Bromley is a district of south east London, England, located 9.3 miles south east of Charing Cross. Bromley is the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Bromley, and identified as a major metropolitan centre in the London Plan.
Bromley was historically a market town chartered since 1158 and an ancient parish in the county of Kent. Its location on a coaching route and the opening of a railway station in 1858 were key to its development, and the economic history of Bromley is underpinned by a shift from an agrarian village to commerce and retail. As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century, Bromley significantly increased in population and was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1903.
Bromley has developed into one of a handful of regionally significant commercial and retail districts outside central London and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. Most of Bromley including the town centre falls under the BR1 postcode district, whereas areas to the west towards Shortlands are part of BR2 instead.
Bromley is located 9.3 miles (15 km) south east of Charing Cross and is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan. Bromley is a post town in the BR postcode area, consisting of BR1 and part of the BR2 postcode district. BR1 covers Bromley, Bickley, Sundridge Park and part of Downham; and the BR2 portion covers Hayes, Shortlands, Bickley and Bromley Common.

An original 1966 British Pathe video about some of London's quirks and the reason people are attracted to the city.
An original 1966 British Pathe video about some of London's quirks and the reason people are attracted to the city. Initially called London the title has been changed to differentiate it from other clips in the archive. [Edited - 07/06/2012]

George Casey, sports journalist, eating a pub sandwich. C/U of the back to front sign for the 'Gentlemen's' - a printer's joke! Various shots of theatrical and historical artefacts on the pub walls.
Various shots of a Sherlock Holmes theme pub in Baker Street that looks like the detective's study, the landlord wears a deerstalker. Various shots of a pub in Covent Garden where Barrow boys from the market mix with baritones of the Opera House. Some shots of vegetable deliveries at Covent Garden.
More shots of the cheeky cockney barrow boy selling china to an eager crowd - he throws a pile of china in the air and catches them. Several 'plants' in the audience start the bidding - very 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'!
Note: this story is a bit of an odd mixture - it appears to use material from other Colour Pictorials: the water scooter is in AMPHIBIOUS WATER SCOOTER in CP 574, it also revisits places previously featured - the Sherlock Holmes pub is in SHERLOCK HOLMES PUB in CP 162. Other sequences may also have been reused or revisited.
Cuts exist - please see separate record.

----------------------------------------
Grove Park is a quiet district taking its name from Grove Farm, an area of land which was located immediately opposite the front of Grove Park Library. The train station was the catalyst of the area's birth in the 1870s.
St Augustine's Church is a Church of England. Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a Grove Park resident and ministered here in the first half of the seventies.
Baring Road (formerly Bromley Road) is the spine of Grove Park from which everything branches off. The set-up of the GPCG or Grove Park Community Group there in 1972 is a big reason why the district still exists in its current form today.
Railway Children Walk is a 200-metre heritage trail commemorating the world famous 1906 children's novel 'The Railway Children' by E.Nesbit. The back of Edith Nesbit's house on Baring Road overlooked the railway line and is partially referenced by name in the story. Part of her old garden now forms the Grove Park Nature Reserve established in 1984.
The area was mostly woodland before they cut down and burned the trees for charcoal in the 18th century. This accounts for the section name Burnt Ash.
Brick maker and Victorian builder John Pound was born in Blackheath in 1827 was responsible for much of the late 19th century development of Grove Park including The Baring Hall Hotel & Pub previously threatened by demolition after a fire inside it in 2000.
Desmond Tutu lived in Chinbrook Road from 1972-
1975 before he was later elevated to the world stage during the 1980s as a South African activist and opponent of apartheid. Lewisham Council made him an Honorary Freeman of the Borough in 1990.
When an opera singer discovered Desmond Tutu used to live in her house, she invited him back in 2016 to create a peace garden in Chinbrook Meadows 150 yards away in honour of his work in peace and reconciliation.
Chinbrook Meadows was a dairy farm before it became a public park in 1937. It hosts the annual Grove Park Carnival & Chinbrook Dog Show.
Sixty years ago the River Quaggy here was channelized into ugly concrete culverts just to alleviate flooding. They pulled all of this up at the turn of the century to give it a more open and naturally meandering appearance with wooden bridges going across it; a lot more pleasant to attract wildlife and the public back to the area. Shortly afterwards, Chinbrook won the Green Flag Award for best UK park, two years in a row.

Downham - A Home in the Country
Downham is a district of south east London, within the London Borough of Lewisham. It borders the London Borough of Bromley, and is located north of Bromley and south of Catford.
Downham was named in honour of Lord Downham, who was chairman of the London County Council between 1919-20
Origins of Downham estate
Before 1920, the area had no houses, apart from a shooting range close to Rangefield Road and areas of farmland in the period around 1890. Some belonged to Holloway Farm and others to Shroffolds Farm. Following the First World War, local boroughs like Deptford, Bermondsey as well as the London County Council [LCC] felt it was essential to reduce overcrowding by erecting more residential property. This needed to excel that which was provided by private landlords. The final spur for LCC to commence works in the area was the new law of 1923 that provided government funding to enable residential developments to be built by local governments. As a result, the Downham Estate was developed towards the end of the 1920s by the London County Council.
The area of the estate was in the region of 522 acres (2.1 km²), with 461 acres (1.9 km²) in the Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham, (from 1965 the London Borough of Lewisham) and 61 acres (0.2 km²) in the Municipal Borough of Bromley (from 1965 the London Borough of Bromley); the estate stretched for about 1.25 miles (2 km). Prior to this, most of the terrain was countryside. However parts around Grove Park railway station to the east had already begun to experience some building works. In this territory which was the then furthest extreme of London, 5659 homes of different sizes were built. 408 apartment complexes of four storeys were also erected.
At the time of development, the area was considered ‘a showpiece, a cottage estate'. With less than 20 houses to an acre, and lots of greenery and shops, the area was of relative low population density. An official Lewisham publication around 1930 considered Downham to be ‘a Garden City’.
hose who were the first to live on the Downham estate late in the 1920s had mostly been relocated from certain less pleasant parts of the inner city like Rotherhithe and East London, and these new homes were of a much higher standard than their previous homes.[4][5]
The arrival of new people in the Downham area led to some unexpected results. In order to show their objection, in 1926 those who lived in Alexandra Crescent (at that time, a private street) in Bromley had appointed Albert Frampton, who had developed Alexander Crescent, to build a dividing wall (the Downham Wall). This was because the wealthier private home owners in Bromley wanted to prevent the working class 'vulgar people' from the Downham estate from accessing the neighbouring middle-class area. They also wanted to prevent them from using this as an access route into the town centre of Bromley. He made a formal application to Bromley Council on 16 February 1926 to build the dividing wall. The application was due to strong demands by those who lived his estate. The council refused to take a decision on the application, but the brick wall was built nonetheless. It was across Valeswood Road at its junction with Alexandra Crescent and was known as a ‘class wall’. It was seven feet high and was fortified at the top with broken pieces of glass.
That pre-war class wall was a stark reminder of the great increase in gated communities, barrier-walls and the use of private security by wealthier people in various parts of the growing metropolis.
Meanwhile, life carried on progressing in Downham as the first Shopping Week took place in June 1929, and both the Downham Tavern and Splendid Super Cinema opened in 1930
