Dandong: China's border city with North Korea

Dandong is a city on China’s border with North Korea. It has been the main route for China and North Korea to conduct trade and a barometer of Sino-North Korean relations. However, trade has been suspended due to the implementation of UN sanctions against Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes. Some of the businesses have gone underground.
Exploring the North Korea and China Friendship Bridge and Broken Bridge
Dandong, China (formerly Andong prior to 1945) is a city of 2 million inhabitants, situated on the Yalu River in China's southeast Liaoning province. Dandong is unique in that it is China's largest border city on the Sino-North Korean border, facing the DPRK border city of Sinuiju. China is responsible for around 40% of North Korea's export trade and a large portion of that trade passes through Dandong to Sinuiju and vice versa.
As many as 5 million Chinese tourists visit Dandong annually to catch a glimpse into life in the Hermit Kingdom, with upwards of 10,000 of those Chinese tourists travelling across the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge to visit Sinuiju.
Dandong is well off the beaten track when it comes to tourism. For those who travel here this is their only chance to have a glimpse into life of the Hermit Kingdom. For the high majority this is as close as they get to North Korea. Local Chinese companies have set up DPRK-themed boat tours, photo opportunities with Korean costumes, as well as North Korean goods such as stamps, cigarettes, alcohol, and clothing.
One of the biggest attractions of Dandong is the Broken Bridge. Located directly next to Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, the Broken Bridge was bombed by the U.S Military during the Korean War. Though it was repaired several times during the war, the DPRK decided not to repair the Broken Bridge for good at the end of the war, leaving it broken as a reminder of the destruction caused by the Americans during the war.
In this video, YPT North Korea Tour Manager Rowan Beard takes us along the waterfront and Dandong and for a tour of the Broken Bridge.

The Broken Bridge to North Korea (Dandong, China)
We traveled by train from Shenyang to Dandong, China. There we visited the Yalu River Broken Bridge. This was the site of the Americans infamous bombing raid in 1950. It was on this bridge we also met several friendly Chinese women.

The Yalu River Bridge was meant to foster trade and commerce between the two countries. But now it sits empty on the Chinese side, and the North Korean side ends abruptly in a field.

Train NORTH KOREA - CHINA Over the Friendship Bridge
The last views of Sinuiju, North Korea DPRK as the train was crossing the Friendship Bridge over the Yalu River towards Dandong, China. Clearing customs when leaving North Korea takes around 1 hour during which everybody waits in the train as the border guards inspect the passengers and their luggage. Most of us had a strange yay, back to freedom feeling when we crossed the Yalu River to China.

Crossing into North Korean Waters (Near Dandong, China)
It was an exciting day of sharing the Yalu River with North Koreans and Chinese swimmers. It was an amazing experience to see just how harmonious the relationship is between China and North Korea.

Opening of bridge linking N. Korea and China delayed indefinitely: Chinese state
Once rosy relations between North Korea and China have soured since Kim Jong-un assumed power in the North a few years ago.
And in a clear indication of the frayed ties, a multi-million dollar bridge... that was supposed to boost trade between the two countries... stands unused well after its scheduled opening date.
Park Ji-won tells us more.
This is the New Yalu River Bridge,... linking the northeastern Chinese city of Dandong to North Korea′s border city of Sinuiju.
The 3-kilometer-long structure was scheduled to open late last month,... but Chinese state media reports the opening has been pushed back indefinitely.
China footed the entire cost of the 350-million U.S. dollar project,... expecting the bridge to boost bilateral trade.
But after four years of work,... facilities and roads linking the bridge into the border cities remain unfinished.
Satellite images taken in September also show that North Korea hasn′t started building customs facilities.
Compared to pictures taken in October of last year,... we see no improvements at all.
In fact,... some buildings have been torn down during the time.
China and North Korea delayed laying roads linking the bridge to the cities because Beijing is not happy with Pyongyang′s nuclear programs and North Korea is unhappy with its current relationship with Beijing. I don′t think the bridge will open until the latter half of next year.
Watchers say the hold up completing the bridge,... which was supposed to handle some 80 percent of goods passing between both countries,... reflects the sour relations between the once strong allies.
PARK Ji-won, Arirang News.
