Jbeil Byblos Old Harbor-Dedicated to all Sailors & Fishermen
Dedicated to all Sailors & Fishermen in Jbeil Byblos. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Harbor & Harbor Towers:
At the base of the historic quarter is the harbor of Byblos. This harbor was probably used for fishing and not for trade by the Phoenicians. The bottom of the current harbor is not deep enough to be able to receive the large ships used for the Phoenicians' active maritime trade. Archaeologists are still searching for the location of the ancient Phoenician harbor.
The Crusaders built defensive towers on either side of the mouth of the port, and a chain could be raised between the two towers to prevent boats from entering. The northern tower was restored during the Mamluke and Ottoman eras and is still in fairly good condition. Climb to the top of the tower and look down into the water to see the remains of the ancient quays. You can take a boat ride in the harbor during spring summer, and fall.
Around 3000 BC, Byblos Port was the most important timber shipping center in the eastern Mediterranean. It was used by the Phoenicians to ship Cedars of Lebanon and other wood to the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt to be used in tomb construction and shipbuilding. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The most picturesque part of town, the tranquil harbor of Jbeil (Byblos) is nowadays mainly a fishing port.
These lazy wooden boats rest by the calm quays that were once the ancient world's most vibrant entrepôt, where not only valuable merchandise was exchanged, but also knowledge and ideas. It is from this harbor that a Phoenician invention, the linear alphabet, was exported to the rest of the world. The significance of the port rose and fell in history depending on prevailing powers.
In mediaeval times, when Byblos became one of the bases for Crusaders, the town known to them as Gibelet regained importance, which led to the construction of a protective wall that wrapped around the town and its port. Two fortified towers flanked at the entrance of the port and a heavy iron chain prevented unwanted ships from entering the harbor.
Only the northern tower has survived. Nowadays, local families and visitors flood the charming area around the port for a stroll and a drink or a meal at one of many popular open-air cafés and seafood restaurants, a nice way to end a day trip to Byblos. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pics & vid Source: -Ramy Saliba Photography -Francois El Bacha -Jean Salameh Photography -Rabea Khalife -Byblos Sur Mer -Fadi Chahine -Wael Hamzeh -Carole Bassil -Lebanon Page -Objectivized -Charbel Fersan -Chris Khalife -Lola Awada
