Gun policy in New Zealand after the Christchurch massacre - Dr Marie Russell & Dr Hera Cook
What has been achieved and what do we still need to do to create lasting change in our gun culture? The first round of legislation following the Christchurch massacre was an enormous achievement, the first substantial improvement in our gun legislation in decades. Nonetheless, it was far weaker than the legislation following the Port Arthur massacre in Australia. This seminar looks at claims about traditional kiwi gun culture, the role of hunting and farming, suicide and family violence. We then examine a range of measures that have been proposed to ensure that we have effective gun control into the future.
Hera is an interdisciplinary researcher. Her background is in social/cultural history and relations of power. Research projects include LGBTIQ homelessness, the history of emotional management, Female cosmetic genital surgery in the UK and USA, inequalities and New Zealand firearms policy. Marie is a qualitative social researcher, currently studying firearms, women’s cycling, and breastfeeding rates. Other interests include workers’ history and children's well-being.

First European Settlement - Russell, New Zealand
Located in the Bay of Islands of the North Island, Russell - once known as Kororareka - was the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand. The town was established to promote trade and relations between the Europeans and the native Maori. But lawlessness became the norm in the town and Kororareka soon became known as the Hell Hole of the Pacific. But it eventually became known as Russell, taking over the name of a village that had at one point been designated the capital of New Zealand.
Today Russell is a quiet beach town, host to tourists and home to shops and restaurants.

A Day in the Life of the Prophet in Auckland, New Zealand
The location of a new temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Auckland, New Zealand, has been announced by President Russell M. Nelson during a Tuesday evening devotional in the country’s largest city. “Today I am pleased to announce that the new temple will be built in Auckland on Redoubt Road,” said President Nelson. The temple will be on a hill between the missionary training center and the Redoubt stake center. President Nelson said the temple will be a “two- story building with a granite exterior. Its light and beauty will be highly visible.”
Prior to the devotional, the prophet met with local leaders, including Auckland Mayor Phil Goff, who spoke briefly at a reception. Mayor Goff said, “President Nelson, … your Church is a very important faith organization in New Zealand. The Church performs a very important role in the values that you teach and in the community service that you give us.”
He gave special thanks to the Church for its response to the March 15, 2019, terrorist attacks on two mosques in Christchurch that killed 51 people. “Your Church was one of the first churches to come out to condemn the act, to express your solidarity with people of the Muslim faith,” he said. “Your missionaries in Christchurch helped at the community center. Your ladies in Dunedin helped set up a women’s support center.”

Russel / Neuseeland / New Zealand
Neuseelands älteste Kirche Christ Church in Russell, Januar 2001
