Olinda (Brazil) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Olinda in Brazil.
Olinda is one of the most well preserved colonial towns in Brazil. It was once the capital of the federal state of Pernambuco on the Atlantic coast and in 1982 was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The first Portuguese immigrants were excited about its wonderful location when they landed here in 1535. They were followed by priests and monks who built churches and monasteries within the palm groves on the hills. Most of the town’s important buildings date back to that time when the town prospered due to the cultivation of sugar cane. Religion in the town began to blossom, a fact indicated by the remarkable Benedictine monastery, the Mosteiro De Sáo Bento, Olinda is a fine example of colonial splendour and sacred art. A unique masterpiece of Brazilian Late Baroque!

In addition to a stone washbasin and various oil paintings, the life-size Crucified Christ stands in the choir, with his back to the main chapel, because of the slaves who could not enter the church.

Gregorian Chants in Sao Paulo Monastery (Sao Bento)
Mass celebrated on October 14, 2012. I was supposed to record the mass and the chantings but the security didn't allow me. It's a pitty because the song is very spiritual, deep and unique. It worth a visit: Mass with Gregory Chants takes place on Sundays at 10:00 am. There is a bakery and souvenir store at the church where you can buy fresh bread, jam and other groceries

Olinda - Convento de São Francisco / Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Neves
Convento de São Francisco / Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Neves
Localização: Rua de São Francisco, 280 – Carmo
Fone: (81) 3429.0517

Masses: Tuesday at 7pm, Saturday at 5pm, and Sunday at 8am.
The Primitive Convent was built in 1585, with the project of Francisco dos Santos, being the first Franciscan establishment in Brazil. It is formed by a group that includes the Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves, the Chapel of São Roque (the oldest Chapel of the Third Order Secular in the country), the Chapel of Santana, covered with tiles and the cloister (with 16 panels of Portuguese tiles depicting the life and death of Francis of Assisi) and the sacristy.
In these ensembles, the rich work of carving in wood of the ceiling, with coffins containing paintings of the XVIII century, draws attention. Its convent main chapel is part of the first primitive church, designed before the fire caused by the Dutch in 1631. Currently, the church features architectonic elements rarely used in the region, such as galilee and arcade, originating in the churches of three naves.
It completes the architectural complex, in front of the convent, a great cruise worked on stones removed from the reefs. Finally, a corridor lined with profane panels (with scenes from the daily routine of the court) leads the sacristy, tiled, with worked jacaranda furniture and mosaic lining of sacred paintings. In 1831, the first public library of Pernambuco was installed.
