Themed “Our Chinatown. Our Mid-Autumn” (“我们的牛车水 , 我们的中秋节”), this year’s CHinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 recaptured the scenes and life experiences of Singapore’s Chinatown in the 50’s and 60’s. It aimed to encourage more people especially the youth to learn more about the Chinese traditions and heritage, and the lives of their forefathers where they first come to Singapore.
Vivifying centrepieces of early Chinese immigrants, street lanterns in the form of traditional accordion paper lanterns, nightly stage shows with exciting dragon dance performances on weekends, and the ever-popular lantern painting competition and mass lantern walk aim to allow Singaporeans and visitors from overseas to soak in the festive spirit like how they were celebrated in Chinatown.
A new night event for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival is the “Singapore Culture and Heritage Trail – Cantonese Chapter: Reliving the yesteryears once more”. The two-night of event promises to bring back traditional Cantonese cuisine and street food commonly found in the 1950s and 1960s. It featured more than 10 popular Cantonese delicacies with traditional dishes which are hard to come by, such as “Gold Coin Chicken” (金钱鸡) and “Prawn Toast” (虾吐司). A variety of street activities like fortune telling, face threading, Chinese calligraphy, Cantonese costume photo booth and opera will surely delight visitors. Besides immersing in the Cantonese culture, visitors have also been part of history by joining in for a record breaking feat of the most number of oriental masks to be worn at the same time.

This year’s Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival (牛车水庆中秋) invited both local and overseas visitors to immerse themselves in the most well-loved traditions of the annual festival. Themed “Celebrations of our Traditions 《传统新意庆中秋,同心共乐贺团圆》”, this year’s festival brought back nostalgic memories of a beloved tradition – lanterns, which served as the inspiration for this year’s Street Light-Up; while emphasizing family togetherness with a new event.
During the month-long celebration from 23 September to 19 October, over 1,000 beautiful, handcrafted lanterns has lighted up the streets of Chinatown each evening in a grand display of lights and colours, an annual highlight that draw local and overseas visitors to Chinatown each year.
The Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival, organised by the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee (KA-KS CCC), kicked off the Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony (开幕典礼与亮灯仪式). Graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, this year’s opening ceremony has taken the audience back to 1960s Singapore, and featured a lively showcase of gravity-defying acrobatic stunts and multicultural performances that represent Chinatown’s colourful ethnic mix.
Illuminating the streets of Chinatown from 23 September to 19 October are more than 1,000 lanterns along Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road and South Bridge Road, all handcrafted for the highly-anticipated Street Light-Up (牛车水庆中秋亮灯). This year’s lantern display was inspired by the traditional cellophane paper lanterns popular in Singapore in the 60s to 80s.
Adding to the Street Light-Up were the creative artworks of 500 children and students who took part in the annual Lantern Painting Competition (灯笼彩绘比赛) last Sunday. These were being displayed along Pagoda Street until 19 October 2017.
A new event this year was the Mid-Autumn Family Fest @ Chinatown (中秋“家”节 @ 牛车水) on 24 September 2017, where families and friends can take part in a morning of traditional activities associated with the festival. Held at the Kreta Ayer Community Club, there will be various hands-on activities, such as mooncake-making, tea appreciation, calligraphy writing and lantern painting.
Starting from 20 September, local and overseas visitors can look forward to finding a wide array of festive must-haves and treats from mooncakes and tea to preserved fruits and decorative ornaments at the annual Festive Street Bazaar (中秋街头市集).
For the arts-inclined, the Nightly Stage Shows (中秋综艺晚会) at Kreta Ayer Square will fill the evening air with song and dance performances by local and overseas troupes and entertainers that will amplify the celebratory mood during the festival.
The Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 will draw to a close with the Mass Lantern Walk (中秋大型游灯会) on 1 October, where up to 5,000 are expected to come together to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival under a moonlit night, topped with an exciting line-up of entertaining performances by dragon dance troupes and performing groups.

The Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 was organised by the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board begins with the Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony on 31 August 2019 which has illuminated the entire Chinatown till 28 September 2019.

The Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2016 culminated with the Mass Lantern Walk (牛车水中秋节2016大型游灯会) this evening that saw about 10,000 people take to the streets of Chinatown carrying lanterns of all shapes and sizes to soak in the festive mood.
Flagged off by Dr Lily Neo, Adviser to Jalan Besar GRC GROs (Kreta Ayer – Kim Seng), participants were entertained by live performances along the 1.2 km route from Kreta Ayer Square to New Bridge Road. This included local lion and dragon dance troupes decked in LED lights, dancers and artistes. At the main stage area at New Bridge Road, traditional music and dance performances by various clans and associations entertained the audience while local food trucks and push carts selling a delectable goodies added to the carnival-like atmosphere. There was also a fireworks finale at 8.45pm to cap the night’s event.
The Mass Lantern Walk is organised by Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee (KA-KS CCC) as part of the Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations to keep the community, young and old, in touch with the culture and heritage of celebrating this important occasion.

Ushering in the Year of the Pig and with the theme “Celebration of Abundance and Prosperity” (新春大吉福满城 欣欣向荣庆丰年), this year’s Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 has line-up an array of crowd-favourite activities that took place under a brilliant contemporary light-up where tradition meets high-tech design.
Besides the plump auspicious and prosperous pig sculptures adorning the main streets of Chinatown, the street light-up along South Bridge Road saw rows of 1,791 red and yellow lanterns forming two giant “春” (Spring) and three auspicious swimming Carps, a beautiful sight from an aerial view. Festival mainstays such as the Festive Street Bazaar with 313 stalls offered an endless supply of Chinese New Year goodies and the 12th International Lion Dance Competition, a sold-out event every year, has attract over two million visitors over the course of the celebrations. Lanterns was not the only ones shining – stars from Mediacorp came together with the crowd to usher in the Year of the Pig at the rousing Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party which culminated in a splendid display of fireworks and explosive firecrackers.
The Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019, organised by the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee (KA-KS CCC) and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, has kicked start on 20 January 2019 with the Official Light-up and Opening Ceremony (开幕典礼与亮灯仪式). Guest-of-Honour,Minister of Trade & Industry Mr. Chan Chun Sing, has grace the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour to officiate the street light-up and launch the Chinese New Year Celebrations at Chinatown with the event featuring highly entertaining performances by leading local and overseas troupes. The street light-up was lighted from 20 January to 6 March.
20,000 lanterns light up Chinatown
This year's Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival light-up has done it again, breaking its previous record of 16,800 lanterns with 20,000 colourful lanterns lining the streets.
