Choupal - Coimbra (Portugal)
A MATA NACIONAL DO CHOUPAL, localizada em Coimbra, imortalizada pelos poetas e pela canção de Coimbra, nasceu da necessidade de regularizar as cheias do Mondego. Com uma área de 79 hectares, uma largura máxima de 400 metros, a mata do Choupal bordeja o rio Mondego numa extensão de 2 Km. A mata possui uma alameda central, de onde partem caminhos laterais. Na zona central há um parque de merendas, um bar e a casa do Guarda. Na mata há também campos de ténis, de basquetebol e de voleibol, ao lado dos quais existe um magnífico bambuzal. Para além de um local calmo e relaxante, o Choupal é um excelente local para a prática de exercício físico. Este vídeo mostra o Choupal numa manhã de domingo em que se realizaram algumas corridas e caminhadas.
THE CHOUPAL NATIONAL FOREST, located in Coimbra (Portugal), inspiring of poets, was born from the need to regularize the flooding of the river Mondego. With an area of 79 hectares and a maximum width of 400 meters, the Choupal forest borders the river Mondego in an extension of 2 Km. The forest has a central avenue, from which come out side paths. In the central area there is a picnic area, a bar and the house of the keeper. In the forest there are also tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, next to which there is a magnificent bamboo grove. In addition to a quiet and relaxing place, Choupal is an excellent place to practice physical exercise. This video shows the Choupal on a Sunday morning in which took place a few runs and walks.

In Portugal, Grandparents Day is celebrated on July 26. The celebration of this day is done through events and activities that seek to demonstrate affection and appreciation to all the grandparents. This date was chosen because it is the day of St. Anne and St. Joachim, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus Christ. The project Milene Matos - BIO Somos Todos in partnership with Living Place – Animação Turística developed an intergenerational activity that allowed participants to learn a bit of history, fauna and flora of the Choupal National Forest, in Coimbra (0:08). Parque Dr. Manuel Braga, vulgarmente designado por Parque da Cidade, foi projectado em 1920, cabendo ao floricultor e paisagista portuense Jacinto de Matos a execução da obra. A partir dessa data, tem marcado presença em qualquer postal panorâmico da cidade e presenteia quem o atravessa com uma agradável sombra em dias quentes de Verão ou com o fascinante mesclado das folhas caídas durante o Outono. Ligado às tradições da Academia, por ter sido, no passado recente, o local da realização das “Noites do Parque”, constitui, desde há muitos anos, um dos locais preferidos para o recreio e lazer dos conimbricenses. Recentemente a Câmara Municipal reforçou esse hábito ao promover espectáculos no bonito coreto do parque.
Este jardim, implantado à beira do rio Mondego, permite uma leitura perfeita da orla ribeirinha e da albufeira: na outra margem, para Este, a Ponte Rainha Santa Isabel e aquela que é a curva mais bonita do rio, com os salgueirais que a ladeiam e, quase em frente a Lapa dos Esteios, para Oeste, a encosta de Santa Clara, onde ainda restam alguns núcleos de carvalhal, em frente, a Praça da Canção, do lado direito, a Mata Nacional do Choupal.

Coimbra is the original name of a song of the 1930's, with music by Raul Ferrao* and lyrics by José Galhardo, but more widely known as April in Portugal. Coimbra is a city in Portugal on the Mondego River about 100 miles north of Lisbon. It is also the seat of an old university, and the original lyrics of this romantic song are such an odd, incomprehensible allusion to student life that one can hardly imagine that anybody wrote them with any expectation that the song would become world-famous. It did indeed achieve fame, though, with new title and new lyrics in English, French and other languages. Choupal is a district along the Mondego, and Inês was the heroine of a medieval drama.
The song, which is called a 'fado' (fate) has a truly beautiful melody.
In the US, it was performed by such ... as Bing Crosby, Liberace and Louis Armstrong.
I visited Portugal briefly in 1991, without knowing a word of the language, but now that I've already spent 6 months in Brazil and am planning another 6 months soon, I have gotten interested in Portuguese, spoken in Brazil also.
Below I have reproduced the original Portuguese lyrics of Coimbra, with my own literal translation. The obscurity is part of the song; it's not my doing. I've also appended the English lyrics of April in Portugal by James Kennedy. If they are trite, at least they are intelligible.
