Jeonju - 16th largest city in South Korea | Cinematic Arial View | 전주, 대한민국 2019 【4K】
Drone Flight in Jeonju:
Jeonju is the 16th largest city in South Korea and the capital of North Jeolla Province. It is both urban and rural due to the closeness of Wanju County which almost entirely surrounds Jeonju (Wanju County has many residents who work in Jeonju). The name Jeonju literally means Perfect Region. It is an important tourist center famous for Korean food, historic buildings, sports activities, and innovative festivals.
In May 2012, Jeonju was chosen as a Creative Cities for Gastronomy as part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. This honour recognizes the city's traditional home cooking handed down over thousands of years, its active public and private food research, a system of nurturing talented chefs, and its hosting of distinctive food festivals.
HISTORY:
In the fertile Honam plain, famous for Jeonju Hanok Village and exceptional produce, Jeonju has been an important regional center in the province for centuries. The city was the capital of Hubaekje Kingdom, which was founded by Gyeon Hwon. Under Hubaekje, it was known as Wansanju. It was regarded as the spiritual capital of the Joseon Dynasty because the Yi royal family originated there. The town was occupied by the Donghak peasants' movement in 1894.[2] Jeonju was given metropolitan status in 1935, and the city was founded in 1949.
Since the Joseon Dynasty period, it was a metropolis, but it did not experience industrialization in the 20th century compared to other parts of Korea. It does not have the industrial infrastructure, manufacturing, or heavy industries found in other Korean major cities. Today, traditional touring and sight seeing is a major industry in the city.
CULTURE:
Jeonju bibimbap 전주비빔밥, a traditional local food, is well known across South Korea. There are several very popular vegetarian restaurants serving Jeonju style food and pine wine.[4]
The National Jeonju Museum exhibits ancient relics from the Baekje days.
There are extensive royal museums, temples, a castle fortress on a hillside, and a well-known paper museum, as well as an annual paper fashion show highlighting the latest styles and traditional Korean clothing made of paper.
The Jeonju Hanok Village (Hanok Maeul) is a traditional-style village in the heart of Jeonju, housing over 800 traditional hanok style buildings. It contains many traditional tea shops, souvenir shops, and restaurants.
Jeongdong Catholic Church was built 1908–1914 by French priest Xavier Baudonet on the site of the Korean Catholic martyrs in 1791 and 1801. This Byzantine and Romanesque church has been designated Korea National Treasure No. 288.
The Jeonju International Sori Festival was among Songlines' 25 Best International Festivals in 2014.
The Jeonju International Film Festival draws about 50,000 visitors annually.
The local mountains and parks are popular for outdoor recreation due to its rural location. There are historical sites in the area. The city has a zoo, a park, and the Hanguk Sound and Culture Hall, a large, modern concert complex on the Chonbuk National University campus.
TRANSPORTATIONS:
Many city buses and taxis are available in Jeonju. However, tourists are often advised to walk between points of interest, as many attractions are near each other.
ATTRACTIONS:
Jeonju International Film Festival usually runs from the end of April to May for one week annually.
SPORTS:
Jeonju hosts K League team Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC. The team's home ground is the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Hubaekje (Later Baekje) Kingdom
Hubaekje Kingdom
-------------------------------
Hubaekje, or Later Baekje, was one of the Later Three Kingdoms of Korea, along with Hugoguryeo (Taebong) and Silla. It was officially founded by the disaffected Silla general Gyeon Hwon in 900, and fell to Wanggeon's Goryeo army in 936. Its capital was at Jeonju, in present-day North Jeolla province. Most of our information about the kingdom comes from the accounts found in the Samguk Yusa and Samguk Sagi, which largely coincide.
When it began with his attack on Mujinju in 892, Gyeon Hwon's was only one among numerous rebellions which sprouted up against the weak Silla rulers in the late 9th century. Many of these rebellions were initially triggered by the Silla decision to use force to collect taxes on the peasantry in 889. At this time, most of the power on the peninsula was held by local gentry, who lacked strong loyalty to the central government. It was thus fairly easy for rebellions led by disaffected military officials to gain steam.
In its name, Hubaekje sought to establish itself as the legitimate successor to the ancient kingdom of Baekje which had ruled the southwestern Korean peninsula until conquered by Silla in 660.
For all but the last year of its existence, Hubaekje was ruled by Gyeon Hwon, and his personal style of rule played a key role in the kingdom's fate.
