INDIA: CALCUTTA: CHINESE COMMUNITY
Hindi/Nat
The Indian city of Calcutta is home to one of the oldest and most deeply rooted Chinese communities in the world.
Despite meshing closely into Indian society, Calcutta's Chinese have maintained their identity and customs.
But now there are fears that the community is threatened with many of its younger members moving abroad to seek a better life.
The first Chinese immigrant is believed to have arrived in Calcutta around 200 years ago.
Since then, a 20-thousand strong Chinese community has settled around Calcutta's Tangra neighbourhood. Much of their commerce takes place in the so-called China market in Tangra.
The community's cultural heritage continues to flourish in the foreign environment.
Two Chinese newspapers, Yan Thoo Nyit Pao and the hand written Yin Thoo Shan Pao, keep them abreast of the latest news.
As in other parts of the world, Chinese cooking has proved popular with local people and Calcutta is home to a plethora of Chinese restaurants.
Though most of the Chinese community were born in India many of them have to leave the country periodically in order to get their visas renewed.
Many younger Chinese are now opting to stay abroad rather than continue the family business in Calcutta.
SOUNDBITE: (Hindi)
Though we are born in India it pains when we have to go abroad. We have to get a renewal, which takes time, about six to seven months.
SUPER CAPTION: Mrs Lee Layoung, restaurant owner
Calcutta's Chinese community also runs a thriving leather industry. Hides are treated at factories like this and then processed into finished products like leather shoes which are sold in shops throughout the city.
In a climate of tolerance, Chinese Buddhist temples stand side by side with Hindu shrines.
The Indian authorities have allowed the Chinese community to set up special schools where children study their own curriculum.
Though the children study their own language and customs they are also taught the local language. The younger generation is more Indian than Chinese.

Nipponzan Myohoji (Japanese) Buddhist Temple, Kolkata
This is one of the most beautiful and well maintained Buddhist Temples of Kolkata.
The Japanese Buddhist Temple is located on the Lake Road, now known as Kabi Bharati Sarani, in Dhakuria area of South Kolkata. Sadly its presence is unknown to most Kolkatans.
The temple was founded by Nichidatsu Fujii (1885 – 1985). Nichidatsu Fujii was a disciple of the great Japanese Buddhist monk Nichiren, who held the opinion of Lotus Sutra.
At the entrance of the temple is a small signage, which reads “Na – Mu – Myo – Ho – Ren – Ge – Kyo.” translated it means “I take refuge in the wonderful law of the Lotus Flower Sutra.”
The morning services are held from 5:00 am to 6:30 am while the evening services are held from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm and people of all faiths are free to attend the service and are welcomed in the temple.
Although unknown to most of Kolkatan the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple, which is popularly known as the Japanese Buddhist Temple, remains a oasis of peace for people of all faiths.
Chinatown|The Chinese Kali Temple of Kolkata|Chinese Kali Temple|Walk With Bong Boys| Kali Puja 2019
India’s eastern city of Kolkata is known for its temples dedicated to the worship of Hindu Goddess Kali. But this particular temple is a rare one. Here, Goddess Kali is worshipped by Chinese devotees.
San AIchan(John Cheng) is the caretaker of a unique temple to the Goddess Kali in the heart of Kolkata’s Tangra area. The area is also known as India's very own Chinatown, with its unique symbols of cross-cultural assimilation. Formerly a Buddhist, John Cheng now considers himself a Chinese Hindu, and is the third generation caretaker of the temple. Together with the locals from the community, the temple acts as a melting pot for the Indian and Chinese communities in Kolkata.
The Chinese Kali Temple (so the marble plaque says) is not only a bridge between Chinese and Indian cultures, but also strengthens bonds in the Chinese community itself.
For the rest of the year, even neighbours hardly get to see each other. But on Kali puja, most Chinese residents of Tangra take the day off and get together in front of the Kali temple. If you stand at the gate on any weekday, you would see Chinese men and women pause here, take off their shoes, and fold their hands and bow.
Kali puja is special for us. Our activities start early in the morning. Most of us have been given our responsibilities for the day. Some get the flowers, some fruits and sweets for the prasad and a few oversee the preparations. The panditji (a Bengali Brahmin) comes here every day for the morning and evening aarti, says an enthusiastic Ison Chen. The 55-year-old has been selected by the community to be in charge of the temple.
But how did the temple start off? The site is about 60 years old, says Chen. In those days, it was a couple of sindoor-smeared black stones under an old tree. Local people used to worship these stones. Seeing them, even the Chinese got attracted. The story goes that a 10-year-old boy of the Chinese community was once very ill. Even doctors could not cure him. His parents had lost hope and lay him down near the tree and prayed for several nights at a stretch. A miracle happened. The boy got well, and the site became special for all of us.
Most of us are Buddhists and some are Christians, but we are great fans of the Kali temple also. We consider it an integral part of the community , says Chen.

