Chuguji Temple （中宮寺） is a small but beautiful temple located a few minutes walk from the famous Horyuji Temple. This temple was used as a nunnery but it was most famous for the Miroku Bosatsu (Bodhisattva) wooden statue. Unlike some of the worship halls, this statues was open for viewing and it was a real treat to visit this temple and see this statue. Hope you get a chance to visit this temple too.

Hōryū-ji (法隆寺, Temple of the Flourishing Law) is a Buddhist temple that was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, Japan. Its full name is Hōryū Gakumonji (法隆学問寺), or Learning Temple of the Flourishing Law, the complex serving as both a seminary and monastery.
The temple's pagoda is widely acknowledged to be one of the oldest wooden buildings existing in the world, underscoring Hōryū-ji's place as one of the most celebrated temples in Japan. In 1993, Hōryū-ji was inscribed together with Hokki-ji as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Buddhist Monuments in the Hōryū-ji Area. The Japanese government lists several of its structures, sculptures and artifacts as National Treasures. A study of its shinbashira, the central wooden column almost suspended inside the Tō in 2001 led to a conclusion about the structure being older than previously thought by a century.
The temple was originally commissioned by Prince Shōtoku; at the time it was called Ikaruga-dera (斑鳩寺), a name that is still sometimes used. This first temple is believed to have been completed by 607. Hōryū-ji was dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing and in honor of the prince's father. Excavations done in 1939 confirmed that Prince Shotoku's palace, the Ikaruga-no-miya (斑鳩宮), occupied the eastern part of the current temple complex, where the Tō-in (東院) sits today. Also discovered were the ruins of a temple complex which was southwest of the prince's palace and not completely within the present temple complex. The original temple, named by modern historians and archaeologists Wakakusa-garan (若草伽藍), was lost, probably burned to the ground after being hit by lightning in 670. The temple was reconstructed but slightly reoriented in a northwest position, which is believed to have been completed by around 711. The temple was repaired and reassembled in the early twelfth century, in 1374, and 1603.

Horin-ji Temple was constructed in the year 622 at a location close to the World Heritage site of Horyu-ji Temple. Its original three-story pagoda, which had been commended and had been one of the three pagodas alongside those of Horyu-ji and Hokki-ji Temples that were collectively called the Three Pagodas of Ikaruga, had burned down but was rebuilt in 1975. A beautiful landscape has been created to adorn the Ikaruga area.

Shōtoku Taishi Bonfire Festival is dedicated to the memory of Prince Shōtoku (574-622) at the Kōryū-ji temple, which was founded in 622. Kōryū-ji is renowned for its wooden carving of Miroku Bosatsu (Buddha of the Future), which is thought to have been a gift from the Korean court to Prince Shōtoku. Miroku Bosatsu is Bodhisattva, an enlightened being who have put off entering paradise in order to help others attain enlightenment.
At the age of 19 Prince Shōtoku took over the reins of political power as regent of his aunt, Empress Suiko, who was Japan's first female monarch. Prince Shōtoku was the de facto ruler of Japan through three decades.
Prince Shōtoku’s greatest legacy to Japanese history was the Seventeen-Article Constitution, which spelled out the Confusian philosophy and Buddhist principles on which Japanese Imperial government would be based.
Prince Shōtoku sent a letter to the Chinese emperor and addressed “The Heavenly Ruler of the Land of Sunrise sends his
message to the Heavenly Ruler of the Land of Sunset.” This infuriated the emperor but his anger was mollified, when the
Japanese envoy told that Shōtoku thought of him as a Bodhisattva. The emperor wrote back: “The Emperor speaks to the
Prince of Yamato.” Prince Shōtoku responded: “The Tenno, the Ruler of the East speaks to the Emperor of the West.”

Hitakisai (bonfire festival) at Koryu-ji Temple - Kyoto, Japan
Located in the west of Kyoto, Koryu-ji is one of the oldest temples in Kyoto. It was established in the year 603 and is famous for it's wooden image of Bodhisattva called the Miroku-Bosatsu-Hanka-Shii-zo. Last November, a Hitakisai (fire festival) was held at this ancient temple. Fire Festivals are held in autumn to pay gratitude for the year's harvest by burning straw from harvested rice plants. The Hitakisai at Koryu-ji was very interesting with men chanting, praying and even shooting some arrows at the sky. As we often get requests from our lovely fans to make our videos longer, this is a nice and long (well longer than usual) 6 minute video. We hope you enjoy it!

中宮寺本尊国宝・菩薩半跏像は、台座に腰をかけて左足を下げ、右足を左の腿にのせる半跏(片足を他の足の股(もも)の上に組んですわる)の形をとり、右手は肘を曲げ指先を頼に当てて思惟をめぐらす、い わゆる半跏思惟の姿で表されている。
その優しい微笑をたたえながら静かに瞑想する表情からは清らかさが感じられる仏像に２０１４年４月に初の孫を連れた家族旅行で中宮寺を訪ねて昔、教科書で見た記憶に残っていた微笑する美人に半世紀以上経過して対面出来た。

Established by Prince Shotoku, who is said to have introduced Buddhism to Japan, Horyuji is one of Japan's oldest temples. Its main hall, five storied pagoda and central gate are all located in the temple's Saiin Garan in Western Precinct and dates back to the 7th century, all of which are the world's oldest extant wooden structures.
Next to the Saiin Garan, there is Daihozoin, which was newly constructed and displays a part of the temple's art collection. The main attraction of the Horyuji's Toin Garan in Eastern Precinct is the Yumedono, the Hall of Visions.
Horyuji has been listed on the list of UNESCO world heritage site since 1993. Unlike many other historic spots in Japan, Horyuji is wheelchair accessible and offers pamphlets in various foreign languages.
Hours: 8:00 to 17:00 (Closed at16:30 from early November to late February)
Closed: Opened all year round
