Day Tripping to Chiricahua National Monument in Arizona
See full blog post -
In this video, I take you along on our day trip to the Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona.
We leave a free dry camping spot in the Willcox Playa Wildlife Area and take the RV to Sage Brush RV Park in Willcox. Then head down Highway 186 to Chiricahua.
The video contains highlights of our drive and a bunch of still photos I captured. Also, we drive through the only campground in the park to show how tight it is and two sharp dips that eliminate camping by RVS over 29 feet long.
It's an amazing park full of great hikes and epic scenery. Two thumbs up!
Finally, in the end, we get out of the truck in the middle of some ranch land along 186 to give you a look at a great sunset scene.

Chiricahua National Monument
Chiricahua National Monument south east of Tucson is an imposing landscape that encompasses nearly 12,000 acres and is home to various natural and historical attractions. Staff members, visitors and others including William Ascarza say the area is worth visiting because of its many attributes. Ascarza is the author of “Chiricahua Mountains – History and Nature” which was published in 2014. The monument is described as a “Wonderland of Rocks” and includes an 8-mile scenic drive as well as historical buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and early residents.

Chiricahua National Monument & Fort Bowie, Arizona
02-16-2015 Produced by Erick F Dircks
Chiricahua National Monument AZ. Arriving at the Chiricahua Visitor Center, we were greeted by several friendly, and helpful women running the center. They told us about several beautiful spots, marked them on our map, and out the door we went to explore the park. We didn't have to drive far before eye candy was everywhere. Stopping to take a few photos, a couple of blue feathered birds decided to pose for me. I got within three feet of the male, and Randy started calling to it. To our surprise, it was entertaining him, and couldn't take enough photos of him. About halfway through the park, Randy noticed the gas gauge sitting on a quarter of gas. Somehow we managed to finish what we set out to do in Chiricahua, and still managed to see Fort Bowie. That was an experience in and of it's self. We did manage to see the Fort through a pipe embedded in a post, but being short on gas, opted not to take the 2 mile trek to it, getting gas was more important.

ABOUT:
Known as the “Wonderland of Rocks,” Chiricahua National Monument offers wonderful hiking opportunities and a wonderful 8 mile drive. One of my favorite all time hikes, it is not your typical sky island hike. Not by a long shot. This small section of the Chiricahuas is notable for its abundance of hoodoos. These natural wonders were formed by a volcano some 27 million years ago when eruptions melted together ash particles into layers of grey rock called rhyolite. Over the years, movement, cracking, weathering and erosion worked up cracks, which let the weaker material wash away and leave us the gifts of the Monument...the hoodoos. An added bonus is the Faraway Ranch located within the park. That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

Visit to the Chiricahua Mountains, Southeast Arizona (Part 3)
This is the third part of the video of my visit to the Chiricahua Mountains (07/19/09). Near the end of this video on my way back hone, I came across a mountain with a very odd shaped peak that looked like a giant knife sharpener.
Hiking to Inspiration Point at Chiricahua National Monument (#7/419)
Named after the band of Native American Indians, Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona may not have made your shortlist of must-visit National Park Units. But after spending several days exploring it in December, we think this is a hidden gem of the National Park System.
In this video, we take the hiker's shuttle to Echo Canyon and then hike back down to the Visitor Center. The Big Loop hike consisted of the following trails: Echo Canyon Trail, Hailstone Trail, Mushroom Rock Trail, Inspiration Point, Big Balanced Rock Trail, Heart of Rocks Loop, Sarah Demming Trail, Lower Rhyolite Canyon Trail.
In total it was 9.88 miles (15.9km) with 1286 ft (392 meters) of elevation gain.
We stayed at the Bonita Canyon Campground inside the Chiricahua National Monument.
We also find our first Inspiratoin Point on this journey and decide to count them all.
We are Matt & Diana and we live in an RV full time and are on a journey to visit all 400+ National Park Units. To follow us along subscribe to our channel here
Chiricahua National Monument was unit #7 out of #419 on our journey to visit them all. See a detailed write up here:

This video is my experience at Chiricahua National Monument in Arizona. I recommend watching it on a big screen TV or at least a screen laptop size or larger. I hiked 2 different hikes for a little over 5 miles.
This was my last day in Arizona and I'm glad I went to this park. It reminded me of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, but the rocks were a different color.
I really liked Chiricahua because of the unique rock formations. Some were almost symmetrical in shape and size.
It was well worth going to this park. The girl who gave me my hiking for health pin was very nice. It was a very good experience.

Walt Disney called them Fairy Chimneys and sent his Imagineers to this place to dream - to bring back ideas from a Land Beyond Beyond......I call them Earth Pyramids...quiet and in tune with a calming energy of the ages...come take a walk into Echo Canyon in the Chiricahua National Monument in Arizona...the ancient stone hoodoos are truly totem poles of rock and a walk from the windy rim to the magical bottom of the canyon is unforgettable...
