129: Cider Dinner w/Carlo Hein | Ramborn Cider Co, Luxembourg
Carlo Hein has always loved cider. That cider love and perhaps his work in renovation and sustainable energy spurred him and his friends to start a cidery. Upon noticing the fallen fruit and neglected apples trees in his area of Luxembourg. He realized, “We need to save these orchards”
And so he did. Ramborn Cider Co began selling cider in 2015 and is Luxembourg's only cidery.
To make cider he first called Peter Mitchell, who is renown worldwide for his classes on cidermaking. Carlo asked Peter if he would help Ramborn. Peter replied that first you must take my course and then we will discuss making cider for Ramborn.
Today Peter Mitchel still consults to Ramborn Cider, which undeniably lends a good amount of UK profile to each of the ciders.
What is the traditional word for cider in Luxembourg? Viez Where did the name of the cidery come from? Rambo is an apple known in France and Sweden and in Luxembourg. Like so many wonderful cider blends, Ramborn Cider Company is part Rambo apple and the town “Born”. Upon further research Carlo found that David Morrel the author of the book “First Blood” which inspired the movie Rambo was looking for a name for the main character protrayed by Slyvester Stallone in the movie. Morrel's wife came in from the market and said why not use an apple name! The rest is history and all this goes to show you that once again the apple provides the bases for so many good stories throughout history.
With Ramborn being the only cidery in the country the support is massive from both the locals and the government.
Visting Ramborn The 1781 barn at Ramborn is original. The architecture is based upon the style that is classically Marie Thersea of Austria, the country that once ruled this area. There is a center square courtyard and the barn that housed a cidery and distillery has been turned into a cinema. Taking a Tour of Ramborn The tour is 1 1/2 hours long and includes a movie that you can hear a short clip of in this podcast. The movie does play in different languages. The tour brings you through the production area and the farm. Ramborn Cider can accommodate up to 140 people per time. There is also a walking tour through the time. There is no tasting room, but upon request there is a dinning area that can be reserved for group dinners. Trams in Brussels
The Brussels tram (or streetcar) system is a transport system in Brussels, Belgium. It is the 16th largest tram system in the world by route length, and in 2012 carried some 123.5 million passengers. In 2016, the Brussels tram system consists of 17 tram lines (three of which – lines 3, 4 and 7 – qualify as premetro lines). As of 2011, the tram system's total route length was 138.9 km (86.3 mi), making it one of the larger tram networks in Europe. Its development has demonstrated many of the quandaries that face local public transport planners. The Brussels tram system also has a number of interesting peculiarities.
History
The first horse-drawn trams were introduced in Brussels in 1869, running from the Porte de Namur to the Bois de la Cambre. The first electric tramway came to Brussels in 1894.
High-floor and low-floor trams
The development of the system is being pulled in two contradictory directions – towards low-floor street-running trams and high-floor underground railway. This has led to some conflicting decisions. The standard trams — still PCCs from the 1950s and 60s — have been followed by the specially designed T2000 low-floor model and, at the end of 2005, by a variant of the off-the-shelf Flexity Outlook from Bombardier (3000 series), and, at the end of 2006, by an even longer version of the same family (4000 series).
On some of the busiest routes, the convenience of the low floor is lost because of the anomalies caused by the hesitant upgrade of tram to metro. The city has four heavy metro lines and three stretches of premetro or underground tram. The premetro tunnels have been built to allow for eventual upgrade to heavy metro, so most of the platform is high, and is connected to the street (at least in the upward direction) by escalator. At some stations lifts have been installed, but there is a cutout section taking the level down to one foot above ground to board the trams. The three steps this entails make life difficult for passengers with baby buggies or suitcases, even though the new low-floor trams are accessible to wheel-chair users. To get around this last barrier to mobility, an experimental ramp was installed in 2009 at Parvis de St-Gilles/St-Gillis Voorplein.
Livery
Brussels trams have known several liveries. In the beginning of the 20th century, those operated by the Tramways Bruxellois were dark green, by the Chemins de Fer Economiques chocolate. The two companies merged in the 1920s, whereupon a standard livery of primrose yellow was adopted which lasted (with some minor changes in the trimmings) until the mid-1990s when a brighter shade of yellow was adopted.
A profound change in livery came in 2006 with the adoption of the so-called art nouveau livery of silver and light brown on the new 3000 and 4000 vehicles. The rest of the active fleet has been repainted.
Heritage trams
The system exists in happy symbiosis with an active heritage operation based at Woluwe depot, and privately hired trams have free access to the tracks. Trams that still collect their current through trolley poles rather than pantographs are normally restricted to the scenic line from Cinquantenaire park via Woluwe to Tervuren, which is run with the help of volunteers from the preservation society MTUB (Museum of Brussels Urban Transport), whose board has a strong representation from STIB/MIVB. This runs at weekends from April to October; occasionally, such as on the Belgian national holiday, 21st July, these trams appear in the city centre, where the line in the Koningsstraat/Rue Royale is trolleypole-enabled.
Several trams have been sent to the United States. Tram 7037 is in San Francisco operating on line F, surreally repainted in the blue-and-white livery of Zürich. Tram 1504 is at the Trolley Museum of New York and 1511 is at Old Pueblo Trolley. An 4-axle PCC is also awaiting restoration at the Ontario St shed of Vancouver's Downtown Historic Railway.
Special-purpose trams
One PCC tram has been converted into a mobile restaurant, which operates six evening per week.
A second PCC tram serves as a mobile studio for the Le Tram television programme broadcast by Télé Bruxelles every other Sunday, during an interview is conducted while the tram tours Brussels. The tram tows a generator trailer.

