Sinking of the new Christ of the Deep
November 17 was an exciting day for Eco Dive. We were fortunate to be part of the sinking of the new Christ of the Deep statue in the Sculpture Park in Molinere Bay.
Christ of the Abyss
Christ of the Abyss is a 8 1/2 foot, 4,000 pound bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ that stands in 25 feet of water off of Key Largo, Florida. It is located near Dry Rocks, about six miles east-northeast of the Key Largo Cut, in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
This reef is a very shallow dome shaped reef which breaks the surface at low tide on the landward side, and slopes to 25 feet on the seaward side. The statue is one of three cast from a mold by an Italian sculptor Guido Galletti. It was originally made for Egidi Cressi, the dive equipment manufacturer and later donated to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in 1966.
The original Il Christo Degli Abissi statue was placed in the Mediterranean Sea off Genoa, Italy, in 1954. In 1961, a second statue Christ of the Deep was cast from the same mold. The Cressi family of Italy donated the statue to the Underwater Society of America, which in turn donated it to the Florida State Park Service, in recognition of the conservation efforts involved in the creation of America's first underwater park.

The People under the sea
Nobody had thought of it but he had the idea. Nobody would have dared to do it, but he did it. Jason Taylor is a young English artist. An artist who has spent a long time as a diving instructor. He has two loves: the beauty of underwater landscapes and creative sculpture. Why not combine the two, and put statues on the seabed? And why not create a huge underwater museum that you can visit in diving-suit or admire from the surface with a mask? That's what Jason Taylor has done, first by himself on a small scale on Grenada Island, and then by directing a mammoth project in Cancun, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. And as you might well imagine, concrete statues rapidly undergo some big changes underwater: they become covered with curious and fascinating plants, their expressions change, so that their faces are no longer recognizable. Fish come to play and crustaceans take refuge in this maze of artificial reefs. But having fish wandering around the museum is fine. One of the goals of the operation is to save the underwater environment in Cancun, Mexico. Grenada Reefs - The Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park (2) by ScubaTech
Combining his love for scuba diving with his talent as a sculptor, Jason Taylor startet his exciting new project in May 2006. Today the Grenada Unterwater Sculpture Park is the only one in the whole world. All the sculptures are already encrusted with beautiful corals and lots of fish use them as their habitat.
Soon there will be even more sculptures donated by local and international artist.

Gili Meno Underwater Statues
I went on a solo trip to Gili Trawangan and booked a snorkeling tour in the three Gili Islands. I took the sunset barbeque cruise organized by Gili Hai.
The underwater statues was our first destination and it's just in Gili Meno. A lot of tourist are snorkeling around the statues when we arrived. So you have to take turns in diving so you can get a good video or photo. I suggest you go early (around 8am) or 12noon to avoid other tourist getting in your way.
It was surreal when I got there. I never thought I'd be able to see it up close.
So for those who are planning to go to Gili islands, make sure you visit this snorkeling spot!

