Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya (UNESCO/NHK)
The Mahabodhi Temple Complex is one of the four holy sites related to the life of the Lord Buddha, and particularly to the attainment of Enlightenment. The first temple was built by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century B.C., and the present temple dates from the 5th or 6th centuries. It is one of the earliest Buddhist temples built entirely in brick, still standing in India, from the late Gupta period.

Built in Chinese architectural style by the Chinese government and the Buddhist monks, the Chinese monastery though a very small structure in Bodh Gaya, is worth visiting. Dedicated to the Lord Buddha, the monastery houses a Chinese temple, which is further an excellent illustration of the amalgamation of the Chinese architecture with religion. The monastery is located near the Maha Bodhi temple complex and is open for the visitors from 7am to 5 pm with lunch in between.
Located in southern part of the Indian state of Bihar, Bodh Gaya is one of the four major sacred places along with Lumbini, Sarnath and Kushinagar, venerated by the Buddhists from all across the globe.
Mahabodhi Temple Bodh Gaya India
Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya : flying over Buddhism's most holy spot
An aerial view of Mahabodhi temple in Gaya district of Bihar. Muchalinda Lake at the far left area of the temple complex and it has a Buddha idol in the center. The temple has gardens known as Jai Prakash udhyan. One can see the Falgu river near the temple. There is a heart shaped pond in the Mahabodhi temple complex. There are many temples near Mahabodhi temple. One can see the Hanuman temple, Shiva temple and Jagannath Temple from the sky.
The present Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya comprises the 50 m high grand Temple, the Vajrasana, sacred Bodhi Tree and other six sacred sites of Buddha’s enlightenment, surrounded by numerous ancient Votive stupas, well maintained and protected by inner, middle and outer circular boundaries. A seventh sacred place, the Lotus Pond, is located outside the enclosure to the south.
The most important of the sacred places is the giant Bodhi Tree, to the west of the main temple, a supposed direct descendant of the original Bodhi Tree under which Buddha spent his First Week and had his enlightenment, the Animeshlochan Chaitya (prayer hall) where Buddha is believed to have spent the Second Week. Buddha spent the Third Week walking eighteen paces back and forth in an area called Ratnachakrama (the Jewelled Ambulatory). The spot where he spent the Fourth Week is Ratnaghar Chaitya, located to the north-east near the enclosure wall. Immediately after the steps of the east entrance on the central path there is a pillar which marks the site of the Ajapala Nigrodh Tree, under which Buddha meditated during his Fifth Week. He spent the Sixth Week next to the Lotus Pond to the south of the enclosure, and the Seventh Week was spent under the Rajyatana Tree, to the south-east of the main temple, currently marked by a tree. Next to the Bodhi Tree there is a platform attached to the main temple made of polished sandstone known as Vajrasana (the Diamond Throne), originally installed by Emperor Asoka to mark the spot where Buddha sat and meditated.

Thai Monastery at Bodh Gaya - Bihar
Thai Monastery or Buddhist Temple at Bodh Gaya was built in 1956 by Thailand Monarch at request of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to strengthen relations between the two countries. It is a unique and the only Thai Temple in India. This temple displays the elegance of Thai architecture. The Thai Temple is adorned with sloping and curved roof which is covered with golden tiles. The exterior is exquisite and is not to be missed. The temple stands facing the main road, next to the tourist bungalow.
The temple houses a beautifully carved gigantic bronze statue of Lord Buddha. The atmosphere inside the sanctum is serene and silence falls on the ears upon entry into the monastery.
A 25 meter high statue of Buddha has been recently built in the garden near the Wat Thai Temple
