Mount of Beatitudes, Sermon on the Mount, Sea of Galilee, Bible Teaching, Christ's Longest Sermon
See the famous location of the Mount of Beatitudes where Christ preached the Sermon on the Mount. Learn about the heart of what Christ was telling us and how it applies to us today.
Location
1. The Sea of Galilee is located in the northern part of Israel known as the Galilee region. Therefore, it’s called the Sea of Galilee.
2. It is also referred to in Scripture by other names like Ginnosar, Lake of Gennesar, Gennesaret, Sea of Chinneroth, Kinneret, and Sea of Tiberias.
3. It’s about 70 miles (115 Km.) north of Jerusalem and about 27 miles (45 Km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
4. It is a freshwater lake about 8 miles (13 km.) wide by about 12 miles (19 km.) long, and 150 ft. (46 m.) deep.
5. It is located about 700 ft. (213 m.) below sea level.
6. It is the main freshwater source for much of Israel.
7. Because of its location, storms can arise quickly and drop down onto its surface without much warning.
8. The Sea of Galilee was located on a main crossroad of the known world during Christ ministry on earth. This international highway was called the “Via Maris” (Way of the Sea), and linked travel between the three continents of, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
9. Travelers from these 3 continents were forced to use this route as there were few other options for traveling to and from each continent. This was so because there was a desert to the east that was impassible due to lack of water, and the Mediterranean Sea was located to the west which was not a realistic option for travel as it was expensive, and ships were scarce.
10. The Via Maris passed right along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and there are old ruins and markers showing its existence.
11. The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem.
12. Oftentimes, we might think Christ was hiding out somewhere in a remote location. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along this route) as a center stage so His message would reach as many people as possible in the world.
13. By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles would travel by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the Gospel to the rest of the known world so that the evangelization work done later by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable to those who heard the message about Christ.
Historical Background

Entry from: Capernaum, Israel
Entry Title: Tabgha, Bethsaida, Mt. Beatitudes, Capernaum,
Entry:
When asked what my favorites of the trip were, I always say the Seas because so many of the things we saw were supposedly the place or believed to be the place, but it's hard to deny the authenticity of an actual body of water as great as the Meditarranean, the Dead Sea, or the Sea of Galilee. We had arrived late Wednesday evening to the Kibbutz in Ma'agan, went straight to our units, unpacked and cleaned up for dinner. Later that evening before turning in for the night, a few of us walked down to the Sea of Galilee to wade in the water and have a brief and informal devotional. The following morning on my way from my unit to the dining hall, I noticed a beautiful panoramic of the Sea. After breakfast Bambi and Yuval took us on our 3rd day of touring the Holy Land. Our first stop would be Tabgha, where 5000 were fed by Jesus who performed the miracle of the Multiplication of the Fish and Loaves. On our way to Tabgha from Ma'agan I caught a glimpse of Tiberias, where we would spend some time that evening in the markets, shopping and observing locals dancing to bohemian music on top of a bus that was driving through the city center. Our second stop, after Tabgha, was the city of Bethsaida which was discovered in 1987, by Israeli archaeologist Dr. Rami Arav. In 1990, Dr. Arav and several colleagues from around the world joined together to form the Consortium of the Bethsaida Excavations Project to uncover the ancient layers of this 21 acre site. Bethsaida means House of the Fisherman and is one of the most frequently mentioned cities in the New Testament. Peter, Andrew, and Phillip, three of the 12 Apostles, were from Bethsaida. It is also believed to be a place where Jesus performed several miracles. Korazim was the 2nd archaelogical site we visited. The town's ruins are spread over an area of 25 acres, subdivided into five separate quarters, with a synagogue in the center. The ruins at the site include a large, impressive synagogue which was built with black basalt stones where Yuval sat in what is believed to be Moses' Chair. Our next stop, Mount Beatitudes: The Church of the Beatitudes, an octagonal shaped chapel situated atop the Mount of Beatitudes, marks the spot where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount. It was built after remains of a small Byzantine church were discovered here in 1935. The modern church was built on a hilltop, not over the ancient church. Our group gathered in a shaded area on a hill overlooking the Church of the Beatitudes to listen to Robert read the 8 Beatitudes from Matthew 5:3-10 in English. Yuval then read them to us in Hebrew. After leaving the Mount of Beatitudes we went to another location to view a fisherman's boat believed to be from Jesus time. Then we boarded an Egyptian style boat to enjoy a ride on the Sea of Galilee. A St. Peter's Fish lunch was prepared for us upon our return to shore. YUM! On our way back to the Kibbutz in Ma'agan that evening, Bambi stopped in Yardenit, the Baptismal site on the Jordan River, where 2 ladies in our group were baptized.

