The distance between Shanghai and Suzhou is about 100km (62mi). The 30 minutes’ high-speed train makes it possible to have a day tour from one city to the other. The normal trains are an economy alternative which takes 1-2 hours and costs CNY15. A Long-distance bus ride priced at CNY40-50 and a taxi costing CNY400-500 both take about 1.5 hours. Shanghai Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Airport have shuttle buses to Suzhou. Many south China water towns are within 1.5 hours’ journey by bus from Shanghai.

In 1997 Suzhou's classic garden was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During the Ming Dynasty, the city flourished as a place of refinement, drawing an influx of the well to do. These individuals shaped the city of today by building these elegant gardens.
Developed as a synthesis of two Taoist concepts, the gardens hope to provide scenery and serenity:
The belief was that isolated meditation on nature would led one to enlightenment.
The Garden of the Master of Fishing Nets includes a lake, connecting corridors, pavilions, delicate latticework, and above all, points that frame a view, as if looking at a perfectly balanced photograph.
Your journey to Suzhou includes a tour the Silk Spinning Mill, where you learn how silk is created from the mulberry-munching silkworms. The silk produced here creates some of the finest thread used in all manner of items from fine art, clothing, and even the famous silk comforters.
Your journey continues with a visit to Tongli, a remarkably beautiful water town.
When you look at Tongli you might get a good idea of what Suzhou might have been like in the past.
Reminiscent of scenes from traditional Chinese paintings, it is complete with canals, stone bridges, and cobbled lanes. Your journey will take you on an exciting ride on a gondola. Where you will experience the charm of Tongli's waterways.

Happy World Toilet Day everyone! Earlier in the year I visited Suzhou, China's 16th most populated city. I spent some time wandering around its charming alleyways and chanced upon some very interesting latrines which weren't exactly the pinnacle of cleanliness.
Hopefully this video helps highlight in a small way just how different sanitary conditions can be in developing countries compared to the relative luxury faced in the western world. There's also a little shoutout to the World Toilet Organization at the end of the video who do a wonderful job at spreading the word on the global sanitation crisis. Highlights of Chinese Premier Li’s second day activities in Suzhou during China-CEE summit
On Wednesday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang held separate meetings with Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in East China’s city of Suzhou.
Li also invited leaders from Central and Eastern European (CEE) nations to take a ride on a China-made bullet train from Suzhou to Shanghai.
The leaders from 16 CEE countries were in Suzhou for the annual China-CEE summit meeting from Tuesday to Wednesday.
