Chimczuk Museum Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Windsor’s latest downtown attraction is now open!
The 11,000-square-foot Chimczuk Museum was officially opened by Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and members of City Council, along with a host of dignitaries and well-wishers at a special ribbon cutting ceremony.
“Our Chimczuk Museum is a tremendous attraction with so much rich history to share,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “And now, between our new museum; the Art Gallery of Windsor; the François Baby House; the Capitol Theatre, home of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra; and our beautiful aquatics complex, we have a host of top quality family attractions for residents and visitors alike—all within our downtown core.”
The Chimczuk Museum occupies the main floor of 401 Riverside Drive West, while the Art Gallery of Windsor occupies floors two and three.
Funding sources for the $5.7 million project included nearly $2 million from the Government of Canada’s Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, over $3.3 million from the bequest of Joseph Chimczuk, and the remainder from the City of Windsor’s Capital Budgets. The Provincial Government also contributes to operations through the Community Museum Operating Grant.
As part of the project, Windsor’s Community Museum has rebranded to reflect its expanded scope. “Museum Windsor” encompasses the François Baby House, the Chimczuk Museum and the Interpretive Centre at the Duff-Baby House in Sandwich.

Fighting in Flanders Exhibit Launched
On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, Mayor Drew Dilkens and His Excellency Raoul Delcorde, Ambassador of Belgium to Canada launched Fighting In Flanders: Gas. Mud. Memory, a travelling exhibit that will be on display at the Chimczuk Museum from May 17 to 29, 2016, as part of Museum Month in Ontario.
Canada played a pivotal role in Belgium during the First World War, and this story deserves to be shared with Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Museum Windsor’s Chimczuk Museum is pleased to present the two-dimensional version of the travelling exhibition from the Canadian War Museum in Windsor, Ontario. The exhibition is supported by National Presenting Sponsor VISITFLANDERS, and is part of a series of projects commemorating the Centenary of the First World War at the War Museum. This exhibition was developed by the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, in partnership with the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, Belgium, and with the generous support of the E.W. Bickle Foundation.
“From the first use of deadly chlorine gas in the Second Battle of Ypres to the treacherous mud of Passchendaele, Canadian soldiers faced horrific new weapons and unimaginable conditions on the battlefield,” says Mark O’Neill, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum. “This exhibition showcases the Canadian experiences in Belgium and the impact these had on Canadian lives.”
The launch event on May 18 kicked off a three-day visit from the Ambassador, during which he will join Mayor Dilkens on a tour of facilities, heritage sites and Windsor’s cultural assets. In honour of the exhibit’s launch and International Museum Day, the Chimczuk Museum offered free admission on Wednesday, May 18, 2016.
Mayor and veteransThe Canadian War Museum gratefully acknowledges the support of its Official Partners of the Centenary of the First World War: John and Pattie Cleghorn and Family; H.Col (Ret’d) John C. Celebrating 2017 - Windsor's 125th birthday & Ontario and Canada's 150th Anniversary
2017 is a year to celebrate in our community, and all across the nation. This year marks the City of Windsor’s milestone 125th birthday, alongside commemorations for the 150th anniversary of Ontario and Canada.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens was pleased to launch Celebrating2017 – a year-long initiative designed to provide many opportunities to bring together federal, provincial and municipal government; businesses; organizations; community groups; residents and visitors to celebrate these important milestones for our city, province and country.
A website – celebrating2017.ca – has been launched to gather, highlight and showcase information on the Signature Events, Community Events, Legacy Projects and National Initiatives that have all been designed to make our city, province and country the place to be in 2017.
Windsor has also received generous funding from the Government of Ontario, in the amount of $55,000 through the Ontario 150 Fund’s Community Celebration Program, to host a special Ontario 150-themed edition of the city’s popular Open Streets event in September 2017.
“The City of Windsor’s Open Streets event is just one example of the many vibrant and inclusive initiatives we are proud to support in the region to commemorate this historic anniversary,” said the Honourable Eleanor McMahon, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “I invite all Ontarians across our incredible province to join the festivities in their communities to celebrate our shared values and the people and places that uniquely define Ontario.”
Additional Signature Events set to take place in 2017 include:
• Unveiling and Raising of The Great Canadian Flag
• MasterCard Memorial Cup (99th Edition)
• Canada Day 150 Parade and Citizenship Ceremony
• 75th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid
• “A Group of Seven” Poet Laureate and Friends Project
• “Windsor in 1867 and 1967 – a Sesquicentennial Exhibit” at the Chimczuk Museum
• Opening of the City of Windsor’s Centennial “W” Time Capsule (1992)
Through a partnership with snapd, the new website – celebrating2017.ca – gives community groups the ability to submit information on any events, activities, projects and initiatives being organized throughout the year to help celebrate Windsor’s 125th birthday, or the 150th anniversary of Ontario and Canada.
The City of Windsor’s Celebrating2017 Initiative is funded [in part] by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Windsor.
Mayor's Minute Chimczuk Museum
I recently visited the Chimczuk Museum where I met with the museum coordinator Craig Cappachione. Craig took me behind the scenes for a tour of the storage rooms, including some of the interesting pieces that aren’t always on display. Did you know there was a series of murders in Windsor back in the 1940s committed by a man known as the Windsor Slasher? I got to see his original confession letter and learn more about a story that captivated our city. Check out this video and stay tuned for more interesting pieces from our vast museum collection. If there’s anyone or anything you’d like to learn more about, email mayoro@citywindsor.ca.

History Unveiled Windsor Time Capsule Opened
A W-shaped time capsule celebrating Windsor’s 100th birthday 25 years ago was opened at the Chimczuk Museum by Mayor Drew Dilkens and the Co-ordinator of the 1992 Centennial Celebration, Gisele Seguin. Inside the capsule were more than 100 pieces of memorabilia including the centennial flag, and a letter from the Mayor in 1992, Michael Hurst. Mayor Drew Dilkens says at the end of this year’s 125th birthday celebration, items will be placed in the capsule, including a letter from him to the future Mayor. It will be stored to be opened again in 25 years for the City’s 150th birthday.
