It is believed that one day people saw a fire in the mountains, and dared to investigate. It was coming from a cave consisting of 3 rooms interconnected by corridors. Inside was found an ancient double-sided icon, which emitted a great light. On one side is the depiction of the Virgin Mary feeding Baby Jesus (this image is called the 'The Holy Mother) on the other side is the depiction of the Virgin Hodegetria. Today this icon, to which gold and silver were added in the 18th century, is kept at the Church of St. Nikolaos in the village of Kato Deftera. However, once a year, on Assumption Day, the icon is brought back into the cave dwelling, which has been transformed into a Church, and where fragments of frescoes from the 13th-15th centuries have survived. It is believed that the Curch of Panagia Chrysospiliotissa (golden caves) helps one find their soulmate and strengthens marital bonds.