11. Jason Voorheas
Made famous through the Friday the 13th film series, horror film enthusiasts can relish in a real-life rendition of the movie murderer planted under the surface among the mud and muck at the Louise pit mine in Crosby, Minnesota. What better way to tribute a drowned boy and horror flick phenomena, then through this perfect replica, left to forever lurk from 110 feet deep at the bottom of the lake. To get a further glimpse the terror make sure to check out Lahr’s channel for yourself.
10. The Statues of Thonis Heracleion and Canopus
The objects recovered from the site dating back to the 12th century BC, include colossal statues, inscriptions, remnants of grand temples, and coins and handcrafted ceramics. The civilization forever frozen in time can be found around the Abu Qir Bay, approximately 30 feet below the majestic surface of the Mediterranean.
9. Underwater grotto, Bohol, Philippines
The world’s first underwater pilgrimage in 2012, as hundreds flocked to the site where the Virgin Mary and a youthful Jesus, both 14 feet long, were immersed in the Bien Unido Double Barrier Reef Marine Park off Bohol, Philippines. The only place one can find a double barrier reef also doubles as a unique underwater grotto created by Boholanon divers and blessed by priests.
8. Ocean Atlas
The 60-ton wonder known as the Ocean Atlas signifies the greater need for ocean conservation and is placed in New Providence, Nassau— a site in urgent need of reef restoration. The record-breaking sculpture was sunk in the water in 2014 and quickly the word spread to encourage coral colonization and deter tourists who meddle with endangered reefs.
7. Amphitrite
Located 55 feet beneath the shimmering surface of the Caribbean Sea, lies a symbol of beauty so breathtaking it was as if she were sculpted by the Gods themselves. Every year thousands of divers and snorkelers flock underwater to revel in a grand sea statue just off the Grand Cayman Islands; as here, perched beneath the waves, stands a 900-foot-tall, 600-pound bronze statue of the mermaid Amphitrite. The Caribbean is never short of beauty and Amphitrite is no exception, as even the great god and protector of the sea took notice of this spectacular sea sprite and employed every dolphin in existence to help make her his wife.
6. Guardian of the Reef
Standing 13 feet tall from his based secured to the sandy seabed is the Guardian of the Reef in West Bay of Grand Cayman. Another impressive work of art by the Canadian sculptor Simon Morris, who installed the underwater anomaly to promote two things— scuba diving tourism and environmental awareness.
5. Christ of the Abyss, Italian Riviera, Portofino
Some underwater relics serve to honor those who have come and gone before us, and the Italian Riviera does just that. Here, an 8-foot bronze rendition of Christ honors the first Italian diver to lose his life scuba diving in 1947. Created by Italian sculptor Guido Galleti, the memorial is cemented to the sea floor 33 feet beneath the surface and signifies one of the most famous dive destinations in Italy.
4. Christ of the Abyss off Key Largo, Florida
Italian sculptor Guido Galleti created not one Christ of the Abyss, but three. While the first protects the Italian Riveria, the second is contained in Granada and honors an Italian team who drowned in the tragic sinking of the M.V. Bianca passenger ship in 1961. The third can be found 27 feet below the surface off Key Largo, in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
3. The Living Sculptures, Bali
Several figures of traditional Balinese have been prepared and stored in a massive collection of underwater artworks made from unique objects such as bicycles— materials that enable coral growth and help the fragile organisms thrive in light of their natural habitats facing extinction.
2. Cleopatra’s Lost Kingdom
The last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt resonates in history books as the highly idolized Cleopatra. This legendary “princess” had a palace, one that happened to get pushed into the sea by tidal waves around 1,600 years ago.
1. Subacuatico de Arte or MUSA
2009 saw one of the largest and most ambitious underwater artificial art attractions the world has ever seen. Today, 500 permanent life-sized and monumental sculptures pervade the ocean floor in a submerged museum of contemporary art called the Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA). The project was founded by Roberto Díaz Abraham, former President of the Cancun Nautical Association and Jaime González Cano, Director of the National Marine Park.
Kristu tal-Bahhara 25th Anniversary blessing in Malta
Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Jesus Christ statue found underwater, at the point of Qawra, Malta. It was first blessed by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1990 and was now re-blessed by the Archbishop of Malta, Mgr. Charles J. Scicluna. I would like to thank everyone who was on site to celebrate this memorable event.
Underwater Sculptures in St. George's, Grenada
The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park is a collection of ecological underwater contemporary art located in the Caribbean sea off the west coast of Grenada, West Indies and was created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. In May 2006 the world's first underwater sculpture park was open for public viewing. Taylor's aim was to engage local people with the underwater environment that surrounds them using his works which are derived from life casts of the local community. He installed concrete figures onto the ocean floor, mostly consisting of a range of human forms, from solitary individuals to a ring of children holding hands, facing into the oceanic currents.
Exploring the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park
At the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park, you’ll now find around a hundred individual sculptures, comprising both solo and group installations and covering over 800 square meters of the seabed.
The best part is that it’s just a 10-minute boat ride from St. Georges and 15 minutes from Grand Anse, west of Grenada. So pack your travel and snorkeling gear, head over to Grenada island, and get ready to see these fascinating sculptures!
Vicissitudes
Vicissitudes is one of Taylor’s most notable sculptures. Located 5 meters below the surface of the water, it’s composed of life-sized figures of local children holding hands and forming a circle. With the concrete sculpture now forming corals, the natural transformation reflects how children can adapt to any environment as they grow up.
Grace Reef
Grace Reef is a dynamic installation that consists of 16 female forms that lie on the sand. Unbound and exposed at 4 meters underwater, these sculptures resemble the female form of a Grenadian lady and are meant to evolve as they get covered by sand and corals or rediscovered over time.
The Lost Correspondent
This installation, found 7 meters underwater, features a man poised over a typewriter while sitting in front of a desk covered with newspaper clippings. The articles, which date back to the 1970s, include documentation on Grenada’s involvement with Cuba. Together, the work draws attention to changes in communication and captures a pivotal moment in Grenada’s history.
TAM CC Faces
Thanks to the involvement of students from the local community college, this installation features a diverse collection of life-sized faces molded side by side into a large rock. As species of tunicates and algae gradually take over the concrete, the more these faces will exhibit diversity.
The Fall from Grace
More popularly known as the “Man on a Bike,” the sculpture showcases a life-sized man cycling along the side of a reef. You can find this installation by diving a little over 21 feet below the surface of the water, which could be an adventure on its own.
The Amerindian Petroglyphs
The Amerindian Petroglyphs is one of the newest installations in this underwater sculpture park. Fashioned by local craftsman Troy Lewis, it features 14 sculptures based on Amerindian art, culture, and spiritual worship.
The UnStill Life
One of the most popular installations in the sculpture park, The UnStill Life (situated over 25 feet below the surface) features a classic still life composition of a vase and fruit bowl on a table. Like the other sculptures found throughout the underwater museum, this piece will gradually be colonized by coral, sponges, and other marine life, adding another layer of meaning to the sculpture.
The Silent Cry
One of the newest installations, this time by local sculptor Rene Froehlich and local craftsman Jefferson Thomas (the Buju of Grenville), The Silent Cry was constructed to represent the organic root system of giant trees in the Grenadian rainforest. It is 7 feet tall and the first of a series of seven by Froehlich.
Sienna
Sienna is another sculpture that shows the human form, but with interwoven metal strands. The elegant installation is said to be of a young skin diver from a local story and its unique construction allows her to be open to the flow of water.
Christ of the Deep
This Christ sculpture was dedicated during the 50th anniversary of the Bianca B cruise ship tragedy. It’s actually a replica of the one in St. Georges, which was purchased to show gratitude to the Grenadians for helping the survivors after the ship sank in October 1961.
