The Chiniki Trico Partnership began through a collaboration of these two very different groups that evolved into an inspiring vision to create long-term, positive economic impact and prosperity for the people of the Chiniki Nation.
Chief Aaron Young of the Chiniki Nation first reached out to Trico Homes in 2015 to request help in restoring 159 homes on the Nation that were left badly damaged from the 2013 flood. The restoration partnership was successful with all of the homes completed to a very high standard in a timely and respectful manner. Trico encouraged Chiniki involvement in the restoration by providing employment opportunities to the Nation’s members throughout the project.
The restoration partnership revealed the Nation and Trico could be stronger together to create positive impact, prosperity and self-reliance for the Chiniki people. The Chiniki Trico Partnership is able to bring business expertise and resources to advance ideas not previously achievable.
In 2017 Chiniki Trico developed and progressed business plans for two major initiatives closely aligned to the values and beliefs of the Chiniki Nation. The first is the Renewable Energy Project that will create employment, skills development and revenue for the Nation by generating solar power into the Alberta grid. The second initiative is the Chiniki Cultural Centre, which is positioned to be a major tourism destiNation. The Cultural Centre will share an authentic First Nations cultural and educational experience while creating meaningful employment and building community connection and pride amongst the Nation.
Chiniki Trico will continue to develop future initiatives to support its Vision and Mission to create self-reliance for the Chiniki Nation. The Chiniki Trico Partnership will also strive to be a positive example and resource for other nations to follow.