The Town In Two Countries
If you want to visit the town of Baarle, head on over to northern Belgium … or the southern tip of the Netherlands. The town straddles an international border, with half of it belonging to the Dutch and the other half to the Belgians. With dozens of border crossings throughout town, many houses, shops and even roads are split in two. And with two countries comes two sets everything—two mayors, two flags, two council and even two sets of laws. This can make things tricky, but Baarle is setting an example of how two societies can come together and live harmoniously … even in the weirdest of circumstances.

Happy April Fools Day
Despite the busy season for all Big4 firms within the country, KPMG decided to take advantage of April Fools’ Day to put a smile on the faces of the Luxembourg financial market.
Just days before the 1 April, the Marketing, Innovation and Communication team gathered together for a brainstorming with the idea of a simple but fun prank to lighten the busy season. Loads of ideas were thrown about decide on one good news story for that special day.
Once the idea was found, a press release was written, mock-ups created and the fun began. All done in top secret…..on the day itself, with the kind cooperation of some media outlets, we released our story to Luxembourg….and the outcome was….

Why is the Netherlands a kingdom?
At the end of the 16th century, The Netherlands are a republic, made up of seven independent provinces. They appoint a governor, a kind of president who also becomes the Prince of Orange. The appointment passes from father to son and over time the position of Orange's governor grows ever more powerful. But he still isn't king! (grrrr!)
When the French overrun The Netherlands in 1795, the last town governor is run out of town. William the 5th flees to England (toodeloo!) and Napoleon takes over. (Bonjour!)
Bonnie boy crowns his own brother King of Holland, a title the dear man himself can't even pronounce. And in the same move, Napoleon introduces the constitutional monarchy, which means the king is not all powerful but occasionally has to listen to Parliament.
Eventually, the French are sent packing and the son of the last governor is invited back to clear up the mess. In 1813 Prince Frederic of Orange arrives in Scheveningen. He has a few years as 'Sovereign Monarch', until in 1815 Belgium is united with The Netherlands and he is promoted to King. And as of that day, the job passes from father to son to son to daughter to daughter to daughter to son (and daughter).
