Chung Tai Chan Monastery (中台禪寺) - Puli Town, Nantou County, Taiwan
Located in Puli Township (埔里鎮), Nantou County (南投縣), Taiwan is the famous Chung Tai Chan Monastery (中台禪寺), the headquarters of a Taiwan-based Buddhist monastic order (Chung Tai Chan) founded by the Venerable Master Wei Chueh in 1987. The building is also called Chung Tai Buddhist Temple. The beginning of the video shows the entrance to a nearby Chung Tai Museum (中台山博物館) housing Buddhist relics and statues. The golden statue is the Milefu at the entrance, and inside is the Hall of Heavenly Kings protected by 4 very tall 12m-high guardian statues.
Chung Tai Chan Monastery (中台禪寺), Puli, Nantou, Taiwan, 3/5/2013
Chung Tai Chan is a Taiwan-based Buddhist monastic order founded by the Venerable Master Wei Chueh in 1987. The monastery headquarters, Chung Tai Chan Monastery (or Chung Tai Buddhist Temple, 中台禪寺), completed in September 2001, is located in Puli, Nantou County, in central Taiwan. It is the tallest and one of the largest temples and monastery in both Taiwan and the world, having a height of 136 metres (446 ft). Widely admired as an architectural masterpiece because of the mountain monastery's more modern look, the temple is second only to Fo Guang Shan's monastery in physical size and in the number of ordained disciples.
Viewed from afar, the main building of Chung Tai resembles a cultivator in sitting meditation, surrounded by mountains, majestic and serene. The entire structure is an embodiment of the Dharma, unifying sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation. The three central Buddha halls rise vertically to the golden dome on top, symbolizing sudden enlightenment to the ultimate truth—awaken the mind and see the true nature; seeing the true nature one becomes a buddha. The pilgrimage stairways on both sides of the monastery represent the gradual bodhisattva path (a bodhisattva is a Buddha-to-be, one with infinite compassion for all beings), each step leading to the attainment of buddhahood not just for oneself but for all beings.
The architecture of Chung Tai Chan Monastery expresses a harmony of the arts, culture, science, and the teachings of the Buddha, and is a wonderful application of the Five Modern Approaches of Buddhism. Soon after the Monastery's completion, it was awarded The 23rd Annual Taiwan Architecture Award in 2002, and The 20th International Award for Lighting Design in 2003. Having received wide acclaim and recognition, the monastery is a landmark of 21st century religious architecture.

Chung Tai Chan Monastery , Puli, Taiwan ]
