Russia : Oranienbaum
Oranienbaum is a Russian royal residence, located on the Gulf of Finland west of St. Petersburg. The Palace ensemble and the city centre are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
From 1756 to 1762, the architect Antonio Rinaldi built the Peterstadt Fortress ensemble on the bank of the Karost River for Grand Duke Peter Fedorovitch. In 1762, Empress Catherine II ordered the construction of the suburb residence called My Own Countryside House. For that purpose Rinaldi built the Chinese Palace (1762–1768), a mix of Baroque architecture, Classicism and Chinese motifs, the Katalnaya Gorka (roller coaster) Pavilion (1762–1774), a cupola pavilion, and the Gates of Honor with the tower crowned by a spire.
Chinese Palace in Oranienbaum
From the outside, the Chinese palace is a relatively simple building, single-storey except for the small central pavilion, painted in a mellow combination of ochre and yellow. The seventeen rooms inside, decorated by Rinaldi and other leading artists and craftsmen of the day, feature pink, blue and green scagliola, painted silks, and intricate stucco work. Rinaldi's parquet floors are wonderfully ornate, using several types of rare Russian and imported wood.
Among the highlights of the Chinese Palace interiors are the Glass Beaded Salon, the walls of which are hung with 12 panels of richly coloured tapestries depicting exotic birds and fauna. The fine white glass beads that form the backdrop of the tapestries give the whole room a diaphanous, shimmering quality that was designed to be particularly effective in the glowing twighlight of the White Nights. The full influence of Chinoiserie is in evidence in the Large Chinese Salon, where the walls are covered with marquetry paneling of wood and walrus ivory depicting oriental landscapes, and large Chinese lanterns hanging in the corners. The room also contains an English-made billiard table with superb wood carving.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (7 May [O.S. 25 April] 1840 – 6 November [O.S. 25 October] 1893) was a Russian composer of the romantic period. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, bolstered by his appearances as a guest conductor in Europe and the United States.
Although musically precocious, Tchaikovsky was educated for a career as a civil servant. When an opportunity for a musical education arose, he entered the nascent Saint Petersburg Conservatory, from which he graduated in 1865. The formal Western-oriented teaching he received there set him apart from composers of the contemporary nationalist movement embodied by the Russian composers of The Five, with whom his professional relationship was mixed. Tchaikovsky's training set him on a path to reconcile what he had learned with the native musical practices to which he had been exposed from childhood. From this reconciliation he forged a personal but unmistakably Russian style. The principles that governed melody, harmony and other fundamentals of Russian music ran completely counter to those that governed Western European music; this seemed to defeat the potential for using Russian music in large-scale Western composition or for forming a composite style, and it caused personal antipathies that dented Tchaikovsky's self-confidence. Russian culture exhibited a split personality, with its native and adopted elements having drifted apart increasingly since the time of Peter the Great.

The Ceremonial Rooms of the Main Favorite of Peter III Opened in Peterhof
Subscribe to Vesti News
The famous Vorontsova's rooms were grandly re-opened after restoration in Peterhof. This is a complex of ground-floor premises in the Great Menshikov Palace of Oranienbaum. In late 18th century, it was residence to an official favorite of the Grand Duke Pyotr III Fyodorovich, a maid of honor Elizaveta Vorontsova. After almost three centuries, the ceremonial rooms regained their former decor and furnishings. Ekaterina Fisenko will show the restored palace.

1892
Here I present a album of photographs by Yuli Mikhailovich Shokalski (1856-1940), of the Russian Grand Palace and park of Oranienbaum taken in 1892.
The palace is located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland in the present-day town of Lomonosov, some 40 km west of St. Petersburg.
Peter the Great gave the grounds to his closest advisor and friend Alexander Danilovich Menshikov in 1707. The opulent palace was built in stages and was led by the architect D.M. Fontana, later replaced by I.H. Schedel . Interestingly, Oranienbaum was the only palace around St. Petersburg not to have been captured by Nazi forces during the Great Patriotic War.
Yuli Mikhailovich Shokalsky was a Russian geographer, oceanographer and cartographer. A grandson of Anna Kern, Pushkin's celebrated mistress, Shokalski graduated from the Naval Academy in 1880 and made a career in the Imperial Russian Navy, helping establish the Sevastopol Marine Observatory and rising to the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1912. At the Naval School he taught mathematics, navigation and physical geography. At the same time, he developed interest in limnology and meteorology and became the most prolific Russian author on the subjects. In the Marine Miscellanies alone, he published some 300 articles.
He also taught at the Naval Academy in Leningrad University. During this time he was elected as full member of the Russian Geological Society.
He became Chairman of the Russian Geographical Society from 1917 to 1931.
