Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Dartmoor, Devon
Widecombe-in-the-Moor is a village at the bottom of a sheltered valley within Dartmoor National Park in Devon. It's a small village, built mostly around a building called The Church House.
St Pancras' Church, the villages' parish church, is known as the Cathedral of the Moor due to its 120ft tall tower.
The name 'Widecombe' comes from 'Withycombe' which is an old English word for a Willow Valley.
Today, the village is very popular with tourists due to its beautiful, remote setting and its feeling as if it's still stuck in the past. The village is well known for being home to Widecombe Fair, a historic fair held on the first Tuesday of September which is where the folk song of the same name comes from.

Ingleby Moor & Greenhow Bank, North York Moors - 30 April 2012
A 10 mile circular walk from Ingleby Greenhow up onto Ingleby Moor and returning via Ingleby Incline on Greenhow Bank in the North York Moors. Starting from the village the walk heads towards Ingleby Bank at Bank Foot, climbing steeply to a viewpoint location. From here the walk crosses Ingleby Moor towards the rim of Grain Beck Valley before heading south west along Middle Head Top to Burton Howe , a Bronze Age burial chamber. At Burton Howe the route joins the Cleveland Way heading south towards Bloworth Crossing, here the walk turns a sharp right heading north west and follows the route of the old Rosedale Ironstone Railway towards Ingleby Incline, the ¾ mile straight where ironstone descended down from the moors to the Cleveland Plain below. Here the walk follows the old line of the railway back towards Bank Foot and then returns the same way as previous, passing Ingleby Manor then entering the village and returning to the starting location at Ingleby Greenhow church.

Kitty Jay's Grave & St Winifred Church Manaton ,Dartmoor, Devon U.K
Back in the late eighteenth century, 1790 some say, an orphaned baby was taken into the Poor House at Newton Abbot. The little girl was named, as was the custom, with a surname beginning with whatever letter the Poor House had progressed to, in this case 'J'. As many of the commoner names had been taken the baby girl ended up with 'Jay'. In those days the word 'Jay' was also a slang term for a prostitute so the Christian name of Mary was added.
Mary Jay remained at the Wolborough Poor House until her teens where she supervised the younger children. Then she was sent to Canna farm which was located outside Manaton.
It may have been at this farm that Mary Jay got her more famous name of 'Kitty'.
