Chios Video Map:
Chios is the capital of the province and has about 25,000 inhabitants. The city is a bustling port and commercial center. In the center of town stands the Byzantine museum with a variety of historical artifacts from the island's past. Modern Chios has been built on the site of the ancient city from which there exist a few survived findings – in particular the walls and the theater. The Castle is quite impressive. Originally built by the Byzantines as a fortress, it was significantly extended by the Genovese in the 14th century.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Mesta which is a Greek traditional village in the island of Chios. It belongs to Mastic Villages a group of villages in South Chios where the main activity is the agriculture of mastic. Mesta is characterised by particular architecture since it is a village-castle with perfectly preserved medieval architecture. The village was probably built in the 12th century during Byzantine era. The architecture of settlement with the narrow streets and the perimetric fortification served to repel the pirate raids. Mesta is located 35 km south west of Chios (town), 4 km away from coast.
Icaria, also spelled Ikaria, is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, 10 nautical miles southwest of Samos. According to tradition, it derives its name from Icarus, the son of Daedalus in Greek mythology, who was believed to have fallen into the sea nearby.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

GREECE: EXPLORING the historic MEDIEVAL CASTLE, island of CHIOS (ΧΙΟΣ) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the historic Castle of Chios which is a medieval citadel in Chios town on the Greek island of Chios (ΧΙΟΣ). The castle is situated adjacent to the main port of Chios and its east side borders with the sea. It consists of an inhabited area surrounded by a large stone wall structure with various fortifications purposed to defend the enclosed population and properties against naval attack and siege.
The castle was constructed in the medieval period with its first construction phase having started in the 10th century by the Byzantines. The structures surviving to this day are part of later construction and expansion dated to the time when the Genoese, who maintained commercial concerns, ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century.

Το κάστρο της Χίου - Chios castle
©Konstantinos Mil. Anagnostou - chiosphotos.gr

Exploring Culture-Rich Chios in Greece
In this week's episode we're heading to one of the most cultural and history rich islands in Greece, the beautiful island of Chios! We check out the beautiful medieval villages of Pyrgi, Mesta and Olympoi and we check out a lovely secluded bay at Agia Dynami.
This island was such a surprise for us. From the incredible Mastic cultivation and history to the symmetrically patterned buildings, this was our biggest surprise in the country.
There weren't the breathtaking beaches of Kefalonia or the grand old town architecture of Corfu, but Chios had something special and we can't wait to return one day soon!

The mastic trees and their priceless resin, mastiha, have become the main occupation of the residents of Southern Chios for many centuries. These trees can thrive in no other part of the world, but in Southern Chios and whomever had the luck or has chosen to live next to them, could do nothing else but appreciate the nature’s generosity and take full advantage of it.
The renowned mastiha-castle villages constitute a study of the fortification architecture, which was created by Genovese after the re-occupation of the island, in the 14th century. All these are works of an admirable defensive planning and communication net since the era when Giustiniani took over the exploitation of the island and, first of all, took care of the cultivation of mastiha and its cultivators. They built castle villages, unseen and away from the sea, and they used the external walls of the houses as the fortification wall which would protect the villages; labyrinth-like villages, with houses closely built, so that the people could walk from one flat roof to the next; All the houses were around a very tall tower and neighbourhoods were created as containment zones of various invaders' advances.
Vessa is 20 kms away from the town of Chios, at the southern part of the island. It is a small village, but also a typical example of how medieval castle villages looked like. Vessa was created by the integration of three smaller settlements. It’s a semi-mountainous village, which extends in a big valley surrounded by mountains. The gate of the village is well preserved. The houses are closely built, one next to the other and there are narrow lanes. Its tall buildings remind us of towers. Although the fortification wall surrounding the village is broken in some parts, the architecture and the village’s planning have remained almost intact throughout the years, especially the corner towers of the castle and parts of its fortification wall.
Vessa is a stone-built village on its whole, with many restored houses. The architecture of its houses remains intact and worth admiring. The central tower is situated in the village’s picturesque square, almost untouched by time. The churches of the village is Panayia, Ayios Dimitrios and Panayia Petrousena, the oldest church of Chios, as the residents of the village claim. Vessa is the birth place of Konstantinos Valiadis (Konstantinos E’) Ecumenical Patriarch from 1897 until 1901.
