Church services have taken place across Russia to mark Orthodox Christmas.
More than 6,000 people gathered to see Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia lead the service at Christ the Savior Cathedral in the Russian capital.
The liturgy was attended by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and his wife. Medvedev and Patriarch Kirill exchanged holiday greetings at the altar.

يحتفل المسيحيون الأرثوذكس الروس ليلة الاحد 6 يناير/كانون الثاني بعيد ميلاد السيد المسيح عليه السلام. وقد توجه أكثر من مليون من سكان العاصمة موسكو إلى الكنائس لأداء صلاة العيد.
وترأس كيريل بطريرك موسكو وسائر روسيا القداس الرئيسي الذي قد بدأ بكنيسة المسيح المخلص بالعاصمة الروسية موسكو، حيث أدى الصلاة هناك نحو 5 آلاف من المؤمنين الروس. كما قامت الصلوات بجميع الكنائس الارثوذكسية في كافة انحاء روسيا.

Orthodox Christian worshippers in parts of Europe plunged into icy waters on Thursday in ceremonies commemorating the baptism of Jesus.
Christians worldwide celebrate the feast of Epiphany as Jesus' revelation to the world as the son of God.
While Western Christians mark it as the day the biblical Magi (or Three Kings) are said to have arrived to view the baby Jesus, Orthodox Christians commemorate Jesus' baptism in the River Jordan.
Dozens of Russians took part in the Epiphany celebrations in Moscow, plunging into tubs of icy water in temperatures of minus eight degrees Celsius (17 degrees Fahrenheit).
Moscow's mayor Sergey Sobyanin set up the water tubs in an area close to the Kremlin, where paramedics were on standby.
In Ukraine's capital, Kiev, men and women ran into the Dnipro River, where a hole had been cut into the thick ice in the shape of a cross.
Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych joined worshippers at an outdoor ceremony at the city's cathedral.
In Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, worshippers raced into the River Danube to retrieve a wooden cross, in a traditional Epiphany ritual.
Not all Orthodox Christian churches celebrate Epiphany on the same day.

Here I present a look at the history of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Built as a result of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow, the Cathedral was a thanksgiving for Russia & the victorious Russian Army. Construction lasted for 40 years & resulted in the largest Orthodox Cathedral in the World. Following the Russian Revolution, Stalin had the Catherdral blown up to make way for the Palace of Soviets, a skyscraper to Socialism & the memory of Lenin. Only the foundations were built by the time Hitler invaded Russia in 1941. Work ceased & following victory in 1945, the foundations were turned into an open-air pool. I actually swam there in 1966...... In 1994, the pool was closed and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour rose again. This time taking a mere fraction of the time to build. This is the story........

Description: In the central part of the icon is the blossoming cross with the crucified Christ. Above the top cross-beam are eight angels holding the instruments of the Passion of Christ. On either side of the cross are the sun, the moon and four flowing winds pictured as human faces. The clouds separate the cross from Mountainous Jerusalem, with the Lord Sabaoth and the Holy Spirit portrayed as a pigeon. From the top edge of the cross descends a head with a key opening the doors. On either side are two cartouches with verses. In the right bottom corner is the yawn of hell with Satan chained to the bottom part of the cross. In the upper part is the vengeful hand beating the Death portrayed as a skeleton sitting astride a horse. Symmetrically to those compositions, to the left of the cross is the scene of the resurrection of the dead and a temple symbolizing the Christian Church. Between the temple pillars stand Evengelists Luke, Mark, Matthew and John, above them is a hand holding a crown over the church.

Jordanian Orthodox mark the baptism of Christ
(2 Feb 2018) Jordanian Orthodox worshippers in Jordan held their annual pilgrimage to the River Jordan on Friday, where Christians believe Jesus was baptised.
About two-thousand Christian pilgrims marched to the Church of St. John the Baptist on the river's east bank, led by Bishop Banathiktos, the head of the Orthodox churches in Jordan.
UNESCO has designated the area on the river - known as Al-Maghtas, or baptism in Arabic - as a World Heritage site.

