Wandering around and exploring Chinatown in the heart of Malacca (Melaka), Malaysia
This is a travel video of us wandering around and exploring crumbling colonial mansions, Chinese temples and other landmarks in Chinatown located in the heart of Malacca (Melaka), Malaysia. With our guesthouse situated in this area we've quickly taken a liking to this neighborhood. With plenty of shops, restaurants, colonial buildings and temples to visit we spent hours walking around. One of the first things we noticed were the red lanterns galore. Literally, they were everywhere in this Chinese neighborhood. Malacca is known for its colonial architecture and in my opinion has done a better job preserving its heritage than George Town, Penang.

Along the way we encountered cats and dogs, rickshaws and plenty of other attractions.
As goofy as we often are I started doing the Gangnam Style dance by Psy beside a horse mural. His music is really popular right now in SE Asia. Recently he held a concert in Penang that was a major hit.
As pet lovers, we were thrilled to encounter many cats and dogs along the way. Many of them were docile, given the heat and humidity, sleeping in the shade.
The highlight of our morning was visiting the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, which is a temple that celebrates a number of different faiths: Confucianism, Taoism and Chinese Buddhism.
With a mixture of different faiths there is a unique blend of incense candles, red dragons and well manicured fruit trees.
The most iconic landmark in this neighborhood for me is the Orangutan House. Run by local artist Charles Cham, it's a place where backpackers can get hand drawn t-shirts.
Every time I come here, I load up on his t-shirts and during my 2010 backpacking trip I only was wearing t-shirts from his shop!
We passed along Jonker Street, which is completely different by day than it is by night. By day there is traffic and most of the shops are closed; however, at night it turns into one of the most popular areas for pedestrians to shop, eat and mingle.

Exploring Melaka/Malacca II
Malacca, (Malay: Melaka; Tamil: மலாக்கா, simplified Chinese: 马六甲; traditional Chinese: 馬六甲), dubbed The Historic State[citation needed], is a state in Malaysia located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Strait of Malacca.
The state is bordered by Negeri Sembilan to the north and west and Johor to the south. The exclave of Cape Rachado also borders Negeri Sembilan to the north. Its capital is Malacca City, which is 148 kilometres (92 miles) south east of Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur, 235 kilometres (146 miles) north west of Johor's largest city Johor Bahru, and 95 km (59 miles) north west of Johor's second largest city, Batu Pahat. This historical city centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008.
Although it was the location of one of the earliest Malay sultanates, the local monarchy was abolished when the Portuguese conquered it in 1511. The head of state is the Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Governor, rather than a Sultan.

You'll notice how hectic and busy it gets along this street packed with tourists and locals alike along Jalan Hang Jebat. Afterwards we take you on a bicycle tour around the city where stop off at the church ruins. Our next activity is a night boat ride cruise along the Melacca River. One of our favorite activities was taking a rickshaw tour around the city. Feeling the heat we cool down with a delicious bowl of refreshing cendol. We take time to visit the many temples located around Chinatown. We satisfy our tastes buds by eating Peranakan cuisine which is also known as Baba Nyonya food including popiah, rojak and laksa. Next we explore the Chinatown area of Melaka enjoying many of the historic crumbling colonial mansions. After we go exploring and walking along the Melaka River enjoying the graffiti and murals we notice along the walls. We finish off with some time lapse sequences that includes shots of markets, the Dutch quarter and a few others spots. Overall, these are the activities we recommend others check out when they're touring around Malacca.

Malacca City is the capital city of the Malaysian state of Malacca. The Seri Negeri, the State Administrative and Development Centre which houses the Chief Minister's Office, the State Secretary's Office and the Legislative Assembly Hall is located in Malacca City. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with George Town of Penang on 7 July 2008. Most tourist attractions are concentrated in its small city centre which encompasses Jonker Walk which houses Malacca's traditional Chinatown that exhibits Peranakan architecture. A Famosa Fort, St. Paul Hill are among the tourist attractions located in the Bandar Hilir, old city area.
The older part of the city proper has, in addition to the old palace and the large buildings left by the Europeans, many private houses and shops from nearly a century or more ago, put up by Chinese traders. Many of these have beautiful details such as moulded porcelain tiles and painted plaster reliefs on the front. Unfortunately, they tend to be not well preserved and the city government decided to paint all the buildings

