Touring Crete - Inside the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, Elafonisi
Inside the historic Chrysoskalitissa Monastery.
Elafonisi isn't just about the beautiful beaches, this historic monastery is worth visiting while en route to the famous beach destination of Elafonisi. Its history was born from divine measures, according to local legend, with evidence that it was the Holy Virgin Mother herself that chose the site onto which to build this monastery.
The island of Crete has a long and rugged history, and Chrysoskalitissa is no different. Built, destroyed, and rebuilt again only to face destruction and disrepair at various points in history, the structure stands high today as a memorial to the island's past.
When on travel, it's always enjoyable to learn about a country's or a region's past in between the beaches, food, and good life - this monastery is at a convenient stopping point on the road to Elafonisi for those that wish to step back in time a bit and appreciate some culture and history.
Ah yeah.
Enjoy.

Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa, Elafonisi
The monastery Chrysoskalitissa, 73 km away from Chania, was built during the Venetian Occupation on the site of the old monastery of Agios Nikolaos. It is built on steep rocks with a view of the Libyan Sea. Tradition says that one of the 99 steps is gold, but the sinners are not able to see it. This is the reason why the monastery was called Chrysoskalitissa.
The icon of Virgin Mary that is in the monastery, is estimated to be more than 1000 years old and fetes on August 15th. It is of two aisles and consecrated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary and to the Holy Trinity. Near the monastery, at the beach, a small settlement of anglers was found from the Middle Minoan Period.

Μονή Χρυσοσκαλίτισσας - Monasteri of Panagia Chrisoskalitissa, Crete in 4K
The monastery of Panagia Chrisoskalitissa is located 72km south of Chania, very close to the magnificent lagoon of Elafonissi. It operates as a nunnery and reminds of a fortress, perched on a 35m high rock with boundless sea views. The name of the monastery means Our Lady Gold-stepped in Greek. This is taken after one step out of 98, which, according to tradition, was gold. It is said that only those who really believe in god can still see it. However, another version says that the golden stair was sold by the Patriarchate to solve the economic problems of the monastery during the Turkish Era. The temple has two aisles dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity. The exact date of the establishment of the monastery is unknown. Near Chrisoskalitissa there was the monastery of St. Nicholas, which operated during the Turkish Period. On the beach, next to the monastery, a small fishing village of the Middle Minoan period has been found.
