By the way, the name of the monastery means in the translation, the monastery is dedicated to Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate.
As usual with photographers, you try to reach the destination before sunrise to use the best light of the day. So I arrived at the large entrance gate at about 6:00 a.m. In the monastery courtyard I heard the chant of the pre-prayers from the church, the Holy Mass had already begun. So I looked around in the monastery courtyard and took some photos of the buildings.
Then I noticed a monk coming up to me from the church. After a short presentation on my part as a photographer, the monk invited me for a coffee after the Mass and went back to the church. What I did not know, the monk was Father Dionysus, the abbot of the monastery and at the same time the only monk who has lived in this monastery for 45 years.
Father Dionysus later told me at a Cyprus Coffee that the good condition of the whole monastery is due to the support with the AG Leventis Foundation and he is very grateful for this cooperation.
The Village Panagia next to the Monastery is the place where former Archbishop Makarios was born and lived with the family.
The Historical Monastery is a very small and quiet place. The daily tourist flow starts around 9:00 a.m. and lasts until late afternoon. The central point of contact for many Orthodox Christians is the historic church. Many interesting details that the monastery has to offer are unfortunately hidden from tourists due to the narrow time windows of their guides.
My recommendation, therefore, take the time to visit and enjoy all the nooks and crannies of the monastery. The abbot father Dionysus is very open to interested visitors and is happy to answer your questions personally.
Don't miss the visit of the monastery's own wine production with wine cellar, the large library with countless icons, a conference center with picture exhibition, the private room for prayer of the late Archbishop Makarios, who is from the village of Panagia Comes.
Twice a week there are also workshops for icon painting, with one of the best icon painters in Cyprus. And if you just want to have something contemplative and enjoy the silence, you are also in good hands there. In front of the monastery there is a restaurant with a viewing platform, but only in summer.
Der Name des Klosters bedeute übrigens in der Übersetzung, das Kloster ist „Unserer Lieben Frau vom Goldenen Granatapfel“ gewidmet.
Wie bei Fotografen üblich versucht man den Zielort vor Sonnenaufgang zu erreichen um das beste Licht des Tages zu nutzen. So kam ich gegen 6:00 Uhr früh am großen Eingangstor an. Im Klosterhof hörte ich den Gesang der Vorbeter aus der Kirche, die heilige Messe hatte bereits begonnen. Also schaute ich mich im Klosterhof etwas um und machte einige Fotos der Gebäude. Dann bemerkte ich einen Mönch, der aus der Kirche auf mich zu kam. Nach kurzer Vorstellung meinerseits als Fotograf lud mich der Mönch zu einem Kaffee nach der Messe ein und ging zurück in die Kirche. Was ich nicht wusste, der Mönch war Vater Dionysos, der Abt des Klosters und gleichzeitig einzige Mönch, der seit 45 Jahren in diesem Kloster lebt.
Vater Dionysos erzählte mir später bei einem Cyprus Coffee, dass der gute Zustand des ganzen Klosters auf die Unterstützung mit der „AG Leventis Stiftung“ zurückzuführen ist und er sehr dankbar ist für diese Zusammenarbeit.
Nebenbei lernte ich auch Papa Petros kennen, einen jungen Priester, der im Ort Panagia mit seiner Familie lebt. Zusammen mit anderen Priestern aus der Gegend helfen sie Vater Dionysos die Messen zu halten. Panagia ist der Ort, in dem der ehemalige Erzbischof Makarios geboren wurde und mit der Familie lebte.
Das Historische Kloster ist ein sehr kleiner und ruhiger Ort. Der täglich Touristenstrom beginnt gegen 9:00 Uhr und dauert bis zum späten Nachmittag an. Zentrale Anlaufstelle ist für viele Orthodoxe Christen die historische Kirche. Viele sehenswerten Details, die das Kloster zu bieten hat, bleiben den Touristen auf Grund der engen Zeitfenster ihrer Reiseführer leider verborgen.
Meine Empfehlung daher, nehmt euch die Zeit um alle Winkel und Details des Klosters zu besichtigen und zu genießen. Der Abt Vater Dionysos ist für interessierten Besuchern sehr offen und beantwortet gerne persönlich ihre Fragen.
Nicht verpassen sollte man die Besichtigung der Klostereigene Weinproduktion mit Weinkeller, die große Bibliothek mit unzähligen Ikonen, ein Konferenz Zentrum mit Bilderausstellung, der private Raum fürs Gebet des verstorbenen Erzbischof Makarios, der aus dem Ort Panagia stammt.
Zweimal die Woche werden auch Workshops für Ikonen Malerei angeboten, mit einer der besten Ikonen Malerin in Zypern. Und wer es einfach mal etwas Besinnlich haben möchte und die Stille genießen möchte ist dort auch bestens aufgehoben. Vor dem Kloster gibt es ein Restaurant mit Aussichtsplattform, allerdings nur im Sommerbetrieb.

