Baan Chinpracha Phuket is considered as one of the most beautiful and well-preserved Sino Portuguese mansions in Phuket Old Town. The magnificent white mansion dates back to more than a century and offers visitors a glimpse of the past. Indeed, Baan Chinpracha Phuket stands as a glorious heritage of Phuket’s tin mining history. The attraction is unique in the fact that while the ground floor is open as a public museum, owners of the house still live upstairs.
Baan Chinpracha Phuket was built in 1903 by Prapitak Chinpracha, the son of a Chinese family who migrated to Phuket in 1854. It was part of the majestic mansions which were built at the end of the 19th century after Chinese immigrants built their fortunes in tin mining industry. Baan Chinpracha Phuket was passed down to generations and today, Khun Daeng, one of the direct descendants still lives on the second floor with her husband.
Strolling through the different rooms, family pictures lining up the walls offer the interesting stories of different family members. Each room is filled with diverse artifacts including traditional clothing, elegant furniture and ceramics. Chinese touches and culture are present all around the house, including a shrine dedicated to ancestors. Nonetheless, the highlight of Baan Chinpracha Phuket is without a doubt the inner courtyard opening to the sky. The inner pond provides light as well as ventilation drawing a comfortable breeze into the mansion during the hottest days. In the past, it was also used to collect rainwater.
Baan Chinpracha Phuket was the filming location of a few movies such as “Young Indiana Jones” and “Heaven and Earth”. Today, young engaged couples dressed in traditional clothes often come to the house to take some traditional wedding photos.

The trace of wealth in the harmonious
Sino-colonial architectural style
impresses the visitors to the old mansion
on Krabi road in Phuket City.
The mansion is known as Baan Chinpracha.
The old mansion was built in the reign of King Rama V.
The premise is currently looked after
by the heir of Phra Pitak Chinpracha,
the original owner.
The distinctive character is not only reflected
by the white building situated amidst shady trees,
but also its history.
The mansion was originally built
by a wealthy Chinese descendant,
who was born in Phuket,
to use as a bridal house (home for a newly wed couple),
but after its completion, they did not reside there,
as the mansion is far away from the market
and other families.
The house was then used for guests
and accommodation.
Above the door, is a wooden sign with Chinese letters
that reads Lean Bee meaning Lotus.
This is in commemoration of the hardship
& struggle of ancestors.
The house faces south, enabling air to flow through.
This reflects the wisdom & expertise of the architect.
A well is situated in the middle of the mansion
which also helps ventilation,
in addition to many windows.
Decoration in Baan Chinpracha today
is not much different from the original style.
Most furniture & decorative items
were imported through Penang.
In the old days, shipping trade
via Penang to Phuket was flourishing.
This included gate material from the Netherlands,
tiles from Italy
& pearl engraved wooden furniture from China.
In the middle of the premises,
a sign of ancestors illustrates the family name
of Sae Tan today known as Tantavanit.
Paintings & photos of ancestors are also shown here.
Baan Chinpracha still opened its door to welcome visitors when the 4th generation was still here.
But today the mansion is sometimes used
as a venue for Phuket Cultural activities.

Thai Hua Museum in Phuket, Thailand
Thai Hua Museum is a delightful historic attraction located on Krabi Road, in Phuket Old Town, not far from Baan Chinpracha Mansion and Soi Romanee. A renovated Sino-Portuguese building, the museum itself is historic, and its exhibits tell a fascinating story of Phuket’s heritage and of the Chinese immigrants who made the island their home and became a crucial part of its society.
There are more than 12 exhibition rooms in all, spanning both floors of this stately building, and the museum also boasts a pretty inner courtyard open to the sky; one of the most charming features of this form of architecture. You will also find a lush garden, where you can examine machinery and tools used in Phuket’s tin mining past.
The museum’s exhibits, which tell the story of Phuket’s traditions, its evolution, and its Chinese population, include some short films in both Thai and Chinese, with English subtitles for the benefit of foreign tourists. They enable you to learn about the island’s heritage from new perspectives, giving fresh insight into Phuket’s links with China and how Chinese immigrants influenced local food, architecture and customs. Story of Phuket - China Inn
Number 20 on Thalang road,
in the old Phuket Town area in the heart of the city,
is prominent for its Sino-Portuguese style
& architectural design a combination
of Eastern & Western civilization.
The house is owned by a wealthy Chinese descendant from Penang.
This shop house originally functioned
as a centre to receive or send money
from and to China.
The obvious evidence is reflected
in the sign of the restaurant.
The China Inn Café & Restaurant
was in a bad condition as it was abandoned
before it was refurbished.
A few years back, its ancient architectural value
was recognized by a lady who had seen
this lovely shop house since her childhood.
Her family decided to rent & renovate the premise and keep its original design as much as possible.
She now runs the restaurant & antique shop
following her dream.
Its my desire. When I saw it, I loved it
and dreamed to have a house like this.
One day my daughter walked passed
this shop house & saw the rental sign.
She ran back to tell me to make a bid.
My desire began to come true.
Now refurbished but skill keeping to its
old charisma, both outside & inside,
China Inn Café & Restaurant is one of
the most visited & photographed places
in the city of Phuket.
The interior has attracted
& led us into the far back of the building.
Its gradually unveiled the charm of Phuket.
If you have a half day to spare,
visiting this special restaurant is not only pure leisure,
but it also means you can turn back in time
to appreciate the local culture & feel of the
unfamiliar old times.
Entering the far back of the shop house,
we find a small garden seductively hidden.
This was a kitchen part for old Chinese
Hokkien house.
When changed to be a restaurant,
this part became a little heaven,
just steps away from the hectic world outside.
We are fond of antiques & old houses
so we tried to revive its origin.
I didnt know that the inside was a wreck
as the outside appeared to look nice
like when I saw it during my childhood.
Opening the door, I was astonished & thought what Im going to do?
I have done some modifications & adjustments
to be practical and keep to the original notion
as much as I can.
The old material?
These 3 pillars, the roof & the tiles belong to the house, but they were removed & left here
so I went through them & used some
for roofing this part & the kitchen.
The house structure, like most of the crossbeams
are original,
but the floor & wooden plates are mostly new.
The stairs use old material as I had them repaired.
Decorating it in Chinese style,
it fits the house, restaurant & the road
as we are situated in an Old Town area.
Its not only the authority or local government,
but also the private sector
have participated in the preservation.
This leads to Thais and foreigners to visit
& appreciate the charisma of the city & its local identity.
It has won the Architectural Conservation Award
from the Association of Siam Architects
under HRH Princes Maha Chakri Sirindhorns patronage.
To repair an old house is different from
having a new one built. For a new house
you can just build it and use it.
Its a lot of work for old premises.
A decayed wall needs repairs every year.
In October we usually close for one month
to do maintenance work.
An individual fascination of an old house,
become one powerful force to preserve
such precious architecture on a historical road
like Thalang Road to boost pride in Phuket residents.
