Chinatown - Ottawa Real Estate - Ottawa Living
Pho, Sushi, Fried Rice, Cantonese Chowmein… words synonymous with asian cuisine and culture. Immediately Chinatown Ottawa comes to mind. Stretching from Bay St. in the east to Rochester St. in the west, Chinatown runs along Somerset St and sport a veritable mix of businesses from many Asian cultures ranging from Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean and Thai.
At the entrance to Chinatown we are greeted by the famous Chinatown Gateway, a very beautiful start to our journey into the Ottawa Asian community. Donated by individuals, businesses and the community itself, the gateway serves as a landmark monument to welcome visitors. The other end of Chinatown is bordered by Preston St. and Little Italy, another vibrant community.
Chinatown Ottawa is a must see for many tourists all year round and there are many activities for both residents and tourists. Beyond eating and shopping, Chinatown hosts events that include:
Chinatown Remix - a partnership between business and artists to showcase works of art and during the event feature curators, performers, musicians, djs, and workshop instructors
The Winterlude Lunar parade featuring fire crackers, lion dancing and all sorts of celebrations to to bring in the Lunar New year with good fortunes and ward off evil spirits.
For residents, there is an eclectic mix of housing from single family homes, townhouses, apartment buildings, and condos. Centrally located, in close proximity to downtown and easy access to the queensway make the Chinatown area one of the most sought after neighbourhoods.
If you value vibrant dining, shopping and entertainment that is rich in Asian culture, and would like to live close to everything, Chinatown and the West Centretown Area is where you want to be.

Rideau Canal Ottawa Locks

The series of steep, step-like locks between the Château Laurier and Parliament Hill marks the north end of the 200km Rideau Canal, which flows all the way down to Kingston.
The Ottawa Locks, with its flight of eight locks is more than just an item of passing historic interest. These locks represent an amazing engineering achievement in the middle of the Canadian wilderness of the early 19th century and became the focus around which the city of Ottawa grew. The locks connect the channel of the Rideau Canal in Ottawa to the Ottawa River, almost 80 ft. (24.4 m) below.
The Rideau Canal uses a lock system that is still fully functioning. The gates that let boats in and out of the locks last approximately 12–15 years. When the canal was constructed, the gates were made at the lock sites by carpenters and blacksmiths, but presently they are made in Smiths Falls, Ontario, and sometimes take up to 2 months to build 1 set of gates. The gates used on the Rideau Canal are made of Douglas Fir and are mitre-shaped to ensure a tight seal due to water pressure. The average Rideau Canal lock lift uses 1.3 million litres

Little Italy - Ottawa Real Estate - Ottawa Living
Ciao, my Ottawa friends, and welcome to Little Italy, one of Ottawa’s most spirited communities. Located between Chinatown and Wellington West, and stretching as far South as Carling ave., this is the cultural centre of Ottawa's Italian community.
Preston Street or ‘Corso Italia’, at the heart of Little Italy, is the main commercial district, and is home to most of the small businesses and Italian restaurants in the neighbourhood. The majority of the businesses here are family operated with “an owner in the store” approach to customer service.
Preston and its side streets host a variety of events and festivals, like the annual Italian Week festival, Ottawa’s largest street party; La Vendemmia, a wine festival where businesses set up on the sidewalk; and Pomodoro, a massive tomato fight to raise funds for local charity.
This area is a dream location for vehicle enthusiasts, as the community hosts several automobile events such as the Ferrari festival with an Italian Car Parade, and the Show N’ Shine, which features members of Ottawa’s vintage car clubs who polish up their rides and show them off on Preston Street for all to admire.
With beautiful heritage buildings like The St. Anthony of Padua Church, and incredible architectural art like the Millennial Arch (and the Heritage Mural Project, the Bambini) celebrating the community, this European-style neighbourhood is packed full of culture.
Little Italy is also home to comedy clubs and The Gladstone theatre for thought-provoking entertainment, plus there is an intersection along Somerset Street, bringing together the neighbourhoods of Chinatown and Little Italy, which creates an interesting and diverse collection of restaurants, pubs, and homes.
There’s always something happening here in Little Italy, so come and check out why this vibrant community is where you want to be.

ULTIMATE Beavertail Food Tour in Ottawa, Canada - Part 1
I went to some of the most popular spots around the city, explored downtown Ottawa in under 24 hours and shot at the famous Beavertail location in Ottawa. Tried the Hazelnut Banana Beavertail, which is a fried dough pastry. They have locations across Canada with over 140 different locations across 6 countries. It is one of the popular things to try in Ottawa, however it can be found at many other locations within Canada. Went for a hike to a nearby trail in Nepean, the trail was really beautiful and mesmerizing. There are random shots around the city as well.
I hope you like the video and make sure to check out the places on your next visit to Ottawa.

Ottawa's Chinatown - Китайський район в Оттаві
This is a 7 minute video that offers a comprehensive glimpse into Ottawa's Asian part of town, dubbed Ottawa's Chinatown.
How to Get there by Foot, and What you will see along the way.
If you are going on foot to get to the Ottawa Chinatown Gateway (in the heart of the Asian part of Ottawa), go to Bank Street and head towards Somerset St. West. Then hang a right on Somerset St. W. (go West) and head towards the corner of Bronson and Preston and you are there. You will be able to see the main gateway already from Somerset and Bronson.
The gateway on Cambridge Street serves as a symbol of prosperity, health and good fortune and is of Chinese imperial-style design, with nine distinguished golden roofs covered with glazed tiles, as the sign says on the gateway entrance plaque.
Along the way you will notice many Asian businesses, and signs written on buildings in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese or some other Asian language. These are the predominent groups living in the area, You will also see St. Lukes Anglican Church of Canada and a small Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the name of Christ The Saviour in the midst of this Asian sea. On the corner of Preston and Somerset Sts., you will see a Vietnamese Commemorative Monument (erected on April 30, 1995) dedicated in memory of those who have lost their lives in their quest for freedom. Chinatown ends where Little Italy begins. As you near the bridge where the Ottawa Bathhouse and Ottawa Friends Recreation Centre is located. Then you can make your way back and enjoy it all again on your way back to your hotel or wherever you decide to spend your time in this wonderful city.
On Somerset there is about a 15 minute walk as I recall. You will go past Ken St.and Lyon St. and past Dundonald Park (address around 512 Somerset St.) on Somerset St. going towards Bronson. Enjoy!
