Mexico
BANCO CHINCHORRO
Located at the south-eastern tip of the State of Quintana Roo in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve encompasses within over 144,866 ha a mosaic of open water, sea grass beds, mangroves, sand beaches and coral reefs that is considered one of the most outstanding marine sites in the region. Banco Chinchorro is the biggest platform type reef complex system in Mexico and because of its isolated position, it represents well-preserved natural ecosystems.
Corals characterize the area and form a circular strip made up of coral islets, which constitute the morphological structure of Banco Chinchorro. Due to this coral topography and the irregular submarine topography and orientation, a great diversity of habitats co-exist. Some 95 coral species have been inventoried.
Only 0.4% of the core area of the biosphere reserve is terrestrial and is strongly influenced by the sea. The saline substratum allows only the growth of halophyte or coastal dune vegetation and mangroves. The buffer area comprises the large area of the coral circular strip and a large marine zone to a depth of 60 meters.
Seagrass beds are abundant in the Cayo Norte zone and in the interior lagoon of Cayo Centro, serving as reproduction and breeding refuges of way ecologically and economically important species. In this latter category, the two main species of importance are found: the Caribbean lobster (Panulirus argus) and the conch (Strombus gigas).

Alamar (Trailer)
Banco Chinchorro, on the Yucatán peninsula, is one of the richest coral reefs in Mexico. The native people, descendents of the Mayas, live on the water, in huts propped up on stilts—the reef is a nature reserve, and no building is allowed on the islands. One day a fisherman who lives in one of these huts receives some visitors: his son, Jorge, and his five-year-old grandson, Natan, who is on a visit from Rome, where he lives with his Italian mother.
Alamar quietly observes these three characters as they spend their days fishing, swimming and tending to their boat, their existence in harmonious rhythm with their surroundings. At the film's poetic heart is the subtly delineated relationship between Jorge and Natan. Enveloped by sea, sand and sky, father and son grow ever closer, and a bond is formed that not even the fact of Natan's looming departure can break.

Banco Chinchorro

I took this video just of the divers in my group while in a sparse area of the reef we were diving in. The reef itself is better than this so don't judge based on the video.
Mahahual Malecón, Costa Maya, Yucatán Peninsula, Quintana Roo, México
Mahahual, México is a village on the Costa Maya in the municipality of Othon P. Blanco on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico located on the Yucatán Peninsula. Previously a fishing village, it is now a rapidly developing tourist center.
The village of Mahahual is only about 2 miles away from the Costa Maya cruise port, and cruise ships can easily be seen from the village. Mahahual has soft sand beaches, grass thatched palapas, and a coral reef a short distance off-shore called Banco Chinchorro, as well as several bars, restaurants, and shops.
A new development called New Mahahual is being created directly inland from the port. When ships are in port, the village is busy with cruise passengers.
Costa Maya Port started operations in the year of 2001. Since then it has become the second most important cruise ship port in Mexico. It has been recognized in the cruise industry for being one of the leading and most responsive ports in the Caribbean.
Costa Maya's port has a new and modern tourist shopping mall. The center has a central plaza with saltwater pools and 'swim-up' style bars. There are several jewellery stores and many small shops selling ubiquitous souvenir items. It is generally open only to cruise ship passengers.
Costa Maya is the closest port of access to many of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan including Chacchoben and Kohunlich. These sites are substantially less excavated than the better known pyramids of Tulum and Coba to the north; Chichen Itza and Uxmal in Yucatan.

Snorkeling Yucatán 2018 – DEAD REEFS (4K | UHD)
This (sad) film is based on video footage taken during some ten hours of snorkeling around the south coast of Yucatán, Mexico, from March 23rd to April 3rd, 2018. Having died over a large area, the coral reefs are in a post-bleaching state. As a result they are completely covered by algae now. Nevertheless, enjoy my film!

Big Marine Animals - Yucatan Dive Trek
The waters off Mexico´s Yucatan Peninsula offer keen divers the opportunity to encounter several species of big marine animals in one trip.
During the summer, roughly 35 nautical miles north of Isla Mujeres and Cancún, the waters are teeming with Whale Sharks.
In the same general area during the winter months, another unique experience takes place that is much faster-paced—groups of sailfish pack-hunting bait balls of sardines.
About an hour south, near Playa del Carmen, a large group of pregnant bull sharks gathers on a sand bar just 200 meters from shore. The conditions are prime for one of the best shark-feeding dives around.
Four hours further south, near the Mexico-Belize border and worlds away from Playa del Carmen, is Xcalak. Declared a National Marine Park in 2004, Xcalak offers several pristine and one-of-a-kind dive sites.
At La Poza, divers have the chance to encounter large groups tarpon, and the National Park itself is home to the world´s largest population of wild manatees, which can often be found on the reef.
Keep going another 40 nautical miles from Xcalak to the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve, and you can have a close encounter with wild American crocodiles, an experience unlike anything else on this planet. The conditions here enable us to interact safely with these incredible creatures in clear water.
Mexico is one of the most bio-diverse countries on earth, and as you can see from these few examples, there are enough big animal encounters available here to keep any diver coming back again and again.
Costa Maya Mexico still keeps it's natural beauty. ????

Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve - XTC Dive Center
Banco Chinchorro is the largest stand-alone reef in the Northern Hemisphere and one of the healthiest. Located 36 nautical miles from XTC Dive Center's private pier, it is one of the last unspoiled dive destinations in the Caribbean.
Vastly biodiverse and teeming with sea life, Chinchorro is legendary for its unique reef and wreck-diving opportunities. It contains more than one hundred documented shipwrecks, many of historical significance, easily accessible to divers.
It is also home to the largest and purest population of American crocodiles in the world. The crystal-clear waters and conditions in the Biosphere Reserve make it the ideal location to photograph, film and study these amazing living fossils.
XTC is the only privately owned company with an official concession to run crocodile encounters inside the Biosphere Reserve—an experience unlike any other.
Banco Chinchorro is a highly protected area that can be accessed only by special permit and thus, sees very little dive traffic.
Less than one thousand divers per year are lucky enough to visit this remote and pristine location...we hope you will be one of them.
