Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Nerja Church of El Salvador
El Salvador Church was finished in 1697 during the ministry of Alonso de Molina Duran as parish priest. In 1776, following the purchase of three adjacent houses, the church was enlarged according to master builder, Juan Lechuga's plans.
Nerja Church of El Salvador is constructed as a three naved cross, the central area covered with wooden framework formed of paired braces, the sides featuring vaulted edges at the ends with half barrel vaults, with windows in the remainder.
The exterior features a four sided bell tower built in 1724, although later reformed. The interior is notable for the Granadine frescoes (end of C. XVIII) decorating the Evangeline nave, and the contemporary mural of the annunciation, executed by the Axarquian painter Francisco Hernandez. As you leave the Church of El Salvador, head straight on and then turn to the right and you will find yourself at the Balcon de Europa.

The fiesta of Virgen del Carmen in Nerja, Costa del Sol in Spain.
Nerja is located on the eastern side of the Costa del Sol just 50 kilometers from Malaga. The once sleepy fishing village, now has a population of around 20,000.
Nerja is a thriving holiday destination boasting 16 kilometers of sandy beaches with clear waters, and tourist attractions such as the famous Nerja caves and the Balcon de Europa. Fortunately Nerja has managed to avoid the over build of high-rise apartment blocks and retains its charm and character as a true Spanish beach and town destination.
One of the many fiesta/holy days celebrated here in Nerja, on July 16th there is a procession from the San Salvador church on the Balcon de Europa up Calle Pintada through the town and then down Castilla Perez to the Torrecilla beach where the image of The Virgen del Carmen is loaded on to a fishing boat at dusk. Many hundreds of people follow the procession and a brass band leads the procession through the town and to the beach. This is the only procession where the people carrying the trono are barefoot
The boat then proceeds along towards El Playazo beach, then to Burriana beach.
The boats finally comes back to shore on Calahonda beach and there is a big fireworks display and usually live music and dancing on the Balcon.
The celebrations actually start two nights before on the 14th with flowers being offered to the statue of the Virgin in San Salvador church on the Balcon de Europa accompanied by a choir and the Brotherhood of Virgen del Carmen. The following evening on the 15th from 10pm there is a “moraga” (a bit of a party with sardines cooked the traditional way) in the Plaza Fabrica del Cangrejos at the bottom of Castilla Perez with a huge barbecue and bar and free sardines and drinks are served. On the 16th the procession leaves the church around 7ish after some music and dancing

Nerja is a resort town along southern Spain's Costa del Sol. Its seafront promenade, Balcón de Europa, tops a promontory with views of the Mediterranean and surrounding mountains. Below it lie sandy beaches and cliffside coves. Cueva de Nerja, a nearby cavern with unusual stalactites and stalagmites, hosts popular summertime concerts. It's also known for its paleolithic paintings, viewable by guided tour.
Nerja is a municipality on the Costa del Sol in the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of La Axarquía. Nerja is on the country's southern Mediterranean coast, about 50 km east of Málaga. Under Muslim rule, Nerja name was Narixa, which means abundant source and is the origin of the current name.
Nerja has a long history, evidenced by the primitive paintings found in its famous Nerja caves, discovered in 1959. These caves are now believed to be just one entrance to a linked series of potholes stretching many miles into the mountains between Nerja and Granada, and which may yet prove to be one of the most extensive unexplored systems in Europe. Visitors to the caves will be able to view the remains of one of the ancient inhabitants of Nerja. The Romans built here three settlements, including Detunda, of which now large remains can be seen. The area was later taken over by the Arabs in the early 8th century. Under the Moors, the town was known as Narixa, which means abundant spring, from which the present name derives.

Nerja is not integrated in the Málaga Metropolitan Transport Consortium. As well as two local bus routes, around town (from the Riú Mónica Hotel), there are buses from the top of the High Street by the Alsa ticket office to Málaga, Caves of Nerja, Frigiliana, Maro, Almuñécar, Vélez-Málaga, Torre del Mar, Granada, Córdoba, Seville, Almería and Motril.

Nerja, Spain
In early October there is a festival in Nerja which lasts for one week, and the locals use this as an excuse to spend 7 days dancing, singing making merry!
The Feria consists of a large fairground surrounded by casitas (marquees) where live perfomances of music and dancing take place. There are many stalls selling food and drinks and each night the party and the noise goes on until the small hours.
The Feria is officially in honour of the patron saint of the town the Virgen de las Angustias and San Miguel Arcángel. At the end of September the patron saint is carried in a procession from the sanctuary of their chapel to El Salvador church on the Balcon de Europa. On the main day of the Feria the statue is carried back to the church accompanied by San Miguel Arcángel.
As part of the feria events, the Kings and Queens of the feria are elected along with Mister and Miss Nerja who then parade around town on a series of feria floats.
