Chisholm Trail Winery -- Fredericksburg, Texas
Heading west on U.S Highway 290, one will notice many wineries on your way out to Fredericksburg. But don't stop there, keep on going! Because located in a small valley a few miles west of Fredericksburg is a winery with wines worth the company of some wood fired pizza. There is a healthy mix of white and reds, and a few sweeter dessert style wines on the tasting menu. While here, you also should check out their new wood fired pizzas as they make a great addition to your wine. Here, you'll find a winery with a western theme and wines that reflect the western culture of this area; Diablo, Lone Wolf, Silver Spur, just to name a few. No need to look at your watch when out here. It's easy to get caught up in the laid back setting of the Corral watching longhorn cattle grazing and listening to the winds of the Hill County making their own country-style music.

Lost Draw Cellars – Fredericksburg, Texas
Located in the Texas High Plains, Lost Draw Vineyards has done their best at contributing to the Texas wine industry by producing some great grapes. Many Texas winemakers can thank Lost Draw Vineyards for producing some top quality grapes for any number of wines produced by state wineries. Wine lovers know full well that good wine starts with good grapes….no ifs, ands or buts. In Fredericksburg, you can now find their tasting room, Lost Draw Cellars - a collaboration of partners Troy Ottmers, Andrew Sides, and Andy Timmons. Kim McPherson is also helping out with their initial wine making. At the Fredericksburg tasting room (opened last Nov 21st) you’ll be able to taste many of their quality wines. The late freeze of 2013 was a detriment to many Texas high plains vineyards. As a result, not all 2013 Texas vintages will be sourced from Texas grapes as wineries supplemented much of their grapes from New Mexico, California, and Washington. Lost Draw Vineyards has since installed a wind machine to help combat late freezes and proved its worth during an April 2014 freeze. Currently, there are eight wines for tasting. For whites, start with the 2013 Arroyo Blanco. It’s a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Roussanne that has good character and quite smooth. Next, try the Gemutlichkeit. It's blended with Grenache Blanc, Viognier, and Roussanne that comes across as crisp and dry. The other white is a Gewürztraminer. It’s a really good one to sip and swirl on a lazy afternoon. End off the white list with their very nice and refreshing French Colombard. Now on to the reds! The Arroyo Rojo is a Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan blend with a touch of Viognier. It's a good enjoyable mellow red wine. Their Tempranillo is a great one that lives up to the Texas reputation as Tempranillo country. It has good aroma, color, and quite fruit forward. Lastly, you’ll savor the Sangiovese red wine. This one is the star of the show! Made from 40 year old vines (yes 40 year old Texas vines), it just has that quality taste and finish you’d expect from old world wines. Sadly, we heard that Lost Draw will be pulling up these old vines, so this is likely one of the last vintages for their old Sangiovese grape vines. The Arroyo Blush is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Cinsault that is a bit sweet and refreshing when chilled with some tangerine like notes. It’s always great to visit a winery when they first open. The staff here are warm and welcoming and will treat you wonderfully. Troy can be found at the tasting room and is a good friendly guy to chat with, too. So come check them out when you’re in town and enjoy Fredericksburg's newest winery and tasting room as we don't think you'll be disappointed!

Fat Ass Ranch and Winery - Fredericksburg, Texas
Having Just opened last Memorial Day weekend, the newest winery on the Texas Hill Country Winery Trail, HWY 290, is not only an eye catcher with its name, but also a cool place to just hang out and shoot the breeze with some good wine. Owners Gail and Jennie McCulloch have put their own unique Texas style stamp on the decor with a moonshine still out front, installed silo style restrooms, used pickup tailgates to fashion benches and parked a replica of the General Lee hot rod out front. Both the inside and the back patio have ample room for seating and sipping. They use all Texas grapes for their wines. The folks at Texas Custom Wine Works are assisting with the wine making. There are currently four wines to try. The whites are all made in stainless steel. Both dry and sweet ones are made from the same blend: Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay. If you're a crisp white wine drinker, then the first dry white you'll like. The same goes for the dry and sweet red, they have the same blend of grapes with different sweetness: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc. The sweet red has a very nice jammy taste to it. We were told that peach and watermelon wines are on the way soon. Future plans are to have a vineyard on site. Besides the wine, they have a number of cool items in the shop for sale made by Jennie and friends. Do check out the bug guards for your wine glass with some clever and catchy verses. It's worth the stop, even if it is just to say you've been to the Fat Ass Winery down the road!

Chisholm Trail Ride
A small team of photographers/filmmakers and cowboys will travel by horseback up the Chisholm Trail from San Antonio to Nocona, Texas, installing missing historical markers, hoping to influence it's induction as a National Historic Trail, and documenting the rich history for a feature length or episodic documentary.
The Chisholm Trail Ride is a project created in collaboration with several branches of the Texas Historical Commission's Heritage Trails Program to help generate interest in the important history of the Chisholm Trail. With a small team of photographers/filmmakers and cowboys, the plan is to ride the nearly 400 miles from San Antonio to Nocona, documenting the rich history along the way. Through the producing of a documentary film, and by utilizing publications and social media, our aim is to not only educate future generations about the importance of this trail to Texas and US history, but to also influence the passing of a bill in Congress that would get the Chisholm Trail inducted as a National Historic Trail. By organizing events in key cities, we hope to generate public interest in the project, and gain individual sponsorships for the remaining historical markers, so that this important trail can be completed.

Santamaria Cellars - Fredericksburg, Texas
Founded in 2006 by Martin and Angela SantaMaria, Martin has been producing some mighty fine red wines. Born in Argentina and educated in Italy on winemaking, Martin has taken the best of both winemaking worlds and brought them to Central Texas. You old timer Central Texas wine trail folks may also remember him as the wine maker at Dry Comal Creek. Many regular Texas wine lovers have been to the local downtown Fredericksburg wine & beer shop (Texas Wine Cellars) where folks were able to sample his wines, as well. We were fortunate to have picked up a few of his first releases during those early days. The tasting room has been opened less than a year down on Texas Highway 16 just south of Fredericksburg. Though somewhat small, it packs a good variety of wines to choose from for sampling. You'll have at least seven different wines to taste from that include both whites and reds. All wines are produced from 100% Texas grapes (Hill Country and Lubbock areas). The Muscat Canelli and Pinot Grigio are great! Red wine lovers will relish the deep bold flavors of the reds offered. The Pinot Noir has to be one of the best you'll try this side of the Colorado River! Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec are all very fine. There are a few 2011 reds that are already released. The 2011s have turned out so well that you'll definitely want to stock up a few to store in your cellar. Santamaria Cellars in one of those wineries in Texas that helps put the Q in quality and does the state justice in representing Texas wines well. There is something on the menu to please any palette so stop by and check out one of the state's newer wineries and enjoy!
