Tso Lhamo lake or Chho Lhamo or Cholamu lake or Cholamoo lake is one of the highest lakes in the world, located at an altitude of 5,330 m. It is situated in North Sikkim, India, only some 4 kilometres southwest of the Chinese border.
Gurudongmar Lake, is one of the highest lakes in the world, located at an altitude of 17,800 ft in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is a lake which is considered sacred by both Buddhists and Sikhs.
The ride to Cholamu and Gurudongmar lake was done by me on my All india ride 29 states + Bhutan and Mayanmar.
Both the Cholamu and Gurudongmar lake visit was really mesmerising.

14th highest lake in the world and the highest lake in India, the Cholamu Lake in North Sikkim is situated at an altitude of 18000 feet from the sea level. While coming down the slope around 300 feet from Donkiala pass ( 18300 feet ), you can get the first sight of this moderately sized, almost frozen lake. Cholamu Lake is only a few km away from the Tibet border and is off limits for commonplace tourists. One needs special permits, from Army and Sikkim police/administration to visit the Cholamu Lake.
Also, know as Tso Lhamo lake, it is difficult to get permission to visit this lake and it is advisable not to visit this place in monsoons or winters. If you are on a family trip avoid visiting Cholamu Lake and visit the Gurudongmar Lake instead. However, if weather permits, and you get a permit easily then opt for Cholamu Lake. Since mostly no travel agencies risk their vehicles and driver in this risky terrain you can trek up to this stunning lake. The world does not have too many such places with more sublime associations than this calm sheet of water, 17,000 feet above the sea, with the shadows of mountains 22,000 to 24,000 feet high, resting on its surface.

Gurudongmar Lake better than Changu Lake in Sikkim Tourism, Gangtok Tourism - Incredible India
Have you been to Gurudongmar Lake? Altitude 5318 m or 17,800 ft. -10 degree temperature. It is one of the highest lake in the world and second highest lake in India after Tso Lhamo lake (Chho Lhamo or Cholamu lake or Cholamoo lake). We have been there on 29th April 2015 and experienced heavy snowfall for 30 minutes. Ice was everywhere and the roads were extreme. If you want to experience something life-time and out of the world then be there.
It comes under Sikkim tourism. This is a package tour. Tou can hire private vehicles or can avail shared one to reach to Lachen. You will stay at Lachen and on next morning (4 am) you will head towards this dangerous yet beautiful lake.
Wear heavy winter garments carry necessary medicines and if you have any sort of breathing problems or cardiac problems then please consult with your doctor first before travelling to Gurudogmar lake.

Hey Guys
This was day-4 of our journey, we have faced lots of problem on that day as my bike was performing so well due to high altitude area. It almost take 6 hours to reach gurudongmar lake which was only 66 km from our hotel(Lachen). But happiness was to see the most beautiful lake of North Sikkim. I have never seen before in my life.

After riding our motorcycles through snow and ice for 30 kms, we reached late at the gate at the last Army camp and were not allowed to continue riding to the Gurudongmar and Tso Lhamo lakes. But thanks to my friends in the Indian Army, we were able to get an Army jeep to escort us to the lakes. This is a day we will remember for the rest of our lives. What an experience. Life is made up of moments like these.
