The Seven Green Men of Nicosia (Cyprus)
A film purely for reference purposes showing the Seven Green Men on the Church of St Nicholas in Nicosia, Cyprus, the so-called Seven Green Men of Nicosia.
The core of this medieval church was built in the twelfth century, on the site of an earlier Christian basilica, but the gothic sculptural facade (never completed), in which the seven Green Men are set, was added in the thirteenth century.
Although called St Nicholas, this is a misunderstanding based on a visiting nineteenth-century German archaeologist misreading the sculpture on the facade. He thought one of the figures looked like St Nicholas and so the church must have been dedicated to the saint. Most historians now accept that the church was in fact St Mary's, and was never dedicated to St Nicholas, although some believe it might have been the original St Sophia Cathedral. A later St Sophia gothic cathedral (much larger) sits next to it. That said the Turkish authorities in this part of Nicosia still label the church wrongly as St Nicholas. It is also known as The Bedesten as when the muslims took over Cyprus in 1571 they turned the church into a market or bedesten.
Also contrary to popular and tour guide belief the church was never a Latin (Roman Catholic) church, despite its gothic appearance. Even during French and Venetian rule in the Middle Ages it was always a Greek Orthodox church. Cyprus is almost unique in having a number of Orthodox Christian church buildings built in the gothic style (such as parts of St Lazarus in Larnaca and St George of the Greeks in Famagusta.

CYPRUS: Agios Neophytos Monastery [HD]
Agios Neophytos Monastery lies 10 km outside Paphos, near Tala village. Agios (means Saint) Neophytos was the founder of the monastery in 1159. He lived there (from 1170) and died in 1219 at the age of 85. He is considered to be one of the most significant figures of the Church of Cyprus.
Inside the Engleistra (place of seclusion near the monastery) Saint Neophytos led a hermit’s life until 1170. The Engleistra was initially a natural cave on the eastern side of a hill’s slope, and was carved into a place of seclusion by St. Neophytos. It consisted of two areas. One area was a small chapel dedicated to Timios Stavros ( Holy Cross) and the other was the Saint’s cell, in which he also carved his tomb.
A famous painter, Theodoros Apsevdis, undertook to paint the frescoes in the Engleistra. You can also can see Byzantine icons of exceptional artistic quality in the main church of the monastery. Or in the museum of the monastery, which has exhibits from both the ancient period and Byzantine period.
The main church of the monastery was built around 200 years after the death of St. Neophytos and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Famagusta Church, Cyprus
Visualisation of Sinan Pasha Mosque (the Church of Saints Peter and Paul) in Famagusta, North Cyprus. The building, originally constructed in 1360, was undergoing renovation and the survey was to assist in the restoration.
Using state-of-the-art laser scanning technology to collect the raw three dimensional data in a point cloud format, we produced a full 3D surface model which was then photographically draped. For further information on Plowman Craven, visit plowmancraven.co.uk

Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (Saint Nicholas's Cathedral), Famagusta, Northern Cyprus
The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque originally known as Saint Nicholas's Cathedral and later as the Saint Sophia Mosque of Magusa, is the largest medieval building in Famagusta Built between 1300 and 1400, it was consecrated as a Catholic cathedral in 1328. The cathedral was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman Empire captured Famagusta in 1571 and it remains a mosque to this day. The building is built in Rayonnant Gothic style, quite rare outside France, though mediated through buildings in the Rhineland. The historic tie between France and Cyprus is evidenced by its parallels to French archetypes such as Reims Cathedral. Indeed, so strong is the resemblance, that the building has been dubbed The Reims of Cyprus; it was built with three doors, twin towers over the aisles and a flat roof, typical of Crusader architecture. The upper parts of the cathedral's two towers suffered from earthquakes, were badly damaged during the Ottoman bombardments of 1571, and were never repaired. With the Venetians defeated and Famagusta fallen by August 1571, Cyprus fell under Ottoman control and the cathedral was converted into a mosque, renamed the St.Sophia Mosque of Magusa.
