CHOLITA WRESTLING?! La Paz, Bolivia
Cholitas are the cute little local ladies in La Paz, Bolivia who wear round hats and big poofy skirts. You normally see them selling produce at the local market, but we got to see a whole new side of them at a Cholita Wrestling Match. They fight each other WWE style, and it is very entertaining!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started traveling full-time January 10, 2016. While daily vlogging was not the original plan, we were having way too many cool experiences not to share every single day! Now travel vlogging is our full-time gig and we feel like we have the greatest job in the world! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
We’ve pulled inspiration from several of our favorite travel vloggers on YouTube, such as: +CaseyNeistat +FunForLouis +Jon Olsson +Mr Ben Brown , and any other talented travel vloggers that YouTube’s algorithm will hopefully connect us with ;)

Cholitas Wrestling La Paz, Bolivia
Cholitas Wrestling - Bolivia La Paz (El Alto)
Bolivia’s indigenous women wear full skirts and fringed shawls with their endless black hair in braids. Perhaps the most recognizable part of their look is bowler hats left over from Spanish colonialism; the bowler hats can be spotted in a seemingly endless range of styles and colors walking through the streets of La Paz. Unlike many types of traditional dress, the Cholita’s costume is not for tourist show. Instead is an act of habit, reflective of Aymara and Quechua tradition that lives on. And trust me when I say it hasn’t always been easy to be a Cholita.
Cholita’s used to be considered part of Bolivia’s lower echelon. Barred from certain neighborhoods, they were alienated much like they would be in a caste system. It wasn’t until 2006 when Bolivia elected Evo Morales – the country’s first indigenous president – that indigenous people were afforded the same civil rights as the rest of the country. Since then, the Bolivian Cholos y Cholitas are making a comeback in a major way.
Cholitas are breaking into new realms. Rather than confining themselves to vending fruit on the roadside, they are working as lawyers, doctors, and even professional wrestlers. Every Thursday and Sunday in El Alto, La Paz, the Fighting Cholitas hop in the wrestling ring to take each other down, lucha libre style. It’s a weird new wave of indigenous pride and feminism, and you can watch.
Throughout the 2 hour show, the Cholitas pull braids, give chokeholds, and make some [very theatrical] leaps from the ropes. Of course, the match is more WWE than street fighting (ie. super fake), but that just adds to the entertainment. Grab your seat next to the ring with a bottle of Coca-Cola and a bag of popcorn, and cheer on the Cholitas as they sashay their way into the ring. Hoot and holler as they pin and tag-team one another.
You don’t have to be into wrestling (do people really still watch WWE?) to enjoy a good round of Cholitas Wrestling in La Paz. In fact, it’s one of the most fun things to do in Bolivia.

Cholitas Wrestling - Lucha libre femenina en Bolivia (COMPLETA)
At the end of July I traveled to La Paz, Bolivia, to climb a few mountains. The city of La Paz is at 3700 meters above sea level. So I decided to spend 4 days acclimatizing before I left to the mountains. During those days I roamed around the city, and did the must-see cultural highlights. But CHOLITAS WRESTLING was an unexpected underground jewel of bizarre local culture that I couldn't miss. It's a mix in between American free catch wrestling and the traditional Mexican wrestling.
La Paz is an amazing amazing city, crowded with travelers from all over the world., and kind and peaceful locals. There's a lot to see and visit in Bolivia. I'm already planning to return here next year!
Firewater and Female Wrestlers in Bolivia
In this episode we join Jordan in La Paz, Bolivia, meeting a pair of female wrestlers (Cholitas) who like to beat each other up for the fun of it. He's also introduced to the world's strongest alcohol, the 96% Caiman liquor - or 'firewater' as it's known to the locals. After the big grudge match Jordan attempts to make a drinkable cocktail out of the potent brew, hoping it'll restore some peace between the fiery combatants in the process.

Bolivia - Wrestling Women - Cholitas, La Paz
The Wrestling Women of Bolivia belong to a long tradition. Even for travellers scarce on time it is possible to organise a tour at destination. Not without a smile and a hint of sacarsm you will follow the spectacle for young and old. They will drive you up to El Alto, the vibrant suburb in 4,000metres altitude. The show is more entertaining than serious from my perspective. You will realise that when they jump, smash their plastic table around or fight just to entertain the crowd. You should not miss it though, because you will sit together with the locals. At least this is a privilege for us travellers in my eyes.