Welcome to the Old Town of Melaka. It is the third largest city in Malaysia and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded in the 14th century by a fleeing prince from Sumatra. It was later colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British. Today I am going to show you everything you can see and do in the Old Town. You just need one day to see it, now lets explore Melaka!
Christ Church was built by the Dutch in 1753 to commemorate the occupation of the city. It was later converted into an Anglican Church by the British. Next is St Paul’s Church, which was the main church in Melaka until the Dutch built Christ Church. Even before that it was used as a catholic church by the Portugues and when the British came they used it for ammunition warehouse.
Porta de Santiago or A Famosa is the one of the oldest surviving European constructions in Malaysia. Taming Sari Tower is a twirling observation deck that takes you 100 meters in the sky to get amazing views of Old Town Melaka.
Melaka is extremely hot! And the best way to cool down is by eating a cendol. I am trying a pretty fancy one with Durian, a Southeast Asian fruit that people love. Mix it up, and try! The fruit is infamous for its smell but it taste delicious!
This is Jonker Street, aka Melaka’s Chinatown street. It was once full of antique shops but those have since given way to souvenir shops and restaurants. The one dish you need to try here is Nyonya Laksa, which has spices, chillies, chicken, egg and shrimp, it’s so good!
Cheng Hoon Tenge Temple is the oldest functioning temple in Malaysia. It practices the three doctrinal systems of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. It is one of the most beautiful temples in Malaysia and it should not be missed!
Melaka is a picturesque colonial town definitely worth a visit.
We hope you enjoyed what to see and do in Melaka! Please subscribe, give us a thumbs up and leave us a comment below!

Malacca City (also spelled Melaka) is the capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in southwestern Malaysia. At its center, Jonker Street, Chinatown’s main thoroughfare, is known for antique shops and its night market. Nearby, the 17th-century Chinese Cheng Hoon Teng temple has ornate decorations and multiple prayer halls. A green, 3-tiered roof tops the 18th-century, Javanese-influenced Kampung Kling Mosque.

Rickshaw Tour Around Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia
In this travel video we decided to take a rickshaw tour around all of the main neighborhoods and attractions in the city of Melaka (Melacca), Malaysia. Our colorful rickshaw was brightly decorated or as Audrey exclaimed: It's decked out with flowers plenty of bling bling! I've certainly never been in a tuk-tuk or rickshaw quite like this one. In Cambodia they're quite spartan and in Thailand you're more likely to see advertising more than anything else.
What can make - or break - your experience on a rickshaw tour is the personality of your driver. Luckily, our driver was a friendly chap who enjoyed providing background information about all of the attractions and districts we passed along the way.

The weather was exceptionally hot and muggy - even by Malacca standards. Thus, we were thrilled to be catching a bit of a breeze and not having to walk or pedal to get from one attraction to the next.
This was the perfect opportunity for me to try some new filming angles and to be a bit silly.
I was able to convince the driver to honk the horn - for no apparent reason - just to have it on camera ;)
We also ended up taking a lot of selfies with exaggerated facial expressions.
Finally, I tried to focus on the details filming close up shots of the rickshaw, the man pedaling and various other focal points.
The highlights of the journey was visiting church ruins, which offered phenomenal views of the city.
From the high vantage point we noticed antiquated canon balls and unique Malaysian architecture.
I spotted a ferry that goes from Malaysia to Indonesia. Three years ago I booked a ticket for this ferry but ended canceling last minute after I changed my travel plans. I'm still keen to try this crossing sometime in the future.
Along the way we spotted a plethora of other bicycles, trishaws and cats in particular.
We finished our trip in Chinatown where our guest house was located.
The trip, very much catered towards tourists only, was overall 40 ringgit (roughly $13 USD).
Although our rickshaw ride was expensive we still enjoyed the tour. Sometimes paying for services, even extremely touristy ones, are worth the price.
Have you been on a rickshaw tour before? Is it something you'd like to try? Let me know in the comments below:
We're going on an hour long tour here. It cost 40 Ringgit, which is approximately thirteen US dollars. It is not the cheapest but it is going to be a really fun way to go around and see Melaka. Our rickshaw is all decked out with fabulous colors and bling bling and it looks pretty.
We've been dropped off on our tour where the river runs out to the sea. Behind us appears to be some kind of a oil rig or something and if you do a pan along here you can see how the river actually comes.
Here is the ferry that goes from Malaysia to Indonesia to the biggest island in Indonesia - Sumatra.
Meow meow!
Now our tour takes us into the Chinatown area of Malacca.
