China is the world's Number 1 fireworks producer, exporting 45 million boxes of fireworks to more than 96 countries each year.
Fireworks performances accompany many global events, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in June this year.
But there is a darker side to the industry.
Fires and explosions frequently occur and hundreds of people die in China in accidents involving fireworks every year.
Despite that, some local governments have successively lifted the ban on exploding fireworks during festivals in recent years.
STORYLINE:
Liuyang city in the middle of Hunan Province is known as the home of the fireworks industry.
It was a reputation the city lived up to during June's Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) Summit (June 15) when it provided the fireworks for the event.
Founded in 2001, the SCO brings together China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Tanghua Fireworks Factory, one of the biggest producers of fireworks in Liuyang, is also one of the biggest fireworks exporters.
The products of Tanghua have been sold to more than 20 countries, including those in the European Union and in the United States.

Chinese Artist Creates Ladder Of Fire
You’ve seen colorful fireworks on the Fourth of July, but have you seen it create art? China’s Cai Guo-Qiang added to his exciting gunpowder art portfolio with a 1,650 foot ladder made out of fire. Guo-Qiang said, the most powerful artwork is when there's fear.” After failed attempts in 1994, 2001, and 2012, he finally created his dream work. A documentary about his artwork called “Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang” is on Netflix.
