Oirase Stream Complete Guide and Towada Lake Highlights [Latest]
A lively and uplifting landscape
The Oirase Stream is a 14km mountain stream of the Oirase River that flows from Aomori Prefecture’s Lake Towada’s Nenokuchi to Mt. Yakeyama.
The stream officially belongs to the Towada Kohan-ko Noguchi National Park, and it is designated as a national monument of the country of Japan.
There are numerous waterfalls dotted along the stream and thus it is sometimes called the Waterfall Road.
There are over 27 scenic waterfalls to see, including the Choshi Otaki which blocks fish from swimming up the river, the Kumoi-no-Taki and the Asura-no-Nagare, and the Samidare-no-Nagare. The area is beautiful in all 4 seasons with beautiful green leaves in May-June and autumn colors in October.
Enjoyment tips and notes
Along the Oirase Stream, there is a path that leads from Yakeyama to Nenokuchi. The whole journey is about 14km and takes more than 4.5 hours. You need to have a lot of energy to complete this journey.
A shorter path from Ishigedo to Nenokuchi takes 3.5 hours.
You can enjoy a slow walk along this path while savoring the scenery.
The Oirase Stream is designated as a natural monument and there are numerous plants here which are in danger of extinction, and so in order to protect the national park, you should not destroy or take plants, and enjoy the natural surroundings without disturbing anything. Additionally, you should not venture outside of the roped-off areas along the road.
Access
Yakeyama or Ishigedo acts as the entrance to the Oirase Stream and to get there you can go to JR Shin-Aomori Station (新青森駅) or JR Hachinohe Station (八戸駅) and from either of these, you can take a bus bound for the Towada Kyu-ya (十和田湖休屋).
From Shin-Aomori Station it is about 120mins or from Hachinohe Station it is a 90-minute bus ride. If you are coming by car, it is about 70~90 minutes to get there so you should make sure you have plenty of time to spare to get there.

The Oirase River 奥入瀬川 in Aomori Prefecture belongs to the Towada-Hachimantai National Park 十和田八幡平国立公園. Oirase is the only river draining Lake Towada, a large caldera lake on the border of Aomori and Akita. The river flows in a generally eastern direction into the Pacific Ocean. It runs through a virgin forest rich in variety, containing white cedar, Japanese beech, maple trees, dense green vegetation, ripples in the river, and rocks poking above the water covered with plants and moss. The upper reaches form a scenic gorge with numerous rapids. Oirase Gorge (Oirase Keiryu/奥入瀬渓流) is 14km in length and 200m deep. Worth of seeing are the various waterfalls with different appearances like the Tamasudare-no-taki (Bead Curtain Waterfall) 玉簾の滝, the 25-metre-high Kumoi-no-taki (Cloud Waterfall) 雲井の滝, and the Choshi-otaki (Choshi-otaki Waterfall) 銚子大滝 known as one of the numerous mini-Niagaras of Japan.