Ayios Neophytos Monastery and the nearby village of Tala, Paphos, Cyprus
High in the hills above Paphos in Cyprus lies the Monastery of Agios Neophytos just beyond the village of Tala. Ayios Neophytos Monastery is said to have been founded by a Cypriot hermit and writer called Neophytos in the year 1159. Neophytos carved a home for himself out of the mountain rock and it is here that you will find some of the finest frescoes from the Byzantine period dating from the 12th to the 15th century.

Agios Neophytos Monastery - CYPRUS
Saint Neophytos Monastery (Greek: Ιερά Μονή Αγίου Νεοφύτου) lies 15 km west of Paphos, is one of the best-known monasteries in Cyprus. It was founded by monk Neophytos in the 12th century. The property is currently a museum consisting of the Engleistra (Place of Seclusion, built in a natural cave, with a small chapel) and the Monastery.
The Agios Neophytos Monastery was founded by Neophytos. After being jailed for pursuing an ascetic life, he fled into the hills of Cyprus and found a small natural cave in 1159. Months passed while he made sure the area was deserted and quiet. He slowly excavated the opening further to encompass his hermitage cell, a small chapel, and his eventual tomb. While it began as a hermitage for Neophytos alone, he eventually gained a small following and the Engleistra, as it was also called, became a quiet monastic community in 1170 when the Bishop of Paphos convinced him to take a pupil. Neophytos was staunchly against materialism and being bothered, which kept the population of monks much smaller than at other monasteries of the time. In his second Ritual Ordinance, he states that the number of monks was around fifteen or eighteen.
Panagia tou Sinti - Venetian Period Monastery in Cyprus
Panagia tou Sinti is an ancient abandoned Orthodox Monastery in Cyprus. It is located 35 km from Paphos near the village Pentalia. The Monastery was built in the 16th century and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Monastery was in use until 1927. In 1994 Restoration of the Monastery began which was completed in 1997 and earned the Europa Nostra Award. It is considered the most important structure from the Venetian Period in Cyprus.

Ayia Napa Monastery, Cyprus
Ayia Napa Monastery is the best known landmark of the Ayia Napa area. It has a charm that represents a time when Ayia Napa was a sleepy fishing village. It seems that in ancient times, the location where the monastery and the village exists today, was covered by thick forest, visited only by hunters from the neighbouring villages. There is not sufficient evidence as to when the Monastery was originally founded. The cave, the hiding place and the well, all testify to the existence of the Christian community, from the time of the Byzantine era. According to local tradition, in the cave that has now become a church, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found by a hunter. The hunter’s dog was first to see the glowing icon and began barking, insistently calling over his master.

The murals of The Holy, Royal Monastery of Kykkos Cyprus
The Holy, Royal and Stavropegic Monastery of Kykkos, is the largest & most famous monastery in Cyprus. Founded in AD1100 by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenus, Kykkos Monastery lies in the heart of the Troodos mountains. Little remains of the original monastic buildings due to devastating fires throughout the centuries. The present abbot, the Most Reverend Fr. Nikiphoros, undertook the restoration of Kykkos Monastery and this has recently been completed.
The recent murals & paintings that adorn the monastery are particularly fine and it is these that I have concentrated on for this film, following a number of visits. The frescoes in the main part of the church were painted by the Cypriot painter Gorge Georgiou & the golden mosaics are the work of the Cypriot artist Philippos Kepolas....
