Cemetery Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón in Havana
The famous cemetery Cementerio de Cristóbal Colon in Havana was founded in 1876 and is named after Christopher Columbus. The cemetery (of 57 acres) is known for its many elaborate memorials and has more than 800,000 graves. The cemetery is so large that roads are built between the graves. We saw a funeral where the family was driving in a bus behind the deceased. There are a lot of famous Cubans buried here. We have visited the grave of Ibrahim Ferrer, the lead singer of the Buena Vista Social Club.
It`s estimated that today the cemetery has more than 500 major mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults. At the cemetery is a famous legend associated with a mother. who died in childbirth.
The baby was in a coffin buried next to her but when the skeletons were excavated the baby lay on her chest. Since then it`s a place of pilgrimage for Catholics. The Colon cemetery has a 23 meter high monument to the firefighters who lost their lives in the great fire of May 17, 1890.
Baseball is a leading sport in Cuba and the cemetery has two monuments to baseball players from the Cuban League. The first was built in 1942 and the second in 1951 for members of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame. The cemetery is well maintained.

Cristóbal Colón Cemetery, Havana (Cuba) - In Another Minute (317)
- - The Cristóbal Colón Cemetery (span.: Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón) in Havana, Cuba, is one of the most significant cemeteries in Latin America - both historically and architecturally. The Cristóbal Colón Cemetery in the Vedado neighborhood was built in 1876 and designed by the Galician architect Calixto Arellano de Loira y Cardoso. He died during the initial construction and was the first to be buried at the cemetery. The graveyard was named after Christopher Columbus (span.: Cristóbal Colón), who landed in Cuba on October 28, 1492.
Today, the site spans 140 acres (57 ha) and holds 800,000 graves and 1 million interments - many of them in the 500 major mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults.
To me the most visually striking aspect of the site are all the beautiful statues, combining elegance with grief and hope. These are common to many larger Christian cemeteries, of course. More unusual and just as impressive
Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to explore this city of the dead because I had a husband and Classic Car Taxi driver waiting for me outside. So in this video I can only show you impressions from the areas close to the entrance.
The cemetery is divided into quarters by major avenues. And those sections are divided again by the status and professions of the deceased. From what I understand some tombstones and buildings are in disarray - but I didn't get to see anything like that during my short visit. Knowing that many Cubans and their off-spring live in exile, it saddens me to think of how many people are not able to visit and maintain the memorials of their family and ancestors.

With more than 800,000 graves and 1 million interments, space in the Colon Cemetery is currently at a premium and as such after three years remains are removed from their tombs, boxed and placed in a storage building.

Established in 1876, the Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón was named after Christopher Columbus and designed by a Madrid-educated Galician architect by the name of Calixto Arellano de Loira y Cardoso. Built around a central chapel that was loosely modeled after the Florence Cathedral (aka “Il Duomo”), the 150-acre cemetery is laid out in a grid of main central avenues and smaller side streets. As planned by Loira, the layout organizes the occupants of the cemetery according to their rank and social status, with the wealthy and well-connected occupying prominent spots on main thoroughfares while more lowly individuals (such as the condemned, victims of epidemics, and “pagans”) are relegated to the “suburbs.”
Colón Cemetery contains over 500 major mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults, with styles running from renaissance to neoclassical to art deco. In addition to the countless stunning examples of funerary architecture, unique sites include: an elaborate 75-foot-tall memorial for firefighters who died in a disastrous citywide fire in 1890. The very first occupant of Colón Cemetery was the architect Loira himself, who died before the project was finished.
