Lam Takhong Dam
Lam Takhong Dam is at Tambon Lat Bua Khao, 62 kilometres from Korat. This is a rest stop along the highway which affords panoramic views of the reservoir. The dam is an earth-filled dam across the Lam Takhong River that flows through a crevasse. Built in 1974, its primary purpose is to divert water from above the dam for irrigation.
Ban Nam Sai community Phang Nga
Baan Nam Sai community was built for the Tsunami victims of the year 2004. Now, with new houses and community, skills and brighter future, their lives are no longer in despair.
This is what they can now really call homes, new permanent homes with sustainable careers. The lives of these villagers who were affected by the Tsunami disaster in 2004 are getting stronger and becoming vigorous once again in Baan Nam Sai community.
The village was built under the initiative of HRH Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, who recently revisited the area and showed her deep concern for the unlucky people who suffered from the loss of their land and houses in, Lamkaen sub-district of Thai-Muang in Phang-Nga province.
The home and community project is being built to help make new lives for the people and to help establish new fresh careers. The Phang-Nga Provincial Authority has gained approval from the Ministry of Interior to allow the Chulabhorn Research Institute to utilize the 24 rai plot of land to assure the purpose of rebuilding the villagers, livelihood, housing and careers in the post Tsunami.
A community member Wandee Sittirirk expressed her appreciation for the Princess.
The princess cares about the affected people and graciously initiated the housing project. We have a better life now. As a project, it not only provides houses but also career training for us to make a living. Also, many organizations came in to support in terms of training. And we earn income to support our families.
The training centre for villagers in the community is giving them new opportunities and ways into business. The centre is providing them skills in hospitality with courses such as spa treatment, cookery, tourism management skills and English language. These skills are to help villagers join companies already in business or to be able to set up their own businesses once they are ready to face the economic challenges in the world again.
Metinee Mongkol, leader of Baan Nam Sai Community told us more about the project and how lucky they are to get such support.
We have 35 households altogether now. The project is planned to accommodate 60 houses. After the disaster, we all felt so vague and hopeless about the future. I think we are so fortunate to have this royal project. We did not expect to have such enormous kind support.
The construction started in May 2006 by the army. HRH Princess Chulabhorn graciously presided over the inaugural stone laying for training centre and some houses in 2007 and revisited them again on the 18th of March 2009.
The community project has 60 two storey permanent houses that are mainly made of wood for the residents. Also a training centre, kids centre and other activity centers in a total of 9 buildings plus public utilities which have already been built. The whole project will be completed around 2013 which will bring comfort and convenience to all the people in the community.
Baan-Nam-Sai community project gives new hope to all the members here. HRH Princess Chulabhorn Walailak graciously supported and inspired this community to never give up and look ahead with more confidence in their future lives. Their smiles and happy faces are already showing the fruits of this project.
