so many older people make in the local community. Older People's Day is a chance for us all to recognise and appreciate this. There are so many different activities in the programme, created and provided by local people and organisations, that I'd urge all older people to try out something new.
You can find the full range of activities on the council's website.
