Easter 2019 in Russia. Russian and other Christian Churches in Vladivostok
Hello again, friends! In this video, we will tell you about Easter in Russia and show you Russian & other Churches in Vladivostok.
There are about 40 Russian Orthodox chapels in Vladivostok. Nowadays the biggest one is:
• Russian Orthodox Church Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God at Pokrovsky Park.
Another one is
• CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
• ST. PAUL'S LUTHERAN CHURCH
April 28, 2019, is Orthodox Easter Day in Russia, a holiday so important people celebrated it even during the atheist
Soviet era. To this day Russians observe many Easter traditions, just the way their ancestors did. Although there are no Easter bunnies or chocolate eggs, celebrations involve unique and beautiful customs—here are some of them.
Easter in Russia is called Paskha (Пасха). The name presumably derives from the Jewish holiday of Pesach, which was dedicated to the release of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Another origin theory says it comes from the Greek phrase “I suffer”. In accordance with Christian tradition, the word signifies transitioning with Christ from death to eternity and from earth to heaven.
It’s a shifting holiday
Russian Easter shifts from year to year because it falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon. Paskha is usually celebrated later than Catholic Easter, because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the old Julian calendar, unlike the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, which have been using the Gregorian calendar since the 16th century.
People fast before Easter
Paskha is preceded by 40 days of Great Lent, the most important event in the Orthodox church year. Those who observe it are not supposed to eat meat, dairy and, on some days, even vegetable oils. On the last Friday before Easter (Good Friday), no food or drink should be consumed until the evening.
Easter requires preparation
Russians are supposed to do all their pre-Easter chores during the last week before the holiday, also known as the Holy Week. Houses should be thoroughly cleaned before “Clean Thursday”, which is when Russians dye and decorate eggs.
On Saturdays, everyone cooks traditional Easter food and those who fast are not allowed to taste it while cooking. It is also common to bless the food at church during the night service.
Easter customs
In Russia, the Easter church service starts on Saturday evening and lasts until dawn. This is usually an impressive ceremony with candle lights and liturgical chants attended even by those who don’t attend mass frequently. At midnight, the bells are rung to announce the resurrection of Christ; the priest says “Christ is risen!” and parishioners are supposed to respond with “He is truly risen!”
Traditional food is still popular
On Easter morning most families in Russia, no matter how religious they are, will probably enjoy a traditional breakfast of eggs, kulich (кулич)—a special kind of yeast bread, and paskha—a pyramid-shaped cake made of cottage cheese and raisins. Even though food stores offer ready-made kulichi and paskhas, many people prefer to make them using family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.
There’s a special greeting
Russians rarely stay at home on Easter; this holiday is all about family gatherings and festive dinners. So throughout the day people exchange Easter eggs, kiss each other on the cheek three times, and often say “Christ is risen!” to each other, responding with “He is truly risen!”
Easter lasts 40 days
The first week after Easter is considered holy, during this period church services are held with their holy doors open—symbolizing Christ opening the kingdom of heaven to all people. In fact, the 40-day period between Easter and Ascension Day is referred to as paschal (пасчал).

The Russian Cathedral of Nice is reborn.
The Russian Cathedral of Saint Nicolas has rediscovered the lustre of its creation from 1912. It is the most visited place of the French Riviera with more than 250,000 visitors per year. The cathedral was built on the spot where the eldest son of Tsar Alexandre II died. Attached to the Patriarchate of Constantinople until 2011, it officially became the property of the Russian Federation on April 10, 2013, after a long legal battle confirmed three times it was the property of the Russian Federation. In the period in between, the Moscow Patriarchate was in charge of the administrative and cultural duties of the building and had received the keys on December 15th, 2011.
The state of the interior and exterior of the building required urgent and important renovations: the Russian federation decided to finance and manage the large scale renovations over two long years of work between the end of 2013 and spring 2016 for a total cost of almost 14 million euros. More than 100 people worked on the repairs and the result is simply stunning. The Russian community now shares the feeling of a rediscovered space, deified by a perfectly controlled light that seems to come down from heaven. The eyes wander over the forgotten frescoes now meticulously revived all over the walls and its majestic ceilings that highlight the bright sweetness of the iconostasis with its beautiful icons. To celebrate this renewal and fund the operation of the building, the association of the Friends of the Russian Cathedral of Nice (the ACRN) organized a big charity event on Ascension Day in the Julian calendar.More than three hundred people have contributed financially to the organization of the gala dinner held in the Royal salon of the legendary Negresco hotel in Nice.

Vladimir Putin has been ruling Russia since 1999. In that time he has shaped the country into an authoritarian and militaristic society. The Soviet Union dissolved into 15 new countries, including the new Russian Federation. In Putin’s eyes, Russia had just lost 2 million square miles of territory. But Putin’s regime has also developed and fostered the most effect cyber hacker army in the world and he’s used it to wreak havoc in the West. But the election of Donald Trump brings new hope for the Putin vision. Trump’s rhetoric has been notably soft on Russia. He could lift sanctions and weaken NATO, potentially freeing up space for Putin’s Russia to become a dominant power once again.

Russia: Church of the Intercession on the Nerl
The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin on the Nerl River is an Orthodox church and a symbol of medieval Russia.
The church is situated at the confluence of Nerl and Klyazma Rivers in Bogolyubovo, Suzdalsky District, Vladimir Oblast, 13 km north-east of the ancient capital of Vladimir.
The church was commissioned by Andrei Bogolyubsky.According to some sources, it was built to commemorate Andrei's victory over the Bulgars and his son Izyaslav, who was slain in the battle. The exact construction date of the church is unknown.
The monument is built in white stone, and has one dome and four columns in the interior. Its proportions are elongated on purpose to make its outline seem more slender, although this architectural solution made its interior too dark for holding divine services.
For centuries, the memorial church greeted everyone approaching the palace at Bogolyubovo. In spring, the area would be flooded, and the church appeared as if floating on water. The church itself has not been touched by later generations; only the dome's shape has been slightly changed, and porch-galleries were added in the 12th-century, rebuilt in 18th-century and then demolished. The walls are still covered with 12th-century stonecarvings.
In 1992, the church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the site White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal.

A glimpse of Ascension Cathedral(Zenkov Cathedral) in Almaty
Wednesday(4/9/2019) Ascension Cathedral(Zenkov Cathedral) in Almaty :- Ascension Cathedral also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Panfilov Park in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Completed in 1907, this cathedral isunique as it is made out of wood but without nails. Its height is 56 meters tall, and is claimed to be the second tallest wooden building in the world and definitely the only wooden church in the World. The cathedral survived the 1911 earthquake with minimal damage, even though it was built without any nails, which some bishops attributed to divine intervention, although some credit might also be given to the advanced anti-earthquake techniques invented or employed by the architect, Andrei Pavlovich Zenkov. I was lucky to get a glimpse of the rituals of the Russian Orthodox church as the priest was conducting a early morning mass.Very few parishioner's inside the cathedral and once the mass was over tourists entered this beautiful architectural marvel of a religious faith. :- Seafarer/Blogger/Traveller Rudolph.A.Furtado.