After declaring himself king, Gyeon Hwon took numerous wives, and is said to have had 10 sons by them in addition to the 8 borne by his first wife. This laid the groundwork for the strife which ended the kingdom's existence.
In 935, Gyeon Hwon chose his fourth son Geumgang over the elder sons as the crown prince of Hubaekje. At this the eldest son, Singeom, conspiring with his brothers, had his father confined to Geumsansa in Gimje. Singeom killed Prince Geumgang and took the throne for himself. However, Gyeon Hwon escaped to Goryeo.
After he was deposed by his sons in 935 and fled to Goryeo, Gyeon Hwon himself came to lead the armies against Hubaekje. Together with Wanggeon, the Samguk Yusa reports that he led an army of 100,000 against his former kingdom. The Goryeo and Hubaekje armies met at Seonsan, today part of Gumi in North Gyeongsang province, and the Hubaekje forces were destroyed. Hubaekje thus finally fell in 936, one year after King Gyeongsun had surrendered Silla to Wanggeon. The battle of Seonsan thus marked the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period.
In his own characteristically open-handed style, Wanggeon conferred a title upon the defeated leader Singeom. Singeom's younger brothers Yanggeom and Yonggeom, who were judged to have been to blame for the coup d'etat, were sent into exile.

Reconstructed gonghu 공후 (angular harp) from South Korea
A brief South Korean news segment about a concert featuring reconstructed gonghu (공후 / 箜篌), an angular harp formerly used in the traditional music of Korea, especially during Korea's Three Kingdoms and Later Silla periods, which overlapped China's Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui Dynasty, and Tang Dynasty.
From MBC News, July 1, 2003.
This reconstructed instrument, built jointly by Chonbuk National University music professor Cho Seok-yeon (조석연) and master traditional musician Ko Su-hwan (고수환), has 23 strings, tuned to a 7-tone scale using yanggeum (hammered dulcimer) strings instead of silk strings for additional volume, and tuning pegs from a modern 25-string kayagum.
Although gonghu of at least three types were formerly used in Korea, they fell out of use there centuries ago, though traces of it remain in Korea's literary and artistic heritage.
In 1937, just before it was occupied by Japanese forces, the a-ak master Ham Hwa-jin (함화진 / 함화진, 1884-1948) purchased three reconstructed konghou in Beijing, which are still on display in the museum of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts in Seoul. These instruments were not used, however, because although historical documents discussed these instruments, their technique of playing was not handed down.
In the late 1960s in South Korea, two types of gonghu, the sugonghu (수공후) and the wagonghu (와공후), were reconstructed, but these were not put to practical use.
In 2002, Ko and Cho decided to attempt to create a playable reconstructed gonghu, using as their models a gonghu played by an apsara (비천상 / 飛天像) on a Silla-period bell cast in the year 725, kept at the Sangwonsa temple (상원사) in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon province, South Korea, as well as the reconstructed Tang-era kugo in the Shōsōin Repository in Nara, Japan. By 2005, after making modifications in their design based on data regarding angular harps formerly used in Egypt, Iran, India, and other places, they had successfully developed a playable Korean gonghu.
Beginning in 2002, each year at Chonbuk National University in Jeonju, South Korea a gonghu concert is held, sometimes including players of angular and arched harps from other Asian nations such as Japan, China, and Myanmar.
Projects to revive the baeso (배소, panpipes), bipa (비파, pear-shaped lute), wolgeum (월금, round-bodied lute), and geum (금, 7-string bridgeless zither) are also underway in South Korea.

Learning about Korean traditional instruments and music
Dan Damon is a BBC Radio host and journalist specializing in global conflicts. In 2014 he visited Korea at the invitation of the Korean Culture & Information Service. It was Dan′s second visit to Korea. He developed interest in Korea when he visited the country for the first time in 2013 to cover North Korean defectors living in the South. He is currently studying for a doctorate degree in Korean unification and media in London. Dan began by studying about North Korean society but later he developed interest in the history of both Koreas, and now he wants to learn about Korean culture as well.
He is particularly fond of the Korean traditional musical instruments gayageum and geomungo, and he even takes gayageum classes in London. During his trip to Korea he wanted to visit the hometown of the gayageum and the geomungo. The first place that he visited was the Ureuk World Music House run by American musician Anna Cybele. Anna and her husband accompanied Dan throughout his journey, during which he learned about ancient string instruments dating back more than 2,000 years, folklore music, and Korean history.