A RARELY KNOWN BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN KOLKATA
#kolkatavlog,#rarelyknowntemple,#kolkatapixel
Hey guys here we are again with our #4th vlog.
Few people living on Calcutta’s (Kolkata) Lake Road are aware that there is a Japanese Buddhist Temple in the vicinity, and even fewer are aware that it is officially called The Nipponzan Myohoji Temple
Nichidatsu Fujii (1885 – 1985) was a Japanese monk who was deeply influenced by the writings of Nichiren, a Japanese Monk revered as a saint. Nichiren held the opinion that the Lotus Sutra, a collection of teachings of the Buddha near the end of his life, was the sole means of attaining enlightenment, and that one day the Lotus Sutra would be preached in India. It was with this aim in mind that Nichidatsu Fujii arrived in Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1931 and walked the streets of the city beating his drum and chanting “Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō”, which translates to “I take refuge in (devote or submit myself to) the wonderful law of the Lotus Flower Sutra”. This chant or mantra may still be seen above the door of the Nipponzan Myohoji Japanese Buddhist Temple of Calcutta (Kolkata).
This piece of land on 60/20(1) Lake Road, Calcutta 700019 is where the Nipponzan Myohoji Japanese Buddhist Temple was built in 1935.
The Nipponzan Myohoji Japanese Buddhist Temple has regular prayers even today. The morning service is from 5am to 6:30am, and the evening service is from 5pm to 6:30pm. There are practicing Buddhists in Calcutta who attend the service.
The temple was featured in director Dibakar Banerjee’s Hindi feature film “Detective Byomkesh Bakshy” which released in April 2015. If you are looking for directions to the Nipponzan Myohoji Japanese Buddhist Temple, imagine yourself standing at Gol Park, facing the Dhakuria Bridge. You take the road which runs under the bridge, and to its left and proceed straight till its end and then turn right. Proceed straight for a bit, and you will find the temple on your left. While in the neighbourhood, see if you can spot the residence of the current President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, which is right next door.

India's only Chinatown in Kolkata was once home to tens of thousands of ethnic Chinese, but that changed after the Indo-China war in 1962. Despite being Indian citizens, opportunities for the ethnic Chinese population mirrored the relations between India and China. Now that the two sides are looking to boost ties with bilateral visits, the Chinese community hope their prospects in India will improve. Al Jazeera's Divya Gopalan reports from Kolkata, India.

Burmese Pagoda (Myanmar Buddhist Temple) in Eden Garden, Kolkata
In 1840, the Auckland Circus Garden, later renamed as Eden Garden, was opened to the public. The prominent attraction of the garden is a picturesque Burmese Pagoda, standing in the northern part of the garden, in an island, almost surrounded by a water body. The Pagoda, originally belonged to Myanmar or erstwhile Burma, has an intriguing story to tell. The decorative structure was built in Prome, Burma (now Pyay, Myanmar) sometime in 1852 by Ma Kin, the widow of Maung Honon who was the Governor of Prome. In 1853, when Lord Dalhousie visited Prome after the town was taken by the British, he decided to shift the Pagoda to Calcutta. It was dismantled and brought to the City by the East India Company ship and reached Hooghly on September 29, 1854. At first it was kept in Fort William and later moved to the Garden. . It was set up in the gardens over three months, October, November and December, 1856 by a dozen Burmese artisans. The wood carvers of Pagoda are historically renowned for their technical skill and creativity. The pillars and eaves are encrusted with intricate and flamboyant wood carvings. Among the decorative elements are carved pediments decorated with flaring ornamental elements in the form of haunches of a wild ox known as saing-baung, flame-like finials, mythical birds and spirit figures from Burmese cosmology. A fading plaque by the pagoda testifies to this. Now it is a shabby, crumbling heap. The beautiful red-gold structure is now under the restoration process for the last three years. Caged for months inside bamboo scaffolding the charming monument is a victim of neglect. The area of the garden is approximately 15.6 acres of land, maintained by the Forest Department. Series of Coconut Trees, vast green lawns, water fountains will surely provide its visitors a pleasant feel.