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, commonly referred to as the Feast of Christ the King or Christ the King Sunday, is a relatively recent addition to the Western liturgical calendar, having been instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI for the Roman Catholic Church. In 1970 its Roman Catholic observance was moved to the final Sunday of Ordinary Time. Therefore, the earliest date on which it can occur is 20 November and the latest is 26 November. The Anglican, Lutheran, and many other Protestantchurches also celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, which is contained in the Revised Common Lectionary. Traditional Catholicsobserve it on its original date, the last Sunday of October. It is also observed on the same computed date as the final Sunday of the ecclesiastical year, the Sunday before the First Sunday of Advent, by Western rite parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.[1] In 2018, the feast day is celebrated on 25 November.[2]

The Russian Alexander Nevsky Church is one of the well known shrines within the Russian Orthodox complex of the city of Jerusalem, and it is popular for housing the remains of the 4th century Holy Sepulchre Church.
The name of the church was given by the Russian prince named Alexander Yaroulavitz who expelled Swedish and German invaders from Russia back in 1242 at the Battle of the Ice. The name Nevsky was derived from a river called Narva where the Swedish army was defeated.
Now let's enter the church. As we get further inside the church we can see to the right, an arch from a pagan temple built in the time of Emperor Hadrian who demolished Jerusalem. This arch is the remainder of a large Arch, one out of 4 that were built here in Jerusalem by the Roman Emperor Adrianos. Another famous arch of these 4 arches is the one at Ecce Homo at the beginning of the Via Dolorosa.
Now let's have a look at one of the most important discoveries of the excavations that took place in this church. Over there are the remains of massive walls from the time of King Herods, and an opening between them. Since we are not far from Calvary there is no doubt that this place was the Threshold of Judgment Gate which was the edge of the city walls in the time of Christ. To the left you can see a hole made in the wall for the stakes of the gate's doors -- this hole is called the Eye of Needle.
In front of us is a Crucifix fixed on a large stone from Calvary and below, enclosed by a wooden frame and covered with Glass, is a stone of an ancient road on which Jesus had walked as he exited the city walls to his crucifixion at Calvary. According to that, this should be the place of station number 7 of the Via Dolorosa where Jesus falls for the second time as he stumbled on the city wall thresholds.
Here on the wall next to this threshold we can see planks with names of people that have donated for the excavation in this place.
Now let's see one of the highlights of this church which is not yet open to the public, but you have the privilege to see it. Over there behind the excavation cover, there is a column which was part of the main entrance to the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre that was built by Constantine in 330 AD. The column is quite unique since it is made of black stone which is not available in the vicinity of Jerusalem; hence the stone was brought here from a distance to mark an important place. In Roman time, the main entrance to the basilica was part of the Roman Cardo -- the main road built by the Romans that crossed old Jerusalem. Today we can see remains of these columns, like the one at station number 7 of the via dolorosa, and others at the excavation site of the Cardo in the Jewish quarter -- you should notice that all the these columns are made of white stone.
Now let's get back to the center of the church. The Picture on this wall depicts Jesus walking with his cross as he exits the city walls - which was right here -- on the way to Golgotha.
From here we should enter the church that was built at the other side of this site. At the center of this Russian church there is a stone altar which was built over another stone altar that was found here, and was probably part of a chapel in the Constantinian Basilica in which several holy places were united under one roof.
Here is a tomb representing the holy sepulcher of Jesus, as is found in many Russian churches around the world.
High up along the walls of the church there are paintings of Christian saints, and below them, pictures of Jesus during his last day before his crucifixion. Here is Jesus during the Agony in Gethsemane and his arrest, Jesus along the Via Dolorosa, Jesus' body being prepared for burial, the angle tells Maria that the tomb is empty and here Jesus after his resurrection.
On the lower parts of the walls, we can see icons of Mary and her son, a picture of Jesus and a picture of Veronica with the image of Jesus on her Veil.

Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, has blessed newly sworn-in President Vladimir Putin in the 15th-century Annunciation Cathedral.
The Patriarch performed a prayer service at the cathedral, considered the jewel of Russian architecture. One of the greatest medieval churches in the Russian capital, it once served as a private church of the Muscovite monarchs.
After the prayer, the patriarch addressed the head of state on behalf of all clergy and believers, saying that all of these people supported Putin because they see him as “a leader who, apart from successfully managing the country, is also a person devoted to his motherland.”

2. At the time of the Roman Empire, Great Britain would have been known as Britannia rather than England. The name England was first used during the Middle Ages, referring to the tribe of Germanic Angles that settled the island after the fall of the Roman Empire.
