Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique protected area located in the rain shadow region in the eastern slope of Western Ghats, adjoining Tamilnadu. The area is diverse in eco systems and rich in ethnic cultural heritage. It is a well known repository of medicinal plants and supports a healthy population of grizzled giant squirrel, star tortoise, tufted grey langur, gaur, spotted deer, slender loris, wild elephant, crocodile, tiger, leopard and many a birds, insects and plants.

Located in the Nilgiri Mountains, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a bio-diversity hotspot. The sanctuary is home to over 580 species of fauna that includes 34 species of mammals and 29 species of snakes.About 65 km from Munnar in Idukki district of Kerala, Chinnar is spread over an area of 90.44 sq km and is among the 12 wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala.The sanctuary is home to over 965 species of flora. The vegetation mainly comprises of wet grasslands and south Western Ghats rainforests. The sanctuary also hosts large sandalwood forest.Chinnar is an ideal spot for bird watching. The sanctuary hosts over 245 varieties of birds that include yellow throated bulbuls. Panther, spotted deer, hanuman monkey,common langur, Indian elephant, Indian star tortoise, etc. are some of the animals that can be spotted here.The Manjampatti white bison, a type of gaur, in the park. The Manjampatti white bison are notable for their distinctive ash-grey color unlike the black color most gaurs have.As one walks along Chinnar and Pambar Rivers, sights of grizzled giant squirrels are quite common. Chinnar and Pambar Rivers which flow through the sanctuary are important sources of water. The rivers are home to over 42 species of fishes.Chinnar Reserved Forest was declared a protected area in August 1984. The area falls in Marayur and Kanthalloor Panchayaths of Devikulam Taluk in Idukki.The spectacular Thoovanam waterfall located deep within the sanctuary adds to its scenic and wildlife beauty. The watchtower in the park offers stunning panoramic views of the sanctuary.

Chinnar and Thoovanam Waterfalls, Marayoor
Chinnar wildlife Sanctuary is in Idukki district and near to Marayoor and Munnar. It is one of the best place for trekking through the forest. And the Thoovanam waterfalls is situated in Alampetty near to Chinnar and Marayoor. We have to take trekking ticket from Alampetty trekking center and the time is from 8.00 AM to 2.00 PM. We have to walk 3 km through the forest and a forest guide will come for directions.

It is under the jurisdiction of and contiguous with Eravikulam National Park to the south. Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary is to the north and Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary is to the east. It forms an integral part of the 1,187 km2 (458 sq mi) block of protected forests straddling the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in the Aanaimalai Hills. The Western Ghats, Anamalai Sub-Cluster, including all of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.

A beautiful view of Pambar River in Chinnar WildLife Sanctuary, Munnar
We have shot this video almost 7-8 kms from the Chinnar checkpost, while driving from Udumalpet to Munnar, which comes under the chinnar wildlife sanctuary. A beautiful view of Pambar River which comes from Thoovanam waterfalls and reaches Amaravthi river and then to the Amaravathi Dam.
