See the Light Part 1: A Historical Perspective
A local historical icon is being transformed into a dazzling display of color and light. Hundreds of spectators are gathering to see the light for themselves. But first, let's illuminate this event with a brief history of the Phoenix Park footbridge...
#ValleyMediaWorks #EauClaire #Community
I spoke with Carrie Ronnander, the director of the Chippewa Valley Museum, about the bridge's history:
The story of the bridge is that it's a lot older than we think. That bridge was built in 1903, but it's built with pieces of bridges brought from LaCrosse. The piers were built in 1903, and the trusses, there's 3 parts to them, they were all brought up from LaCrosse, they were all built in 1876.
You had skilled tradesmen who would've done some of the welding, the craft-type work and then there were general laborers who were doing general construction. But 33 men worked on it for about a year.
Anything that the community was needing in large quantities would come in, go out, early years it was timber in later years tires as well as farmer's produce.
In 1979 the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul line then discontinued using the line. In 1980 they tried to find another owner for the railroad, they did find one, but again they didn't really make it go. in 1981 the whole line was abandoned, at that time it was discontinued being a railroad bridge.
Over the past 36 years, the bridge has found a new purpose. Instead of trains hauling freight, there are dads pulling kids, friends carrying on conversations, and dogs walking people. The Phoenix Park footbridge has become an essential and iconic part of downtown Eau Claire. But tonight is the dawn of a new era...
Big thank you to Liz, Carrie, and Olaf at the Chippewa Valley Museum for their invaluable support in creating this video!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Eau Claire (#813)
[Original Airdate: April 4, 2019]
Eau Claire really IS the definition of renaissance. As John Gurda said, if you were familiar with this northwestern Wisconsin city 20 years ago, you’re not familiar with it now unless you live in Eau Claire!
The new Pablo Center for the Arts, lighted bridges and public art, many company headquarters and Phoenix Park have transformed downtown EC. Old foundational places that could never be replaced, like the Court’n House and the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum, retain the roots of this city. And new things in old spaces, like the Lismore and Oxbow hotels, Banbury Place in the old Uniroyal plant, and tons of renovation on the UW-EC Campus prove a commitment to reinvestment and renovation.
This is a city infused with music, youthful energy, Kubb and tons of activity, all supported by investment and commitment. Eau Claire was the perfect place to finish our eighth season!

History
Chippewa Falls was originally a lumber town that became a railroad town, even though the main railroad line of the 1870s went through Eau Claire, about 10 miles to the south. In 1870, the West Wisconsin Railway built a line from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Milwaukee through the area at Eau Claire. Following this, the Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls Railway established a line running from Eau Claire to Chippewa Falls. In 1880, the CF&W was joined by the Wisconsin and Minnesota Railway pushing its way west from Abbotsford. This was followed in 1881 by the Chippewa Falls & Northern Railroad, which built a line north from Chippewa Falls to Bloomer, eventually being extended to Superior..... A Piece of Hmong: Mai Xee Xiong Creates a Hmong New Year's Hat
The Chippewa Valley Museum worked with local Hmong textile artist Mai Xee Xiong and the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association to create a video documenting Xiong's immigration story and the process of making a traditional Hmong New Year's hat. The video is featured in CVM's new exhibit Changing Currents: Reinventing the Chippewa Valley.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Chippewa Falls (#309)
[Latest Airdate: July 6, 2017]
[Original Airdate: March 6, 2014]
Chippewa Falls' roots are literally roots -- of the white pines that fed the world's largest lumber mill and put Chippewa Falls on the map. Well, the lumberjacks may be gone, but John learned very quickly that the hard working, harder playing character of Chippewa Falls is still alive and well. Know what else he learned? Leinenkugel's started here in 1867 to serve the thirsty lumberjacks. The supercomputer was invented here by Seymour Cray. The largest dog park and the second oldest zoo in Wisconsin both call this city home. And the Yellowstone Trail runs right through Chippewa Falls. Right? John was impressed, too.
But as you probably know by now, John isn't most impressed by just the facts. It's the residents that put the smile on his face - and the knowledge that he didn't have to have a membership to get into the local supper club! As this episode shows, Chippewa Falls is not for members only -- it's for everybody!
