Located in Salzburg’s Cathedral Square, the Christmas Market in Salzburg has deep historical roots and is one of the world’s oldest Advent markets. Every year, the market is officially opened on the Thursday preceding the first Sunday in Advent and closes on December 26. This famous market draws countless visitors every Christmas season and is also very popular with the locals, not least because of the traditional huts and unique atmosphere, but also the specially designed lighting that stretches above the market stands.

The Salzburg Christmas Market is one of the most famous in Austria and one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world.
Also known as the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt, it's a beautiful place to visit during the winter holidays for a taste of one of the finest Christmas markets in Europe.
The Christmas Market in Salzburg dates back to the 15th century. Since then markets have been held throughout the city during the holidays to the admiration of locals and tourists alike.
When the markets are up you can scroll through the festive atmosphere with vendors selling a wide range of Austrian Specialties. There are local chocolates, mulled wine, hot punch, Christmas decorations, handmade clothing, and plenty of other things for sale at the various markets.
Every year there are around 100 market stands. Throughout the week live Christmas concerts and parades are held so the markets are a great place to visit if you're traveling with kids.

THE MOST MAGICAL CHRISTMAS MARKET (Salzburg) | A Switzerland Trip
The Swiss adventure begins! This trip happened in December 2018 and we started off by visiting the most overwhelming Christmas market (Christkindlmarkt) in Salzburg Austria, which is a 6 hour train ride away from Zurich.
Mel and I also had our very first Swiss mountain top experience at Mount Titlis, though the weather was pretty crappy.

Perchten, Krampus, Whip crackers, Castles, Sweets and Gluwein, holiday cheer, decorations, and snow. These are a few of our favorite things at the Salzburg Christmas Market in Austria. Maybe not as big as its cousin in Vienna but wonderful. We caught a bus into Salzburg from our rental accommodation in Germany and started of with a treat and some Gluwein before making our way over to the old city across the river. We took the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress and H ate a giant pork knuckle for dinner. We thought we'd missed the Perchten but since we were there on the winter solstice, we lucked into their return. The Christmas decorations and spirit was everywhere. Such a fun evening with the kids.

The Christmas market in front of Mirabell Palace has become a center of attraction for young and old over the last few years. Culinary delicacies, mulled wine and the lovingly decorated stalls invite visitors to stop and browse.
