England 2019 Episode 28: Christ Church, Oxford
The town of Oxford was founded in the 10th c., with the first centers of learning established by the Augustinians in the early 12th century. Today the university is comprised of 38 separate colleges.
One of Oxford's most famous colleges is Christ Church. It was founded in 1525 by Henry VIII's powerful Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey, who appropriately named it Cardinal College. The college was built on the site of Saint Frideswide's monastery, which was founded circa 730. Oxford town likely traces its origins to the community that grew up around the monastery, as seems to be confirmed by the discovery of Saxon clothing, tools, and other artifacts in the immediate vicinity. Upon Wolsey's fall from favor a few years later, Henry himself took control, ultimately combining the college and the church (which by this time had been elevated to a cathedral) and renaming it Christ Church. John & Charles Wesley are among the school's illustrious alumni.
Tom Gate Tower is the grand main entrance to the college, built by Christopher Wren in 1681. It is named for Thomas Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury who was murdered in 1170. But this is generally not where visitors enter the college. Just past the War Memorial Garden, from which there's a nice view of the college with its cathedral looming behind, we reach Meadow Gate where the visitor's entrance is located.
After passing through an open courtyard, we reach the compact 15th c. cloisters. From here, a staircase, crowned with a splendid 17th c. fan-vaulted ceiling, leads up to the Old Hall. The vast room is immediately recognizable as Hogwart's Hall in the Harry Potter movies. With its magnificent hammerbeam roof, this is by far the largest old hall in Oxford. The portraits on the walls are of some of the college's better-known alumni, including the philosopher John Locke and American founding father William Penn.
Christ Church lays claim to the only college chapel that is also a cathedral. The 15th century choir with its vaulted ceiling is magnificent. The finely carved polychrome retable at the high altar is from 1881. Nearby is the Shrine of St Frideswide, whose original canopy of 1289 was destroyed during the Reformation, but the pieces were discovered and the shrine reconstructed in the 19th century. The life of the saint is portrayed in the stained glass above the shrine. Other funerary monuments include the tombs of Sir George Nowers (1425) and Alexander de Sutton (1316).
Most of the stained glass in the cathedral is from the 19th c., however some earlier stained glass survived the Reformation, including a 14th c. window depicting the martyrdom of Thomas Becket (the central pane in the more brightly colored upper section).
Every hour, all activity in the cathedral pauses for a brief period of prayer.
Tom's Quad is the largest quadrangle in Oxford. That's the Tom Gate Tower again on the opposite side of the quad. A statue of Mercury stands guard at the fountain in the center. The northeast corner of the quad is occupied by the Deanery, with its castellated parapet. Beyond it is another quad where Christ Church Picture Gallery is located, containing a small but important collection including a Deposition (the Master of Delft, 16th c.), the Supper at Emmaus (Lorenzo Lotto, 16th c.), and The Four Musical Angels (Bernardo Daddi, 14th c.).

Oxford, a city in central southern England, revolves around its prestigious university, established in the 12th century. The architecture of its 38 colleges in the city’s medieval center led poet Matthew Arnold to nickname it the 'City of Dreaming Spires'. University College and Magdalen College are off the High Street, which runs from Carfax Tower (with city views) to the Botanic Garden on the River Cherwell
Oxford is a city in the South East region of England and the county town of Oxfordshire. Oxford is the 52nd largest city in the United Kingdom, and one of the fastest growing and most ethnically diverse. Oxford, a Visitors' Guide
A video project by Geoff Taylor for the EVO Video 2007 session, January 2007, an online workshop for using video in EFL/ESL education. This project shows a photo slideshow - a sequence of still photos - with spoken narration and musical accompaniment. It was intended to be viewed by EFL/ESL students, as a demonstration of video slideshow techniques. On reflection, I have realised that the spoken narration accompanying the slideshow is somewhat in the vocal style of the British TV nature documentary presenter, David Attenborough: hushed, respectful, quietly enthusiastic, celebratory
Copyright notes:
Music: the original version of this project used copyright music Jerusalem, by Sir Hubert Parry & William Blake, which was more suited to the content of this slideshow, but could not be presented to the group due to copyright infringements. This version uses a musical accompaniment composed and performed by the author.
Images: most of the photos were copied from other people's websites, and so may well infringe copyright. Over the last year, I have attempted to duplicate all the photos myself using my digital camera, but haven't yet managed to get all of them, and haven't had time to edit them into another version of this project. In the meantime, here follows the sources of third party photos used. If any copyright holders object, this project will immediately be withdrawn from public display.

Christ Church, Oxford
Christ Church (Latin: Ædes Christi, the temple or house, ædēs, of Christ, and thus sometimes known as The House) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in England. The college is associated with Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, which serves as the college chapel and whose dean is ex officio the college head.
Like its sister college, Trinity College, Cambridge, it was traditionally considered the most aristocratic college of its university. It is the second wealthiest Oxford college by financial endowment (after St John's) with an endowment of £371.5m as of 2014.[2]
Christ Church has produced thirteen British prime ministers, more than any other Oxbridge college. For more info visit:

Oxford England
Oxford is just 58 minutes away from London Paddington Station and about the same by car, but on Saturdays parking is pretty difficult. My train was completely packed and found myself squeezed into the corner with camera and tripod for the whole journey.
It was however well worth the effort, with one of the finest days of the year so far. It had been some time since I had a good walk around the medieval city of Oxford with its university buildings, so I'd been planning the trip for the whole week. Shame I botched the white balance, there's a green tint on the video, which gives it a certain Je ne sais quoi? but hey.
