The Pearl Of Belarus. Gervyaty. Жемчужина Беларуси. Гервяты.
Church of the Holy Trinity is beautiful, is a Church of extraordinary beauty. When you look at a Gothic Cathedral, admire its architectural forms and marvel at the painstaking work of generations of builders. It felt some kind of detachment going up to the lines of ordinary human life. Probably so intended. Earthly life is fleeting and sad, and impending heavenly – beautiful and timeless.
All who visit Gervyaty, very surprised that in a very small village with the ordinary wooden houses, stands a huge building with a height of 61 meters, which is considered one of the highest churches in Belarus. The Church is called Belarusian miracle, it appears on the horizon, as beautiful and fairytale castle.

RUSSIA: ORTHODOX PILGRIMS TOUCH RELICS
Russian/Nat
XFA
Thousands of Muscovites have been filling the churches of the Russian capital all this week in a bid to touch ancient relics of an Orthodox Christian Saint believed to have healing qualities.
The relics of St Panteleimon are being displayed at various monasteries around Moscow.
Usually they're kept in Greece.
Already nearly 10-thousand Russians have seen the relics of St Panteleimon.
On Saturday the casket was moved to another church in central Moscow.
Hundreds of Russian Orthodox believers waited outside the Rozhdespvennski Monastery for their turn to be allowed inside to see the relics.
For Russians, the arrival of the relics of St Panteleimon is a major event, as normally they are kept in the inaccessible Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos, in Greece.
The casket containing the relics arrived on July the 13th and has been on display in various monasteries throughout Moscow.
The relics were moved to the Rozhdespvennski Monastery on Saturday.
Last week they were at the Novodevichy Monastery.
The Moscow media reported crowds of up to 10-thousand (10,000) people massing at the Novodevichy Monastery to catch a glimpse of the relics.
Security was tight around the church with police checking all worshippers with metal detectors.
At some points in the past week the crowds have been so large that medical services had to deal with several cases of pilgrims fainting before they even entered the church.
It is unclear what the relics actually are, but for the thousands of Muscovites knowing that it is a memorial to the saint is enough.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
I'm ill and I live alone. There's nobody to help me to get to church. I cried and begged that I could come and touch the icon of St Panteleimon. I asked so much. And look -- God sent a woman to help me.

Many of the pilgrims who have come to visit the relics are disabled and ill people, who believe the relics of St Panteleimon will help cure their ailments.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
Illnesses come from our sins. People come and repent and touch the relics of the saint and are healed. Each person hopes for something pure and holy. Therefore the people come here and hope to be healed.

Since the end of Soviet rule, when religious worship was officially illegal under the communist regime, there's been a modest revival of the Russian Orthodox Church.
With many Russians forced to live in near poverty, the chance to go to church again has brought comfort to many people.
The relics of St. Panteleimon were brought to Russia four years ago, sparking similar scenes of mass pilgrimage.
The relics will remain in Moscow until the next week.

Belarus: Step by Step
Communists thought that religion was a prescientific superstition that had no function once the communist society was fully established. Years of communist terror and relentless attacks on the Church led atheism to penetrate deeply in Belorussian society with the consequent disappearance of religious life. Churches were closed or converted into culture houses or pubs. The smallest act of faith was suppressed, and met with on-going acts of repression and retribution. For decades, despite their great desire, Belorussian Catholics were not allowed to pilgrimage to the national shrine of Our Lady of Budslav – famous for its miracles and the patron of Belarus. The pilgrimage movement in Belarus started only again with the fall of the Iron Curtain in the 1990's. At that time, only 30 to 40 people participated in the pilgrimage. Today Budslav is experiencing a revival with thousands visiting the shrine reflecting the larger return to faith in Belorussia.
