The Story of Roopmati and Baz Bahadur ...
Like Romeo & Juliet , Shirin Farhad & Laila-Majnu, the story of Roopmati and Baz Bahadur is one of those grand romantic sagas of history, filled with beauty and emotion, yet ending with tragedy, loss and separation.....
Baz Bahadur was the last Sultan of the state of Malwa. He ruled from 1555 to 1562. One day while out hunting, Sultan Baz Bahadur spotted a Hindu girl, Roopmati, singing as she bathed in the Narmada river. Bewitched by her beauty and her voice, Baz Bahadur persuaded her to live with him in Mandu, the capital of Malwa.
Thereafter, he spent his time in the pursuit of love and music, leaving his kingdom vulnerable to attack. In 1561, Akbar's army led by Adam Khan and Pir Muhammad Khan attacked Malwa and defeated Baz Bahadur in the battle of Sarangpur on 29 March, 1561. One of the reasons for Adam Khan's attack seems to be his love for Rani Roopmati. Even as the Mughal general waited outside her room to claim her, she committed suicide by swallowing poison...
Baz Bahadur fled to Khandesh. Akbar, soon recalled Adham Khan and made over command to Pir Muhammad. Pir Muhammad attacked Khandesh and proceeded up to Burhanpur but he was defeated by a coalition of three powers: Miran Mubarak Shah II of Khandesh, Tufal Khan of Berar and Baz Bahadur. Pir Muhammad died while retreating. The confederate army pursued the Mughals and drove them out of Malwa. Baz Bahadur regained his kingdom for a short period. In 1562, Akbar sent another army led by Abdullah Khan, the Uzbeg, which finally defeated Baz Bahadur. He fled to Chittor. Baz Bahadur remained a fugutive at a number of courts till he surrenedered in November, 1570 to Akbar at Nagaur. He joined Akbar's service.
The Poems Of Rani Roopmati & Baaz Bahadur ...
In 1599, Ahmad-ul-Umri Turkoman, who was in the service of Sharaf-ud-Din Mirza wrote the story of Rani Roopmati in Persian. He collected 26 poems about her and included them in his work. The original manuscript passed to his grandson Fulad Khan and his friend Mir Jafar Ali made a copy of the manuscript in 1653. This copy passed through several hands before it reached a gentleman named C.E. Luard. In 1926 it was translated into English by L.M. Crump under the title, The Lady of the Lotus: Rupmati, Queen of Mandu, A Strange Tale of Faithfulness. This version features a collection of twelve dohas, ten kavitas and three sawaiyas of Roopmati.
In 1957, the story was adapted into a Hindi movie directed by S.N.Tripathi. It was titled Rani Roopmati and it contained some exceptional songs such as Laut ke Aaja Mere Meet by Lata Mangeshkar.

Bio: In this time of religious extremism, there are still those who are carrying the flame of religious tolerance, devotion and mysticism- and the Sufi’s are some of the most ancient.
Fanna-Fi-Allah carries the tradition and teachings of the Sufi’s in their music, the devotionally driven and passionate music of Qawwali. Through many years of study and practice under the guidance of Qawwali masters of India and Pakistan, their expression of Qawwali music has become an authentic representation and continuation of this ancient tradition of Sufi music.
Sufism is alive and well in India and Pakistan, where Qawwali music celebrates the great Sufi mystics of old, and relishes in the love of the Divine through poetry. Sung with a powerful and soaring melodious chorus and accompanied by entrancing energetic rhythms of tabla and group clapping, the Beloved is celebrated with ecstatic devotion.
Fanna-Fi-Allah gives audiences a glimpse inside this rich and vibrant Sufi culture, to which many would otherwise never experience. The groups founding members have spent over 20 years learning this classical art-form. During their 15 years of world-wide touring they have played at many major international festivals. They have enthralled audiences in the USA, Pakistan, Europe, Indonesia, India, Egypt, and others, with their dynamic skill, and passionate musical precision. With ten albums already published, Fanna-Fi-Allah have now given us an even greater glimpse into this Sufi world of Pakistan with the production of their new documentary: Music of the Mystics.
Fanna-Fi-Allah continues to carry on an ancient wisdom in their music, a wisdom that is not only heard, but is profoundly felt. A universal message of devotion and tolerance that ignites hearts and quenches their deeper longings. A message that is so crucial for our time.
Buland Darwaza illuminated during the Urs in Ajmer
Sultan Ghiyasuddin Khilji (1469-1500) himself was a devotee of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin and it was almost certainly he who funded the construction of the Buland Darwaza, one of the ceremonial gates of the dargah, and so-called because of its great height. The Buland Darwaza is sometimes attributed to Sultan Alauddin Khilji, some refer today to it as the ‘Ala I Darwaza ‘ but this is unlikely, and is no doubt the result of a confusion between the Khiljis of Malwa and Mandu, and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi (1298-1316). Before the commencement of Urs Sharif a flag is hoisted on top of this gate with grand ceremony on the 25th Jamadiulsaani for ushering the ‘Urs’ of Khwaja Saheb, which starts from 1st of Rajab(The 7th month of lunar Calendar).
The Buland Darwaza, can, therefore, more acceptably be attributed to Ghiyas al-din Khilji. It was not only Akbar and the Khilji Sultans who adorned Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty ‘s tomb. By the early seventeenth century the dargah was clearly an impressive establishment with a considerable staff financed by the endowments and offerings of devotees. There was already accommodation for the staff, facilities for the pilgrims’ ritual ablutions, a monumental gateway (the Buland Darwaza), at the entrance of the shrine, and a lavishly decorated mausoleum for the saint.
