14 Nice Melons at Chinchilla Qld
November 2019 (late spring)
Wichway headed North East away from Glenmorgan, to meet up with some friends at the Chinchilla showgrounds and to go out for the evening and enjoy some wonderful food and music. While here we explored both the town and some of the surrounding area.

Melon Mad Aussies Ski In The Bush At Chinchilla Melon Festival
The Australian bush is famous for its Kangaroos, and incredible landscapes, but skiing? Every two years the small Queensland country town of Chinchilla at the gateway to the outback holds its Melon Festival with a cheeky take on the sport of skiing.
Visitors get the chance to plunge their feet in fresh melons and take to the slopes for a spot of melon skiing. But if daredevils think any previous snow or water skiing experience might give them an edge, locals say they're in for a shock.

The Surat Basin --Australia's Clean Energy Capital
A wave of transformation is breathing life and economic vibrancy into regional centres across the country, with around $270bn in energy projects currently planned or underway.
All of this activity in the resources sector is igniting a property boom in hub towns such as Chinchilla, Roma and Miles in the Surat Basin, and savvy property investors are set to benefit.
These billion-dollar projects are designed to help meet the soaring global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG), the emerging clean placement fuel for coal, and coal itself.
This demand is coming predominantly from international export destinations in Asia, and more specifically China, which is experiencing the largest mass urbanization in history.
Infrastructure hot-spotting expert Flynn De Freitas from Omega Investments predicts that over the next ten years, the number of large or tiered cities in China will increase by 37, to 143 cities of at least a million people.
Clearly, international demand -- along with Australia's own domestic energy needs -- isn't expected to slow any time soon.
While all of this activity is all good news for the Australian economy, it also represents an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for property investors to secure high rents and strong capital growth in one hit.
De Freitas has been charting the property prospects of the Surat Basin for some time, and he believes the local real estate market offers strong returns to investors willing to take the plunge.
The unique and vital nature of the energy industry presents property investors with an opportunity to invest in Australia's new energy towns, he says.
These are towns where a social contract between the energy industry, government and local communities means that the billions of dollars in infrastructure investment by the energy industry is matched by millions of dollars in government social investment in local communities.
De Freitas says these social investments makes these communities more liveable and attractive for workers within the energy industry, which ultimately ensures that property investors enjoy sustainable, long term property growth -- thereby avoiding the boom/bust risks of mining boom towns.
The Surat Basin has been dubbed by some as Australia's future energy hub, with the emerging Energy Town of Chinchilla set to benefit from an impressive array of planned infrastructure projects worth billions of dollars.
Two of the largest infrastructure projects in the Surat Basin are the $15bn Queensland Curtis Island Liquefied Natural Gas (QCLNG) and the $20bn Australia Pacific Liquefied Natural Gas (APLNL) projects, which have both commenced construction.
They will involve a peak construction workforce of 6,500 in the Chinchilla region, dropping to a low of 1,400 over a four-year period.
The Chinchilla property market has already been richly rewarded by the energy industry, with the 2004-2006 construction 25km away of the Kogan Creek Power Station, which entailed 1,000 construction workers and 300 operational workers, virtually all located in Chinchilla, he says.
This $1.2bn energy project saw annual median property values rise by over 20% for three straight years... and contributed to the 11.9% average annual growth rate over the last 10 years to 2011.
De Freitas says these phenomenal growth rates all now look to be superseded by the QCLNG and APLNG projects.
Given the impact of one single $1.2bn project, the next decade of growth for Chinchill's property market looks very favourable indeed.

EP.1 CARAVAN AUSTRALIA ON A BUDGET! | Brisbane to Charleville QLD | Outback Travel, Free Camping
Welcome to Episode 1 of our Caravanning Australia On A Budget series! We travel around the country in a Jayco Starcraft Caravan, towed behind our Nissan Patrol 4.8L Y61.
We're a family of four who've been living the vanlife for about three years now. These days you'll find us wandering slowly across the country - exploring, homeschooling the kids and picking up work along the way.
IN THIS EPISODE...
We head off from Brisbane as we wave goodbye to family and friends in the area. The August winds got us coming out of Toowoomba though, which found us pulled over on the side of the highway to strap the awning that had come undone!
First Free Camp was at Bowenville Reserve, Wainui (south of Dalby). Beautiful spot with toilets, bins and a creek.
Next stop was Chinchilla to check out the Big Watermelon. Just out of town we discovered Chinchilla Weir, which is a fantastic Donation Camp. It even has power and water for a handful of people!
From Chinchilla we ventured on to Miles and spent a few hours stepping back in time at the Miles Historical Village. I've got to say, it's the best old world village we've come across yet. You can actually wander around ye olde town and see how it would have been way back in the 1800's.
After a bit of shopping in Roma, we had a look at the Biggest Bottle Tree in town, which was a lovely old thing - over 100 years old.
Our next camp was at Muckadilla, which is by donation. The teeny tiny community provides toilets, free hot showers and rubbish bins. Not a bad spot to chill for a few days.
Then onwards we went to the Outback town of Mitchell. This place was on our bucket list for the trip as we wanted to soak ourselves in the hot Artesian Spa. It was well worth the $26 family pass to enjoy the 41'C water! It's even said to have healing qualities.
In Mitchell we stayed at Neil Turner Weir and got quite comfortable for about four or five days. Onsite was clean flushing toilets, rubbish bins, electric BBQ's and a nice spot for fishing and water activities.
Next stop for us was Augathella, mainly because we wanted to capture the Big Meat Ant, which was cool. We stayed at the Warrego River Camping spot right in town, across from the Ellengowan Hotel (which does a mean feed by the way). The camp has toilets, bins and drinking water on tap. Plus, a Skate Park for the kids - that was a cool surprise!
Our las leg of this journey was to Charleville. It's as fast west as we're going at the moment, before we head south-east and trek towards New South Wales.
Charleville houses the Cosmos Centre of Queensland. We did the Astrology by Day tour, but unfortunately the Observatory experience was clouded out.
Ahh well, you win some, you lose some. I'm sure we'll find another Observatory somewhere around the country.

TUNE IN TO EPISODE 2 as we head to Lightning Ridge, the infamous Opal Mining town in New South Wales, where people go to disappear!

Mining companies in WA are once again competing for workers | 7.30
Recruitment specialists say mining companies, desperate for workers in remote areas, are again turning to FIFO workers from the eastern states, but are unlikely to pay the sky-high wages seen in the last big boom.