Mount of Beatitudes - Israel Tour
Mount of Beatitudes... Traveling Thru The Bible Show takes us on a journey to Israel and stop at the heart of Jesus' Ministry. The traditional location for the Mount of Beatitudes is on the north western shore of the Sea of Galilee, between Capernaum and Gennesaret (Ginosar). maranathatours.com This video is about Mount of Beatitudes - Touring Israel
The Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake (Matt 5:3-11 KJV).
Capernaum, the town of Jesus
Kefar Nahum is the town which was the center of Jesus’ ministry in northern Galilee and the town of where Peter’s mother-in-law lived.
Located on the north-west side of the lake of Galilee, the ruins of Capernaum are divided into two sites: the Franciscan and the Greek Orthodox.
Unlike Jerusalem and other touristy ancient places in Israel, Capernaum seems to be untouched, still in its raw form. Just by walking here, and looking at the lake, the hills, the mountains, we felt connected to its history. It is as if we could almost see Jesus walking on these shores, looking at the same hills.
And besides the breathtaking nature, Capernaum has fascinating ruins. A 4th-century synagogue built on top of the original one where Jesus taught, a house which is believed to be the house of Simon Peter the apostle, and much more.
Join us in this episode as we explore this fascinating place.
Season 2, Episode 5
* Narration correction: The land was purchased on 1894, not 1908.

Beatitudes - Mount Beatitudes - Galilee - Sea of Galilee
The Beatitudes read on the shores of the Sea of Galilee
Sea of Galilee, Mount of Beatitudes, Israel
The Sea of Galilee, also Kinneret, Lake of Gennesaret, or Lake Tiberias, is a freshwater lake in Israel. It is approximately 53 km (33 mi) in circumference, about 21 km (13 mi) long, and 13 km (8.1 mi) wide. it is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake in the world (after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake).
Much of the ministry of Jesus occurred on the shores of Lake Galilee. The Synoptic gospels of Mark (1:14–20), Matthew (4:18–22), and Luke (5:1–11) describe how Jesus recruited four of his apostles from the shores of Lake Galilee: the fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew and the brothers John and James. One of Jesus' famous teaching episodes, the Sermon on the Mount, is supposed to have been given on a hill overlooking the lake. Many of his miracles are also said to have occurred here including his walking on water, calming the storm, the disciples and the boatload of fish, and his feeding five thousand people (in Tabgha).
The Mount of Beatitudes is a hill where Jesus is believed to have delivered the Sermon on the Mount.
The Mount's highest point is 58 metres (190 ft) below sea level, which is approximately 155 metres (509 ft) above the surface of the lake. The present site (also known as Mount Eremos) has been commemorated for more than 1600 years. A Byzantine church was erected lower down the slope from the current site in the 4th century, and it was used until the 7th century. Remains of a cistern and a monastery are still visible. The current Roman Catholic Franciscan chapel was built in 1937-38 following plans by Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi.
Pope John Paul II celebrated a Mass at this site in March 2000.
Holy Land Tour Day 3 Israel | Travel vlog Beatitudes, Tabgha, Capernaum, Sea of Galilee, Yardenit
Here is the third day of our Holy Land Tour where we visited the mount of Beatitudes, Tabgha, Capernaum the town of Jesus, the Sea of Galilee and Yardenit baptismal site. Listen to our tour guide and you will learn a lot. Thank you Mr Jacob, our old but strong and very informative tour guide.
Mount of Beatitudes (Hebrew: הר האושר, Har HaOsher) is a hill in northern Israel, in the Korazim Plateau. It is where Jesus is believed to have delivered the Sermon on the Mount.
Tabgha (Arabic: الطابغة, al-Tabigha; Hebrew: עין שבע, Ein Sheva which means spring of seven) is an area situated on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. It is traditionally accepted as the place of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes (Mark 6:30-46) and the fourth resurrection appearance of Jesus (John 21:1-24) after his Crucifixion. Between the Late Muslim period and 1948, it was the site of a Palestinian Arab village.
Capernaum (/kəˈpɜːrniəm, -neɪəm/ kə-PUR-nee-əm, -nay-əm; Hebrew: כְּפַר נַחוּם, romanized: Kfar Naḥūm, lit. 'Nahum's village'; Arabic: كفر ناحوم, romanized: Kafr Nāḥūm) was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had a population of about 1,500. Archaeological excavations have revealed two ancient synagogues built one over the other. A house turned into a church by the Byzantines is believed to have been the home of Saint Peter.
The Sea of Galilee (Hebrew: יָם כִּנֶּרֶת, Judeo-Aramaic: יַמּא דטבריא, גִּנֵּיסַר, Arabic: بحيرة طبريا), Lake Tiberias, Kinneret or Kinnereth, is a freshwater lake in Israel. It is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake in the world (after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake), at levels between 215 metres (705 ft) and 209 metres (686 ft) below sea level. It is approximately 53 km (33 mi) in circumference, about 21 km (13 mi) long, and 13 km (8.1 mi) wide. Its area is 166.7 sqkm (64.4 sq mi) at its fullest, and its maximum depth is approximately 43 m (141 feet). The lake is fed partly by underground springs, but its main source is the Jordan River, which flows through it from north to south.
Yardenit (Hebrew: ירדנית), also known as the Yardenit Baptismal Site, is a baptism site located along the Jordan River in the Galilee region of northern Israel, which is frequented by Christian pilgrims. The site is located south of the river's outlet from the Sea of Galilee, near Kibbutz Kvutzat Kinneret, which owns and manages the site.
