TRT World Exclusive - The Flaming Rocks of Yanartas or Chimera
TRT World's team of Sourav Roy, Sulaiman Sibai and Erva Kisa travel to the heart of the Taurus mountains in Cirali, Antalya to find out why the flaming rocks of Yanartas or Chimera, have been burning for thousands of years.
And here's what they found-
The Taurus Mountain range in Antalya, Turkey.
One of the most ancient in the world.
And for the last 80 million years, it’s been standing as a stunning formation of limestone and other sedimentary rocks.
Covered with lush coniferous and deciduous trees, these mountains are host to an ancient wonder - the flaming rocks of Yanartas.
Legend has it that a fire-breathing monster was killed here by a Greek god and its breath lives on beneath the rocks.
But Yanartas is the world's largest deposit of non-volcanic and non-animal origin methane gas.
Due to a rare phenomenon, carbon and hydrogen combine at low temperature and high pressure beneath some rocks and mountains producing highly combustible methane.
But scientists still don't know why deposits such as Yanartas are so rare on the surface of Earth.
As the rocks of Yanartas continue to burn, geologists are continuing their search for more deposits like these.

merhaba@iskenderfilm.com Kemer'den yaklaşık 35 km. mesafede Çıralı ve Olimpos'un tepelerinde 230 metre yükseklikte yer alan, Chimera'nın sonsuz alevleri (eternal flames) olarak anılan ve doğal bir ateş kaynağına sahip olan Yanartaş'ın drone çekimlerini yaptık.

Yanartas (Chimaera), known as the place of flames, is a fascinating natural rocky formation located along Cirali village, on Mount Chimaera slopes, close to Olympos Valley, about 35 km. from Kemer. Yanartas is called as eternal fire that the flames burn right on the rocks without any apparent fuel or heat source. The region is situated on a track famous for hiking lovers on the Lycian Way.

Yanartaş fires, Mount Chimaera, Olympos Valley, Lycia, Turkey, Asia
The fires are grouped over an area of 5000 m2 and are fueled by gas emissions which have been burning for at least 2500 years. These emissions seem to change seasonally: vents and flames are more vigorous in winter months. This is a common characteristic of such seeps, where gas flux is typically modulated by gas pressure build-up induced by groundwater recharge and changes in atmospheric pressure. Abiotic methane ordinarily only forms at temperatures much higher than those that occur in the rocks at Yanartaş. However ruthenium, is present in the igneous rocks under the flames, and is believed to act as a catalyst, permitting the formation of methane at the lower temperatures (i.e., below 100 °C) that occur at Yanartaş. These vents represent the biggest emission of abiogenic methane discovered on land so far. The emissions do not have a volcanic origin, since methane is not related to mantle or magma degassing. The vents emit mainly methane (87%). The rest is made of hydrogen (7.5-11%), nitrogen (2-4.9 %), light alkanes (0.57%), carbon dioxide (0.01-0.07 %) and helium (80 ppmv). These proportions and the isotopic composition indicates a mix from 2 origins, in equal part: an organic thermogenic gas, related to type III kerogen occurring in Palaeozoic and Mesozoic organic-rich sedimentary rocks, an abiogenic gas produced by low-temperature serpentinization in the Tekirova ophiolitic unit.
Eternal Fire of Chimera, Turkey
We took this video during our travel to famous Chimera Mountain in Turkey.
About 80 km south-west of Antalya, near the town of Çıralı in south-western Turkey, there's an eternal flame. It comes from the Earth and burns already for thousands of years.