The Documentary Of Achipur Chinese Temple
Achipur is the site where one of the earliest sugar mills in India was set up in 1770’s by a Chinese businessman Tong Achew. The then Governor General Warren Hastings offered land to Tong Achew to set up his sugar factory. Chinese workers were brought by Achew to work in his factory. The Chinese population of Kolkata owes its origins mostly to the workers and associates of Tong Achew. The tomb of Tong Achew and his Chinese Temple built in 1718 still stands at Achipur.

A Documentary about Chinese culture in India , kolkata
APC Collage , documentary about Chinese new year .
Chinese Makali Temple, kolkata.
Chinese Makali Temple
The Chinese kali Temple is located in
Kolkata's Tangra (Chinatown ).
It's best example of assimilation, unity and acceptance that's missed so much in today's life.
The Chinese and Hindu neighbourhood are barely seen mingling with each other, and there is an energy that surrounds the people of the place.
The story behind the temple was a 10year old boy of the Chinese community was once very ill. Even doctors could not cure him. His parents had lost hope and lay him down near the tree and prayed for several nights at a stretch. A miracle happened. The boy got well, and this became special for all of us.
Most of Buddhist and some are Christians, they are great fans of the kali Temple.
This just goes on to show that religion and faith are poles apart. And for you to have faith, religion is not a necessity, nor a need.

Kolkata's Hand-Pulled Rickshaws | Unique Stories from India
Kolkata's quaint hand pulled rickshaws may not be around much longer.
Naresh Yadav has operated a hand-pulled rickshaw in Kolkata for 45 years. Ever since he came to the city following his uncle's footsteps, it's all he's ever known how to do. Starting his day at 6am, Naresh plies the bylanes of Kolkata, hoping to pick up a fare. When he started doing this for a living, the fare used to be 30 paise. Today, it's Rs. 20. Saving what he can, he sends home a meagre Rs. 2000-5000 a month to his family back in Bihar.
Rain or shine, Naresh will be out on the street, plying a dying trade. With the passing of the Calcutta Hackney-Carriage (Amendment) Bill, 2006, hand pulled rickshaws were banned in Kolkata. However, a High court order decreed a stay on the legislation. How much longer can this arrangement last without new licenses being issued for rickshaw pullers?
101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honours the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

Chinatown in Kolkata, India's Only China Town
Old Chinatown Tiretta Bazar - Terreti Market - Chinese Street Food Breakfast / Chinese Temples / Chinese Church / Chinese New Year Celebration / Chinese Para
New Chinatown Tangra - There are Many Restaurants Specializing in Authentic Tasty Chinese Food / Chinese Cemeteries / Hungry Ghost Festival / Chinese School / Buddha Purnima Festival / Chinese New Year Celebration
One of the best ways to start your day's food expedition is to have a slice of China in your breakfast... and for this what can be a better place than Kolkata's (Calcutta's) very own China Town. It is a very interesting fact that Kolkata (Calcutta) is the only city in India that has a China Town. The Chinese have settled in Kolkata as early as the 1780s, and since then they have played a significant role in defining Kolkata's (Calcutta's) cuisine. Kolkata has mainly two China Towns where the Chinese are settled... one in the Tiretta bazar area, that is known as Old China Town, and another in Tangra, known as New China Town. The famous Chinese breakfast is available in both these places - Tiretta bazar and Tangra.
